I Ride: skinny hot women with bit TT's
CR500 for trails
pros/cons

Also, I need to lower it...any recomended ways of doing this (besides shaving the seat). I need to drop it a few inches.

I'm also only 145lbs and will only be trail and desert riding so dont need to worry about MX riding setup. No jumps (I have my KX for that)

A CR500 is NOT a trail bike.
It is a full on, no Bull Shit Moto-Xer.
Its a race bike, not a play bike.
You need a different bike to trail ride with.

Excellant Dunes bike! There, you got lots of open 'high speed fun'.
Its not much fun as a SM.
They where designed as a point and shoot from corner to corner bike.
I spun the rear wheel alot coming out of corners in the dirt..
Try it on asphalt and slicks?
That bike can spank you HARD. Unless your into that kind of thing!
A 4-stroke is way better for what you want to do. Trails or SM

I Ride: 2004 ZX10R, 2001 GSXR 1000
I've got a buddy down in Vancouver that has been using his CR500 as a trail bike for years and he loves it. He had the engine worked on, heavier flywheel and put in a Recluse clutch, etc, etc. Trials tire on the back, bark busters and everything. It's not a widow maker or an uncontrollable animal by any means. He likes is so much that he is getting the engine put into a CR250F frame right now. Ya see, he figured out that the throttle works both ways, just like on any bike. Shoot me a PM if you want to chat him up. I can get you his email addr or get you in touch with him on another forum. I think he's on Thumpertalk a lot.

He's all about his WR144 nowadays

You can put a lot of work into a MX bike to make it a decent trail bike. But you're better off buying a trail bike for trails.

Yep, I hear that those frame mods on the CR250F ain't cheap to get the CR500 engine in it. I think he's sick in the head these days. He doesn't even want to consider riding a street bike anymore, not even on a track? He's 100% dirt now.

I Ride: 2013 Gasgas 300xc w/lic plate + 1985 RZ350 + 2010 YZ250F +
the absolute best bikes for all around riding are mx. the "trail" versions are boring in comparison and those wide ratio transmissions ruin the snap, then they add flywheel weights.

I've ridden with you. you rip! the main reason people like the trail versions are for the magic button that is nice, but not needed. the only things you would want to make sure of is that you have protaper style bars, bark busters to protect the levers (not so much your hands), and a skid plate, and walla (that's french) you have almost the perfect do-all off road bike. get a couple different sprockets for dunes and woods, now it's perfect.

I used to ride with a couple CR's and KX500's when I had my RM465. We rode trails all the time. Like said, the throttle works both ways.

Those have a throttle????? I thought those were just some crazy looking on/off switch

Is he short? Weigh 145 pounds? There are way better bikes to do the job. Bikes dont reqiure dumping a load of money into, that he will never get back out. ect.ect.ect.

Wait you forgot an 18" rear wheel, woods suspension, headlight, kickstand.

I'm gonna go with Freds view point. If He says you rip its perfect for you!!!
Its gonna be a handful on muddy tight single track but the other 90% of off road it will be outrageously great.
Me, I'd put a flywheel weight on it (helps prevent quick stalls in slow stuff) and gear down for everything but dunes, desert.
That bike ha sso much power it will be hard to tell its got a FW while rippin around but you will really appreciate it rock crawlin, log traverses etc. Very good in the mud. Hate to stall in mud HATE IT!!!

I'll agree with James, that it is best on dunes and not so much for SM due to the sudden powerband with slicks on dirt.

But I will also agree with FFF and others that it can be a good trail bike too, if you are a fast aggressive rider. It will lug the best of any 2 stroke and requires the least maintenance because you so rarely use full throttle. But it will also hurt you in an instant if you miss the brake and grab a handfull of gas instead!?!

I rode a WR500 and IT490 in the woods for many years and they worked fine, but I like to go fast and I weigh 225. I also now ride a CRF450R, which I think is that much better, especially on slick ground. A flywheel weight, lower gearing, or an autoclutch will help, but it may still bite you if you make a tiny mistake.

-You can wheelie in all five gears, at any given moment, and any time you sneeze, shiver, shake, or shit your pants in fear.
-You'll be the envy of all your friends when you hit a table and accidentally do a perfect backflip because you caught the powerband at take off.
-No one will be able to keep up on a gravel road... or down a cliff... or through a tree.

Since most bikes are sprung for ~170lb rider, this is very true for a 145lb rider. But for a 200lb+ rider, if you back off the clickers, stock MX suspension is actually pretty plush.

Yes and no, if you're in the powerband, the power is very strong and abrupt. But if you are below the hit, a 500 2 smoke will lug pretty well and be pretty tractible. You must be very careful when the power hits, though!

This is true, but since the OP mentions owning a KX MXer, I assume he is at least somewhat experienced on dirt, especially with 2 stroke power?
