Hey Sparky,

I was here and off work all week. I did my brakes yesterday on my own. I haven't taken a ride yet to test them. I did it after reading some of the steps online and in my shop manual. I think I did it correctly, but I guess I'll know for sure the first time I try to stop . Sorry I didn't get in touch with you, but I did it in the middle of the day and figured everyone else was working. I did take the bike out just to run into town yesterday, but it was pretty cold. I also went for a run down the backroads to Ron's house a few days ago, but he was getting ready to take his kids to the playground, so he was busy.

I've got one more shift in Eugene, then I'm transferring to Longview, WA. I'll have a lot more time to ride and goof off after that. I'll let you know. It looks like the weather will be pretty crappy for the next several days, so my bike is staying in the nice warm garage waiting for some sunshine. I'm guessing Ron missed this thread, or he would've answered you. I've got your cell number. I'll PM mine to you. Talk to you soon.

Sorry Sparky, I totally missed this thread. I seem to have come down with a stomach bug that;s making it very painful just to sit on the couch. Hopefully I'll be feeling better this next week. I'll be in Portland for training the 22nd through the 27th so I won't be around. The wife has pretty much told me I'm busy all day Saturday, and I work on Sunday and Monday. We'll see what happens.

Ron

Man! Are we a sad group or what? Just three of us talking over here on the coast and can't ever work out a time to ride. Usually when I figure out I've got a couple of hours to spare on a nice day, I just go do it. If I tried to make calls and work out a plan with anyone, I'd probably spend all my spare time planning instead of riding. At least the weather should be getting warmer soon. I'm looking forward to it. And, looking forward to working closer to home too. Hope you're feeling better Ron.

I've got to work over the weekend, so my wife is coming to hang out with me for Valentine's Day and my birthday. At least I get to look forward to having her around while I'm off duty. Should be fun.

Are you local? What town are you in? I see bikes riding up and down 101 between Astoria and Seaside all the time, but only a few of us communicate on the forum. We should try to get all the local north coast guys on this site so we can set up some rides from here.

kinda local , I live in Rainier, Or. about an hour from Astoria but I choose to ride to the coast rather than ride in Portland. No offense to the Portland riders, I just choose to ride the western roads.

He definately has some good stories. And lots of nice bikes sitting in the restaurant. He rides an older BMW I believe an R60. I talked with him a while back about doing bike nights and he loved the idea.

As far as I go, I spent most of the day on the couch unable to get up. Damn flu I guess. Hopefully I'll be feeling better before work in the morning, otherwise tomorrow is going to suck.

Hi All,
I'm new to Astoria (just got here two weeks ago) and my bike arrived safe HOORAY! I'm looking to go for a short, beginner-type ride - though I did just ride my bike from Longview, WA to Astoria. That has been my longest ride so far! (I bought my bike to get around campus back home).
Anyway, if there are any shorter, non-highway rides coming up please let me know. I'll be out of town this weekend, but I'm free during the week.
I look forward to meeting other riders in town!
June

Hi Sparky,
Thanks for the warm welcome!
I got your number, I'll call you tomorrow night to give you mine.
I also found you on FB and added you as my friend there.
This weekend I'm going to Mt Hood with a new friend that invited me, but other than that my schedule is mostly free so I'm ready when you are!
I looking forward to meeting you,
June

Hey June, welcome to the site. What brings you to the Astoria area?

As far as riding, I'm going to be busy all this week, then I'll be in Portland next week for work. After that I usually only work 2 days a week and try to go out for an hour at least a couple times a week.

Ron

Hi Ron,

I just finished grad school and I got a job where I'll be stationed in Astoria working on the fishing boats. So I'll be out for a few days then back for several days. I don't start until March so I'm just settling in for now.

An hour-long ride on a pretty road sounds great. Or a stop at the BBQ place (I haven't been to it yet) or a coffee place, or an ice cream shop or anything else really. Please do keep me in mind for whatever you have planned.

I look forward to it!
June

Sounds like fun. I'm in the Coast Guard and work in the Operations Center at Group Astoria. I get involved with a lot of the fishing boats in the area too...lol

It's a long way away Ron. Rain or shine I'm gonna check out the road conditions. It's just been to long since I've been on two wheels.

I understand. The roads out here aren't too bad right now. It's been pretty slick and frosted over in the mornings, but decent in the afternoons. There's still some gravel in the higher elevations of 26 towards Vernonia, but everything else seems to be good.

where are you going to be staying while your here

there are a lot of options we could do

I just cant commit to any thing be for say 1:00 is that to late ?

Sounds good Sparky, I'll be at my in-laws out in Olney. I was planning on checking out Lewis and Clark and then down to 53 back to the sunset and over to Jewel. Just a scouting ride for me to check on the conditions for the following weekend really.
Bagger? no problem I'm going to try to get my father in law his brother and another one of their buddies will go with. All baggers. 1:00 sounds good to me. How about meeting at Duggers?

Yeah, I have a ton of pics of my bike with the birds, it all depends on who is working in maintenance. Most of the guys even park their cars in there at night. You can see my neighbors M3 in the background.

I've been there to visit Ron. He's never let me put my bike in the hangar, but I used to park in the hangar when I worked for the Bar Pilots. I'll attach a pic or two later with my bike at work.

You guys are making Saturday sound like a lot of fun. I'm bumming that I probably wont make it. You'll have to call or text me during the ride to tell me how it's going so that I can enjoy it live with you. At least I can dream that I'm out riding too.

June, Welcome to the Oregon Coast. You came at the right time of year. The days should be getting longer and the weather should be steadily improving through September. Hopefully we'll get a good group for rides once or twice a month. I'll be at Doogers or the BBQ anytime I'm not working.

See you all later, John

Here are the pics I mentioned above and finally added...

Sorry ya'll can't make the saturday ride due to having my son and the weather looks to be wet. My hayabusa doesn't react well to wet roads. But I will be in for next weekend sat. or sun. If anyone is planning on a ride then, let me know. I might bring some others from the Rainier/longview area to join. I don't know the coastal roads all that well but want to learn the best roads in the area. So let's get together and do this. I can meet @ doogers for a ride on feb 28th or the 1st depending on the weather forecast

I start working my new job in Longview on Saturday. I'm hoping to ride over there to work sometime when the weather permits. I'm hoping someone around there can show me some good places to ride. I'll show you roads on the coast. If you're coming to Astoria, and are riding for fun, don't use highway 30. There are better ways to get here on a bike.

Are you talking the roads near longview? If so I know a few of the best sweepers in the area.

Yes. I'll keep living just south of Warrenton, but I'll be commuting to Longview. I might get some time while I'm there to ride around and see the area. I'd like to know where the good roads are. Are the LEO's there as mean as the one's on the Washington Coast? Those guys are brutal! I've had them mad at me for 3 over the limit.

Between SparkyJames, Ron, and myself, we could show you some great roads along the Oregon Coast. When I come to Longview for work, I'll probably have to use 30 because I'll be in a hurry to get there, but the best bike roads to get from Longview to Clatsop County are south of highway 30. Check out this video filmed between Mist and Clatskanie on highway 47. It's actually closer to you than it is to the coast.

I'll let you know when I'm heading that way on the bike and have some time to explore. Hopefully you'll be around. Let us know on this thread when you're coming to the Oregon Coast. There are some great little roads hidden around here.

no thanks i will ride it ok but no way do i have the balls to take that road that fast.
