| Endorsed Joined: Feb 2009 From: bellingham wa I Ride: the shiny ones | Beware of the construction going on. I was up there two days ago and a solid 150-200 foot patch of road that is now gravel exists on your route, and somewhere along the way home I managed to punch a hole in my needed-changing-anyway pilot power. A decent amount of fresh oily roads as well and 1 lane roads with flaggers and decent wait times. It was a few days back, so perhaps the construction is complete and these are removed.. From the DOT site: "a.m. 8/28 SR 542: Britton to Coal Creek paving Milepost 2.79-19.27 Mark Hammer, Project Engineer, 360-757-5832 We will resurface 17 miles of Mount Baker Highway, from Britton Road to Coal Creek Bridge. We will also resurface a half-mile of SR 9, from SR 542 to Smith Creek Bridge. We use a process known as Hot In-Place asphalt paving that heats, loosens, removes, mixes, lays down and compacts the asphalt in one swoop." Just a heads up, ride safe. |

| Training Wheels Joined: Feb 2009 From: Bellingham, WA I Ride: 2007 CBR1000RR | I rode South Pass and up to Artist Point today, still lots of construction with delays, new pavement going down today with seams, bumps, and lots of gravel and loose blacktop bits on Mt baker highway and even South Pass. The conditions were very different going up versus going down, so please everyone be careful. Hello Winthrop! |

This project will reduce the risk of water and debris overwhelming the current Bruce Creek culvert and improve fish passage at Baptist Camp Creek. * Daytime single-lane closures Aug. 31-Sept. 3: Crews will intermittently close lanes during paving work. Delays are expected. Emergency access will be maintained. 8 a.m. 8/28 SR 542: Warnick bluff stabilization Milepost 31 Chris Damitio, Project Engineer, 360-788-7400 Crews working along the Nooksack River near Glacier will place engineered logs and boulders along the bluff to divert the river away from the bank. The river has been destabilizing the area for several years, threatening to undermine the road. * Drivers will notice trucks and other equipment in the area. Work will take place off the road. 9 a.m. 7/17 SR 542: Nooksack River Bridge repainting Milepost 31 Chris Damitio, Project Engineer, 360-788-7400 Crews will repaint the Warnick-area Nooksack River steel truss bridge to preserve the structure. The entire bridge will be shrink-wrapped so crews can complete work without affecting the river or being affected by the elements. * Three-month single-lane closure: Traffic is reduced to one lane over the bridge through October as crews strip and repaint the steel. Traffic is controlled by a temporary signal. Drivers should expect minor delays. 8 a.m. 8/28 SR 542: Britton to Coal Creek paving Milepost 2.79-19.27 Mark Hammer, Project Engineer, 360-757-5832 We will resurface 17 miles of Mount Baker Highway, from Britton Road to Coal Creek Bridge. | Training Wheels Joined: Feb 2009 From: Bellingham, WA I Ride: 2007 CBR1000RR | I believe everything was clear after the one lane bridge with the temporary stoplights. That bridge looks like some sort of asbestos-cleanup site. Before that there was one section of pavement that was gone that left a hole so deep that I almost got off the bike and pushed it to minimize the impact with the sharp edges of the pavement, pretty much was like going off a curb into the gravel and then back up the other side. I think they were going to start filling that in today, lots of activity. Hope that helps! |

funny story actually! ....we were ahead of the porsches all the way up, but as they arrived one of them came up to us and started poking fun at our "chicken strips" that not one of us acually had; and boasted about chasing down guys like us on their local twisties.... and we laughed and laughed and laughed and waited for a while thinking we might have an opportunity to make this fu er eat his words.... but then we just wanted to ride so we did | |
