Weather and noobs in bend
So when does the weather get good enough for me to make it from Corvallis to bend? I am very new to riding (maybe a total of 15 hours on a bike) so I need no ice/minimal gravel on the road. Both in the bend area and over the passes to get there.

I finally got a bike and want to get some camping in.

Is that possible by late march? Or is that a stretch?

The newbie excitement sucks, especially since the winter holds me back from going anywhere cool.

March, iffy. Early to mid April would be a safer bet for ice/snow free Santiam Pass.

Of course you could go now... just trailer your bike over the pass!

So are you saying its just the pass that is bad?

March is generally fine though cool over here. Just getting over the pass on two wheels might be dicey.

Well i was going to start a new thread but this one is still at the top.

I am planning a backpacking trip in the three sisters wilderness area. I am curious if anyone knows how much snow there is at about 6000-7000 feet right now.

I am trying to decide if my 4Runner can make it through the snow, and If I can manage the hike without snowshoes/crampons.

Any help from some locals would be awesome

There's a couple feet and still snowing today at pass level (4800 ft). You're probably looking at 4-5 ft or more at 6-7000 ft depending on the terrain at any one spot. Little early for that trip. The upper trails don't open normally until june or july, the lower trails can open up by may but too soon to tell.

You might stay in touch with Chris Sabo at the Sisters Ranger District office, he tracks that info.

As far as bikes over the pass, I came over a few hours ago and it was snowing and very heavy winds. Roads were wet but clear, some cinders. If you could catch the second dry day in a row it might be ok. I saw bikes at the coast the last few days, if you're itching for a ride in the next week or two that might be a better bet.
