Building Karma Capital

So I'm on my way home tonight from work and, as I'm coming through Granite Falls, I see a fellow motorcyclist sitting in front of the Nelson Petroleum station. He's kneeling down next to a pretty nice looking Yamaha XJ550, black in color. It looks just like mine, only chain driven. I can tell he's having problems so I pull in next to him.

Sure enough, his chain has come off and he has no clue on how to fix it. I examine the situation and quickly figure out the chain is balled up at...

Gettin' Hosed!

Updated 03-03-2010 at 09:40 AM by Gamuru

The day started out well enough. Woke up pretty early and I was too excited about getting on with it to fall back asleep. April and I decided to get up and go after some breakfast.

Jeff (jdpesz) was scheduled later that day for a visit. He was bringing with him a new master cylinder and front brake pads. We were going to install both and then go for a ride. Well, that's...

Motorcycle Maintenance Meetup, Revisited

Updated 02-09-2010 at 11:44 AM by Gamuru (I mis-remembered)

First, let me start by saying, "Thank you!" to Travis and Dave. Travis did a great job organizing this event and getting everyone together. Dave for opening up his garage and letting us use his lift, tools, and supplies. Again, thank you both for your efforts. It was much appreciated. (And thanks to all the participants for putting up with me sticking my camera all up in your grill and hovering over your shoulder while you were trying to work. It was for a good cause. I swear! )...

KLR Kraziness

Posted 02-06-2010 at 06:55 AM by Gamuru (The Path Less Traveled)

It's been extremely busy here these last few weeks. With April and I getting our KLRs and having to sort out their unique problems, I haven't had much time to sit down and write.

We went for a couple of "test" rides yesterday to try out the lowering links I put on April's bike to see...

Time and Money

Posted 01-24-2010 at 05:34 PM by Gamuru (The Path Less Traveled)

Here's the skinny on April's new-to-her '87 KLR650. We pretty much got home on the battery alone. I've seen candles put out more light than her headlight.

I did some research and it can either be a faulty Regulator/Rectifier or a bad/shorted Stator. Well, there's the possibility that a wire got pinched, but probably not. How am I going to fix the charging system? After the battery is charged, I'll swap my Reg/Rec with hers to see if it is charging. If not, I'll do some in depth testing...

...and that's a good thing!

That's right, boys and girls, yours truly got himself a new-to-him '88 KLR650. I picked it up for $1,200. Wasn't it just a short week ago I was saying I wanted a dual sport? And BLAM!! One comes and hunts me down. Cheap, too.

A friend of a customer just happened to be selling his, so I snatched it up. When I went to look at her, I about fell...

Tired Again?!?

Posted 09-17-2009 at 06:59 AM by Gamuru (The Path Less Traveled)

While sitting in Ike's last Friday for dinner with the wife, I noticed what looked like a piece of chewing gum stuck to the rear tire of my scoot. After we finished, I walked out to see what it was. Yeah, not gum... cords. The tire was worn out. You know, the one I just put on in February; just eight short months and barely 11,000 miles ago. Man, that was quick.

I've ordered another one from Cycle Barn in Smokey Point and will keep track of the miles on this tire. If it wears out...

A few weeks ago I had to tow the bike home when it refused to start.. then the starter circuit failed, that took the ignition too so I couldn't kick it..

Finally this weekend I got the carbs cleaned, starter and ignition fixed.. It was running great!
Took it to work this morning.. I'm half way across the 240 from Kennewick to Richland when suddenly the the back of the bike drops.. The she starts to wiggle.. aww crap!! rear tire is flat!!!!
Pull in clutch, ease it down...

Missing and Stumbling?

Posted 08-22-2009 at 06:39 AM by Gamuru (The Path Less Traveled)

Do you suffer from missing and stumbling? When you roll on the throttle, does it feel like one of your cylinders has gone out to lunch? Well, my friends, read on. I may have a solution for you.

Yesterday, in preparation for the big XJ Bikes meet up in Tumwater, Washington, I decided to show my wife's bike some love by giving the engine a good cleaning with some foaming engine degreaser. After reading the instructions on the can, I proceeded to make the engine ready for the grime-cutting...
