So, Will Smith is getting lambasted in the press for some remarks he made to The Daily Press. Smith said:
"Even Hitler didn't wake up going, 'let me do the most evil thing I can do today.' I think he woke up in the morning and using a twisted, backwards logic, he set out to do what he thought was good"
The reporter preceded the quote by saying "Remarkably, Will believes everyone is basically good."
That is exactly the wrong point. What Smith was really saying was "No one thinks of themselves as bad". This is a fairly profound train of thought. From Osama Bin Laden to your shithead boss, no one thinks that the things that they do are wrong, much less evil.
No matter how many people think that GWB is a simple headed, religious zealot, he sits down in the oval office every day thinking that what he is doing is right, perhaps even more so because of how much criticism he receives. No matter how much the world looked on in horror, Saddam Hussein was sure to have perfectly good reasons for gassing the Kurds.
I guess the point is that we should always consider the possibility that that "the other guy" thinks that he is just as right as we think we are....

Fair enough. We all think we are right because our opinion is formed from reference points which are only our own.
But people like George Bush (either one) have no business running the free world, not in good conscience anyhow. Seriously, things are fundamentally wrong with all people, and not just the Bushes.
Molly Ivins, deceased author, vehemently warned Americans of what a nutjob-reject W was, but it did not matter. And she started her rant at least back in the 1980s.
The world champions segregation of people, and that is what keeps the common good at bay. Most everyone is glad to have the opportunity to stand on the shoulders of someone else should it allow them to feel as though they are somehow better off, if even only in their own eyes.
Just look at the Olympics. My country is better than your country. And so it goes...
No one seems to think their own country is screwed, least not those citizens of countries with an advantage through birthright.
Hitler kept the people divided. So does Bush. So will the next guy. They will all champion with chest-pounding zeal their own patriotic BS. Why? It serves their purposes, however twisted those may be.
And the people will continue to rally.
Amazing.
One world. We all share it. The world owes nobody.Posted 02-16-2008 at 03:37 AM by samuidave

Hey Jason,
I'll add here--
I am with Will Smith--Pretty sure I know what he means.
I also would add (learned this from work) that people in higher-up positions sometimes surround themselves with "yes" men and eliminate others that tries to let them know they might be wrong. (Those non-patriotic bastards!). They run them out based upon them being confrontational or disrespectful, and....vuala! Instant success!
The result of this re-enforces their feeling of doing what is right even though it might be askew or outright wrong.
My wife works well at doing this(contradicting). This is NOT to say that I am in a postition of power.
