Fell behind, ouch. I’m glad we weren’t running from a bear, you would have left me for dead. Actually I though we were having a gentle stroll through the woods and then the steering started to get really heavy and each corner was super sloppy. At first I thought the road must be more uneven than it looks but after 2-3 miles of corners there was no way the road was that bad. I took a descent corner several clicks over posted and the bike was all over the place, it felt like the rear tire was going to come off the bike at any moment, which is when i slowed way down and watched the guys speed off. I slowed down to about 40 and leaned out to look at the tires, the front looked good but the back was completely flat. I did a little mental cursing and found a safe place to pull over. I figured 10guy and R1Jackal would surly turn around to see what I was doing because I don’t drop back in the corners but NOOOOO!

About five minutes later the rest of our group came rolling up and I flagged them down. Rick let me borrow his phone and called my insurance (Progressive) which I do have towing coverage. Its only a $1 month add on and totally worth it. They called a tow truck and then called the nearest Honda dealer to see if they would have a replacement tire. They took care of everything. The tow was to St. Johns Honda 56 miles away and they would cover everything. Rick stayed with me so I wouldn’t be attacked by the mountain folk; they scare easily but will soon come back in greater numbers; and we sent Teague and Jennifer on their way, no reason for all of us to sit there. The tow truck showed up an hour and a half later and when the guy stepped out of the truck he took one look at my bike and said I can’t tow your bike, I have to get a huge strap around the lower trees. He suggested taking off the fairing so he could access the tree, that’s when I started getting nervous. Rick had mentioned he had some tire plugs earlier but we had decided that that probably wouldn’t work because this wasn’t a puncture it was more of a 3” long slash. Must have been one of those razor blades R1 Jackal was throwing out in front of me. I asked Rick if he would get out his tire plugs, we are plugging this thing and I’m riding it. We crammed in one of those gooey black plugs and aired it up and sure enough it held.

We headed back through Vernonia which was pretty fun but about 20-30 miles down the road the plug came out and the tire went flat again. We stopped, re plugged and aired up and were back on the road. We didn’t get into St. Johns in time and the plug was holding so I rode the tire the rest of the way home about 170 miles. It was still holding pressure this morning. I have to say Rick just made the top of my list of riding buddies you want on your team, he had everything needed to pretty much rebuild a bike and he really saved my bacon not to mention a $250 dollar tire at the dealer. I did the only rational thing I could do and sacrificed the rest of the tire to the tire gods this afternoon as a neighborhood display for the kids. There is a brand new pair of pilots on their way. There is only one thing better than a new pair of tires but my wife won’t let me play with them so I will just have to be happy with the tires. Here are a few pictures of the ordeal and the final sacrifice. I did learn that someone in the group needs to carry a bar harness and Rick thank you very much for your help. I am going to start carrying my plug gun and a small assortment of tools just in case.

Doug at the coffee shop.

Picking up Teague and Jennifer.

The fabled slash.

Rick and I re plugging the tire.

Rick and I at the St. Helens motorcycle shop.

The plug still in after riding home.

Punishing the tire for failing me.

I love your avatar picture; my helmet and bike usually look like that when the day is done.
Part of the scenic route is rough road, but you can skip the rough part too. From about Netarts south, it can be a lot of fun, especially when you go past the Cape Lookout State Park. That pic of my helmet was just taken about 2 weeks ago. I started in Tillamook with a clean helmet, and collected all that bug juice on 101 and the Miami River Road to Seaside in less than one hour. I could hardly see through my visor.

I carry the plug kit since I've had two of these flats occur to me, but I've never seen the mini compressor. Where did you find that?

Sorry to hear about your trouble. This is where the contact list under construction would be really valuable. I am between Astoria and Seaside with a utility trailer and Canyon Dancer bar end tie downs. With a phone call, I could've been out there to pick you up and get you over to our local motorcycle shop. I don't know if they would've had a tire in stock, but at least you wouldn't have been sitting out there for 2 hours waiting.

Now, I want to know about that rack and luggage system on your bike. That looks awesome! I could really use something like that to take some trips on my bike. Can you leave off the center bag and carry a passenger with just the saddle bags? Could I get a rack and luggage like that for my R1? I love the paint job on your bike too.

Thanks for the info. What is, "Joe's is dead?" Is that the name of a store? You've got to excuse us small town coastal folks. We don't make it to the big city too often.

I built the rack because i cant strap luggage on my bike either. Its a one off but i have been thinking of building and marketing them. the first model eliminated the passenger pegs but i have a design for a new one that would incorporate the passenger pegs so you could carry a passenger or bags. Yes you can just carry the top bag or just saddles or both. I almost never take the bags off any more.

Used to be GI Joes, then was sold and became just Joes and then just a few months ago they went out of business.

Cycle Gear also carries the compressor.

When you build them, I want to get one. You could probably show me how to do it, but I doubt I could build it that nice. It looks like a factory job in the pics. I've looked at quite a few luggage systems for sportbikes, and yours looks like the one I'd like the most. You can always use my bike for fitting and testing.

Gotcha! I knew GI Joes, just not "Joes is dead". I'll be looking for one of those, especially after I get some decent luggage to ride a little longer distance.

ooeddym's luggage system is very nice. When I've had the chance to ride with him I have not seen it appear anything but stable. There is not any discernible movement in the bags even when in hyper drive. Has to be one of the best soft systems I've seen.

I have a perfectly sized area under my seat for my compressor and worm kit, no matter what I have it with me. It is the same set that Rick used.

That's what I'd like to have for luggage. What do I need to do to buy or build it? I've driven on a few trips that I could have rode if I had that luggage.

My trunk space is pretty tight on the R1. I've got a small intercom box and tool kit in mine, but I'd like to try to fit that compressor in there too. I usually carry my plug kit in a tank bag, but it would fit under there too.

I just used 1/2 od .0625 wall steel tubing and a rigid brand manual tube bender. I had a couple 5/8 bushings turned at a machine shop and then borrowed a buddies welder to stick it all together. Once assembled i sent it out to get powder coated. I used one of the passenger peg mounting holes up front and the sub frame had a couple holes where the rear fender use to bolt for the back mounts. Its super solid, it would make a nice crash cage if i didn't have the bags on. I have had it in the 140 range and the bags don't budge. O yeah, you think your trunk on your R1 is small, you should see the trunk in my blade. Its non existent.

Cool videos Jackal Listening to your bike it is no wonder I had to work hard at keeping up on 53, you were using the extra 50 horses your bike provides. It also sounds a lot better now than before.

ooeddym - did you use a mig or tig welder to weld your frame up? That is some very thin steel you used.

Is your new tire mounted up yet?

sorry I missed all the action!
Man, you guys had a crazy day!
Meanwhile, I was on my way to Grass Valley for the track day. Sunday night we met the track day organizers at Wild Winds Ranch for BBQ. The track and ranch are really out in the middle of no where - here's a pic of our Dirty Ducs the day after driving on their roads (this is after cleaning my bike a bit ):

Had a blast at the track - sorry no pix, I was too busy sweating! I didn't crash but I did manage to put some scrapes on my foot pegs, levers, and boots I even squealed the tires once braking for one of the turns

For everyone who doesn't have enough balls to do a track day, here's another option:

Nice vids, Jackal. 53 looks like FUN. I noticed in the first video you used your turn signal before passing a cage on the double yellow - does this make it legal?

Thanks 10Guy & Ducatichick for the video compliment! I always try to be courteous to my fellow motorist when passing and give the proper signals. Wait… what’s that last part of your message? ….. I can’t quite read it, the screens all going fuzzy ……. Oh well, I’ll have to catch up with you later, damn computer.

That is a good job then, those small migs aren't the most stable at low currents.

No new tires yet but they are on the way. Doug recommended riding the 6 so i pulled it out and cleaned it up so worst case i can ride my old bike.

You've got skills, talent and tools. I'm lacking at least two of those. I only fly helo's for a living. I'm sure I could do it with practice, training and money for a welder, tube bender and other tools, but by the time I'm done, it would take several months and more money than just buying a rack. How long did you spend engineering and building it? Maybe you could help or show me how to do it for some compensation. Would it take a day, or a week? I have no idea.

Actually I thought about it for a month and had it built in a weekend. It was really pretty easy once you have an idea of what you want. I can snap some close up pictures so you can see how it is put together. it can be taken off in less than two minutes. You can definitely build one. Powder coating covers a lot of mistakes.

I guess I'd like to try it. I just want to make it look like it was done professionally, not by me in my garage. Where do you buy the tubing? How would I bend it without a tube bender? I might need to borrow and learn how to use the welder also. Did you buy the luggage first and build it to match your luggage, or will any luggage work on it.

You can see that I'm starting from rock bottom. My dad lives in Roseburg and was a welder for over 20 years. I'm sure I could get help from him. If you take some good pics, I'll show them to him and he could probably help me do it. Thanks.

Sorry i was out, i will get some pictures up tomorrow. You can build one its not difficult just take your time and make sure everything is square to the bike. I just went down to the local steel shop, SteelCo, in Albany and the 1/2 tube is standard.

You will definitely need a bender or the tubing likes to collapse. I bought mine off of ebay for about $30.

The luggage is just the standard nelson riggs sport saddle bags and tail pack. I originally had them on my 92 zx6 which they fit quite nicely without any rack system. It wasn't until i tried to put them on my cbr that i had problems. The tail sections on most new sport bikes are really pointy so as your probably aware saddle bags wont hang properly and with undertail exhaust there isnt to many places to wrap bungees around.

In a way i did build the racks for my specific bag set but i think you could strap almost any soft bag to it.

I would really like to build a new rack where i can mount hard bags. Maybe a set of VFR bags would be nice, not that i want to ride int he rain but hard bags lock up so you can leave your bike unattended.

If you dad has welded for 20 years he should be able to build this with his eyes closed. After its all welded remove any welding splatter and smooth out any sharp point then powder coat it. Powder coating is almost indestructible and will hold up to the constant rubbing the bags will produce. I had mine coated for $50. if you bring it to them in a nice clean state then they don't have to do any prep work which will save you a little money.

Here is the tail I will want it mounted on:

The micron pipes are sweet. I can see from the wear on your tires your not afraid to corner. You need ot come out riding with us. We have this guy with a Vstrom 1000 that thinks he is riding a sport bike and leads at a spirited pace.

bolting anything to the back definitely looks like a challenge but where there is a will there's is a way. I just noticed you have a throttle rocker on there, i use one also and love it for trips.
