| Endorsed Joined: Jan 2009 From: around the next corner .... | Well, it’s been a couple of days since someone posted a ride. I’ll be making a run to Astoria and climb the local tower, kind of like Rocky! Looking over the route I’m thinking of stopping at Forest Grove for first fuel stop, then onto Astoria for lunch. Then a nice stroll down the Oregon Coast with some side routes and stops for enjoying the views; fuel in Lincoln City and maybe dinner in Newport depending on what time we arrive. This will definitely be an all day event so prepare accordingly. The ride will start at Creekside Coffee, Saturday 7/25, arriving around 8:30 am, kick stands up at 9 am. See the link below for the route; leads & sweep riders are welcome. http://ridewithgps.com/routes/3041 |

It takes just a little under two hours to get to Tillamook and 45 minutest to get to Astoria. We could stop at the cheese factory in Tillamook but it is so ridiculously busy there all the time. |

R1 Jackal, since you instigated this longer ride I have to ask - Do you have any feeling left in your buttocks or is your bike just that comfortable? ![]() Wait, maybe I don't want to know. Bravura and I are still pondering whether to join the ride. The memories of sore butts and seized knees on the way home from California are still fresh in our minds. I guess we're a maybe. |

A couple of factors with me and longer rides; I’ve been doing them since I was legally able to ride, my wife keeps telling me I have no ass, for some strange reason the R1 is a good fit for me and am able to run hours without a break, and yes I think the seat is pretty comfortable for a stock seat.I hope you and Bravura join us, its shaping up to be a good ride with good company (the usual suspects!) plus I promise to make numerous stops for breaks and pictures. Besides it would be a good opportunity for you to get some serious miles under your belt on the new bike, maybe even lead! Hoo-rah

I would think that Triumph would be like riding a barcalounger, somewhat reminiscent of a Harley. No really you guys should come, i think we will have a lot of fun and we can see who is afraid of heights at the Astoria column. |

| Newbie Joined: Jul 2009 From: Albany, OR | I haven't checked the routes but you might like to know there is a large bicycle ride going on that day in the Hillsboro area. They are expecting about 1000 cyclists and they will have escorts and such. The bicycle ride starts at 7:00 AM. Here is a route map: http://main.diabetes.org/tdc09/46001_110mile.pdf and event details can be found here: http://main.diabetes.org/site/TR?pg=entry&fr_id=5623 Edit: I looked at the routes a little more in detail. You will be on the same roads as the cyclists going through Yamhill and some up by Hagg Lake. However, that is in the latter half of the bicycle ride and unless you hit that area around noonish, I don't think you'll encounter anyone. Besides, they will be going the opposite direction. You'll also be crossing their path at Greenville. Here you might encounter cyclists as it's fairly early in the loop. I think that's about it. Last edited by Tweezak; 07-19-2009 at 10:40 PM.. |

It's kinda chilly in Seaside yesterday and today, make sure to wear jackets (I've seen some people riding with teeshirts), and it wouldn't hurt bringing some warm clothing. Lewis and Clark Rd. from Astoria to here was awesome yesterday!

| Pit Crew Joined: Jan 2009 From: North Albay I Ride: Tengai, V-Strom, and KLX439 | Hmmmmmm, I have to wonder if it is the number of miles that is scaring people off or just the company going ![]() There will be many parts of this ride where the max speed will be very conservative due to the roads we are taking. I suspect that Rick and his detectors will lead significant portions, gotta love his technological advantage over the rest of us. We also tend to stop regularly so no one will be left behind. I'll even offer to ride sweep if anyone is worried about that. I can assure you the scenery and roads will be worth the ride. |

If I had thought about it I would have headed North after lunch. I could have met you all in Astoria. The Fog on the coast sucked, and the traffic was horrible. I was stuck in 5 MPH junk 2 times around Lincoln City and South of Newport. That part was crap. HWY 34 was excellent with some spirited riding. 1 hour 10 minutes back to A town. As it would appear I crap out at 80 on that road. Just can not tell what will be in the road. No nerve I guess. But fun anyway. FWIW, I rode it solo after lunch. j |

| Pit Crew Joined: Jan 2009 From: North Albay I Ride: Tengai, V-Strom, and KLX439 | What a ride First let me thank Jackal for organizing a great ride, he really picked some fantastic roads . And I would also like to thank him for allowing me to have a turn or two at point, Misty seems to do better in clean air.![]() I can't speak for everyone but I sure had a good time. Sorry there are no pictures but the wife has the camera, something about wanting to take pictures of our new neice ![]() We started out with four riders, Jackal, ooeddym, Rick, and myself. Bravure was kind enough to ride Trobairitz's bike down to see us off. The trip up 99W was, now how can I say it, boring as necessary. The law enforcement community was out in full force. Not just on this stretch but we saw more police officers this trip than I have in many years . Oh well, we survived without any new black marks on our records, at least Jackal and myself did.![]() As we got close to McMinnville Rick blew by us to show us a cut off that took us by most of McMinnville and all of Carlton and straight to Yamhill. There we turned on to 47, Misty started to feel a bit restless and so we were happy when Rick motioned us by. Not much fun to be had on this part of 47 between McMinnville and Banks, there are a few sweepers but nothing really tight or challenging. Once through Banks we turned west on 26 and promptly ran into a parade, not an organized one but just one long line of cages going incredibly slow. In Manning we met up with a couple of Rick's friends who were going to join us on part of our journey. There was Tige on his Honda 919 and Jennifer (I hope that is her name, I'm terrible at remembering them ) on her sv650. Both riding naked,,,,,,,,,bikes that is .From there is was just a short jaunt to where 47 turns north toward Vernonia. This is where the fun really began. Tige decided to join ooeddym, Jackal, and myself for a spirited ride into Vernonia and our first gas stop. No sooner than we had pulled into the station Rick and Jennifer were there, apparently they were having some fun too. Vernonia is one of those towns that grew up next to the highway so they go on forever but are only a couple of blocks wide. It is also one of those places where it is easy to pick up a bit too much speed too soon. Fortunately we were able to escape without seeing any flashing lights. In fact this whole trip we were lucky in that every time we saw the police we were already slowed down or at least had a chance to slow down a bit. ![]() The road started to get some serious twists to it and the fun really began. The sportbike guys would like to have had it be a bit smoother I'm sure but Misty doesn't mind flexing her legs. Actually 47 was fairly smooth but after we turned off onto 202 the pavement had more "flaws" in it, fortunately they were easy to overlook considering the amount of 25 - 35 mph corners. It did make things exciting, but nothing like those damn 25er's that sneek up on us . Damn if those don't leave a mark.At some point we separated into two groups of three with the stooges in the lead. I was attempting to keep an eye on those pesky sportbikes in my mirrors and soon the road got pretty rough. One bike started to fall off the pace, I could see that, and then the road started a long section of tight corners . All my attention was needed looking forward so I put my head down and twisted my right wrist just a bit more, there was fun to be had. When we broke out of that particular section of road and had a short straight stretch all I could see was Jackal in my mirrors. I figured that we must have gotten separation from ooeddym, I was correct (partially at least) and later we would find out how and why.But for now there were more corners to carve and I still had one of those buzzing four cylinders chasing me. We made to Astoria with very little difficulty with cages or bicyclists. The cruisers on the other hand . As we got into Astoria I pulled off to regroup, Jackal was right there. I looked at the time and soon it had been 5 minutes and no sign of ooeddym or the rest of the group, 10 minutes, 15 minutes????? So I figured that I should check my phone, sure enough it said I had one new voicemail. Dial and password given and I hear Rick, he says ooeddym had a flat and that it was not fixable. I called him back and found out that they had a tow truck in route and Rick offered to stay with ooeddym, or should we call him OOeddym now , and make sure he makes it home OK. Further more Tige and Jennifer had just left making their way our direction. So we waited until they showed up and went into Astoria and had a late breakfast at the Pig N Pancake. Yes they do make some delicious pancakes.Tige and Jennifer decided to take the easy way back to Portland and so we sort of said goodbye, or not? We were going to go back inland a bit and then cross the river to check out this road, they were going to go straight down 101. Tige ended up following us to tell us that and apparently Jennifer went the other way. So we saw Tige riding off chasing her down, we thought this would be the last time we were going to see him that day but..... So back to this road, it was very smooth and had nice banking on it's corners. I would have to say it would be a solid 9+, Jackal on the other hand, I wasn't sure that he wouldn't turn right around and ride it again. He definitely looked like he was having fun, and Misty was really working to keep up . Too bad this road had to dump us back onto 101 around Seaside . As we are cruising, as in slooooowwww, on 101, who should ride right up between us??? Tige . And even better, he still had not found Jennifer![]() Soon enough we turned off parade 101 onto parade 26. Good thing it was only for a couple of miles until we turned off onto 53. Now the fun was about to begin again. Yep, more smooth road, banked corners, very little traffic, a motorcyclist dream. Except for the truck that had to correct his line for Jackal and then over corrected back into my lane That took me a couple of corners to get my rhythm back again. The rest of the road was just about perfect though. We had to pay for it. The entire stretch around Tillamook Bay was a real nightmare. Rockaway Beach, Garibaldi, and of course Tillamook itself. Once south of that area the road opened up a bit, well it did after we passed a bunch of cars . And we had smooth sailing into Lincoln City, or just north where 18 runs into 101. Lucky for us Rick showed us a way around a lot of the traffic. It was still 5 miles of hell, errrr 101, before we turned up the Siletz River. The first time I rode with Jackal, I followed him down the river, this time I was able to lead him up stream20 was actually not that bad, most traffic let us by and if not we went by anyways We got back into Philomath and stopped to get gas and BS for a few minutes. As we were talking, I mentioned that I had 364 miles on my odometer for the day, Jackal looked at his and believe it or not it said the same thing, 364 miles. Not bad for a days ride given the roads we were on.I found out that Rick and OOOOOOeddym had their own adventure I'm sure one or the other will share, but that they both made it home OK. I can only hope that Tige found Jennifer and that they too made it home safe and sound. Last edited by 10guy; 07-25-2009 at 10:31 PM.. |

| Endorsed Joined: Jan 2009 From: around the next corner .... | Thanks 10guy for the narrative , you beat me to it! I’ll just fill in a few areas. First of all, yesterday was a very interesting ride, not much went as planned but everyone has stories. Secondly, as Rick suggested, before a ride gets underway it may be a good idea to swap cell phone numbers. And more importantly (ooeddym) let’s not discuss whether our 90% worn tire is good for another months ride before going on a ride. I’m already taking a hard look at my 85% worn tire and may replace this week. ![]() A very special thanks and kudos to Rick for staying with ooeddym and waiting for the tow truck! Since the whole group didn’t make it to Astoria, we didn’t make the trek to the Astoria tower. I’ll save for another day. Hwy 202 was a fun little road, but a bit to rough for my taste. My suspension was a little too tight for some of the “flaws” in and along the road and I found myself sliding & bouncing in a few on those 25 mph corners that 10guy describes. On the other hand, the Lewis & Clark Road (below Astoria) and Hwy 53 are now on my top 5 list, right up there with Wolf Creek Road! On both roads the asphalt was clean and smooth with the right amount of twists and turns. The old R1 was in her element as I was “spiriting” through the corners and blasting down the straights, I even managed to wheelie out of a corner going over a small rise in the road. I didn’t get a whole lot of changes to check on 10guy due to the fact that head and body were continuously off to one side of the bike or the other and eyes looking ahead to the next corner. So much for the blue bike theory. Hwy 229 was as fun as ever as I was chasing 10guy through the twisties. There was very little traffic on all three of these awesome roads and the both of us were running well together. I would sometimes feel sorry for the few cars and RVs that we would ride up on, then in a blink of one eye, we would be around and 100 feet ahead! Ooeddym – I won’t say it was the ‘ride of the century’ because you weren’t there, but maybe the ride of the year!I didn’t make it home until 9:30 that night, I stopped off at a friend’s house to meet up with the wife, have a few beers, and spin yarns about the day’s events. I’ll be looking forward to the next Saturday’s ride were we will properly bring Osufireman into the fold! ![]() Thanks to all that came and joined the ride. I have two pictures and a ton of video that I’ll process tonight or tomorrow, and will post early this week. 10guy & I waiting in Astoria, unaware that there were tire problems ![]() Fueling up in Tillamook ![]() |

| WMRRA Qualifier Joined: Jan 2008 From: Warrenton, Oregon I Ride: 2004 Yamaha R1 | I wish I knew you guys were going to be over here. I live between Astoria and Seaside. I could've joined you for part of your ride. I agree that 202 sucks pretty bad. I've done it once, just once. You found some of our better roads over here, but it sounds like you probably missed some too. If you went through Rockaway Beach and Garibaldi as described above, you missed the Miami River Road, which is one of my favorites. Look at this map and zoom in to see what I'm talking about; http://www.mapquest.com/mq/2-BFV53lOsq6R8DGj75m3O. It comes right off of Hwy 53 about a mile before 53 runs into 101, and goes just south of Garibaldi, missing all those little towns with all their traffic. My map also includes the Three Capes Scenic Route and a short run to the east of 101 between Neskowin and Lincoln City. Well it sounds like you all had a good time. I'll try to keep a closer eye on the forum so I don't miss coast rides in the future. We don't have as many guys over here to ride with, so it's rare to find a group to go with. |

Thanks a109driver! I’ll put Miami River Road and Shinglebolt Road on the list of roads to hit this summer. I’m sure we’ll be back since half of our party never made to the coast due to tire problems. We have been on the road west of Tillamook; the section of road from Tillamook to Cape Meares is pretty bad with the gravel section and bad pavement areas. Sorry to hear your area is lacking with similar riders. We have a good group of riders around here that can get together and ride well with a varying of bike types and riding styles. I guess we’re lucky. I love your avatar picture; my helmet and bike usually look like that when the day is done.

| Endorsed Joined: Mar 2009 From: Philomath I Ride: 90 kawasaki Concours | The Other ride No reason to rehash the ride up to the point of the flat... ok maybe just a little. We met up with Teague and Jennifer, friends from Portland. Teague and I have been trying to make this ride for a while and something always happens to create some challenge that adjusts the ride. Coming into Mist, I thought Mr. OS Trooper was going to do it but he just waved at us as we went by. It was amazing how many motorcycles were on the road, when we went through Birkenfield the little town was lined with Motorcycles... a couple miles out of town we saw the signs for Ride 21. Jennifer, Teague and I went on for a few miles and on the side of the road was ooeddym looking at his very flat tire. We stopped to assist and he decided it would be best because of the slice in the tire that it would be best to call a tow truck. I sent Teague and Jennifer on and agreed to hang with ooeddym. We were expecting a two hour wait but after 1.5 hours the tow truck driver showed up with a flatbed truck. After he looked at the bike he determined that he could not safely load the bike on the trailer without damaging it. His option was to call a tow truck out of Portland (another 2 hour wait for sure). ooeddym's insurance co. made arrangements for a new tire to get put on at St. Johns Honda. We just needed to get there. Unfortunately a two hour wait would have gotten us there after they closed. He decided to try the plug kit that I carry and see if it would hold air. We tried it and it worked. We decided it was best to head back to Portland for the new tire. Back towards Birkenfield and over 47 to Clatskanie and down Hwy 30. About 1/2 way down 47 the tire went flat again. Out came the plug kit... the slime mini air compressor and we were back on the road in about 15 minutes. It was getting late as we were coming into St. Helens so we stopped at St. Helens Honda to see if they had a tire and could put it on. We were there about 4:15pm. They were uninterested in assisting. The response that we doubt that we have a tire that would fit on the bike and if we did I'm closing in 45 minutes gave us the impression that they would not be of any assistance. We did get number for St. Johns Honda. We called to see if they would still be able to assist us and the response was no. (Lesson... these two Honda dealers suck). We decided that since the plug was working we would take it easy and head back to Corvallis. We headed down Hwy 30, hopped on the 405 to I-5 and headed south. Traffic was heavy and we were feeling hungry so we hopped off and Terwilliger and headed south to Lower Boones Ferry to Kruseway and the Olive Garden. We had a great dinner and when it started to cool, we headed south again on I-5. Not wanting to stick to the 5 we cut across to 219 at Arorua, south to St. Paul and then took the Wheatland Ferry across the Willamette. From there we headed south into Salem, west to 51 and down the Corvallis Independence Hwy to Adair Village. I got home about 9pm. Twelve hours after departure... not the ride we were expecting but what an adventure! I highly recommend carrying a plug kit and the Slime mini air compressor was well worth the $20 investment. |
