| Pit Crew Joined: Jan 2009 From: Oregon | Really! the final trip route .... Well, after some input from others and tweaking of the route, below should be the final routing Day 1, Corvallis to Klamath Falls http://ridewithgps.com/routes/6897 Day 2, Klamath Falls to Arcata http://ridewithgps.com/routes/7178 Day 3 – 4, Arcata back to Corvallis. 3rd night will be left to chance (no reservations); it will all depend on where we end up and how tired we all are at the end of the day. Route may also change at Happy Camp (Hwy 96), the option of traveling up Hwy 48 to Hwy 199 to Grants Pass may be used; the decision will be made at that time. http://ridewithgps.com/routes/7179 Tallyho ....... ![]() |

| Zone Head Joined: Jan 2008 From: Seaside/Warrenton, Oregon I Ride: 2004 Yamaha R1 | The route looks great except for all the freeway riding on day 2. I rode my R1 to work tonight with the luggage installed and some weight in the bags. They worked fantastic. I can't find anything wrong with them. I can only tell they're behind me when I look in the mirrors. I broke them in nice. It rained off and on for about 30 miles, so now the bags are seasoned. Now I just need to clean the bike again. Doug, I got your email. Your issue is a little different than mine. I've got a good idea to solve mine. I'll show you when I see you Thursday. |

Have you guys ever heard of Bartels Giant Burger? http://maps.google.com/maps?rls=com....44581740222740. It's a local joint in the Redding area. I think there are 3 or 4 of them. I grew up on them. I think we should eat at both places. We can compare them. My dad knows Dennis Bartels and his family has helped me when I've had breakdowns in Redding. Good people. | |

Hope you don't see the sprinkles today that we are getting (aw, is it raining on the football game again?). You've got a heck of a long ride today according to your route plan, my "Duckybutt" hurts just thinking about it! Is bike theft a problem in Klamath Falls?? |

| Zone Head Joined: Jan 2008 From: Seaside/Warrenton, Oregon I Ride: 2004 Yamaha R1 | Final Day - From Sutherlin to Home. We separated at Waldport. Eddy and Doug went east, and I went north. From there, they had about 30-40 minutes to Alsea and I had about 3 hours back to Warrenton. Did you guys make it all right? I did. I only bent a few laws and didn't have to hurt anybody. This was the most fun I've ever had on a motorcycle. We worked hard and played hard. It was well worth the effort and I can't wait to do it again, but it will be hard to beat this trip. My hands are still numb from twisting the throttle and hanging on. Here are my pics from today: Getting started at my mom's house in Sutherlin. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Doug and Eddy with my mom. | Pit Crew Joined: Jan 2009 From: Oregon | Hey all! Ooeddym & I made it to Alsea with no problems; I even rolled onto the grass field with 2 minutes to spare before the start of my son’s football game (which they won). Ooeddym parted company and bolted home on his final leg of the trip shortly after the start of the game; I hope he enjoyed the final set of twisties in the Alsea curves. As for the trip I will sum it up with a few comments, the details, I’m sure will come later. • The weather way perfect! • Traffic (except for larger cities and I5) was minimal to none! • Highway 36 lived up to and exceeded my expectations, think of it as a 130 mile GP road race / Island of Mann! • My fellow riders were awesome! All of us were evenly matched and each learned from one another; by the beginning of the 2nd day we were three formation flying road racers. • No performance awards and crashes! (always a plus). My only complaint was that the video camera bit the dust on the first day & we were only gone for 4 days! I’m already dreaming up the next trip!! Oh, and one final comment to my little yellow R6 friend out there ……. Oh no you didn’t !!!! ![]() |

| Endorsed Joined: Jun 2009 From: Battle Ground, Wa I Ride: cbr 1000 rr | We had a great four day run. I have done 1500-1600 mile runs before but usually in 5-6 days. So we would ride for two days and take a day or two off then two more days of riding. This is the first time I have done four days of solid riding not to mention running around 450 miles a day and only about two hours of that was freeway. All the rest was back roads. We found some of the best roads I have ever ridden on. Hwy 36 is amazing. ![]() ![]() This is how it all began. We look so excited and innocent, little did we know the horror that awaited us. This is R1 jackal (Doug), A109driver (John), and Rick. Rick showed up to give us a send off. ![]() I cant remember where this was but it was about an hour south of Corvallis. We stopped to see how everyone was doing and how the luggage was settling in. This was the first time Doug and John had packed luggage on their R1’s. ![]() ![]() I wish I was better at remembering the names of these places. This is a covered bridge that John knew about and suggested we stop for a photo op. I’m sure one of the other guys can put a name to this location. ![]() This was a fun stop. We stopped to see John’s mother in Sutherlin. Little did we know she had gathered all of her cougar friends to greet us. They really like Doug because he resembled some actor. Maybe BOB SAGET. ![]() After getting out of the cougar den, we gave them Bob as a peace offering, we started heading up hwy 138 to Crater lake and ran across a construction zone. The last time we went to California I learned a little trick when enouncing long lines of stopped traffic. As we were rolling up to the end of the line I called to Doug to follow me. I went around all the cars on the left to the head of the line and parked right next to the flagger. John and Doug followed in disbelief but there is safety in numbers. I didn’t see this but apparently there was a sheriff in the line of cars as well. No one said anything and when it was time to follow the pace car we were the first ones in line. The best part was after the construction zone we had smooth sailing almost all the way to Crater lake. It was like ODOT had removed all the traffic off the road just for us. ![]() Before Crater we stopped up at the Diamond lake turn off and fueled up. They only had regular unleaded but beggars cant be choosey. The gas was $4.25 a gallon. ![]() ![]() ![]() We made it to Crater lake and ran the rim. Who knew the posted speed was only 35 on the rim road. We probably set a record for how quickly we made it around the crater. At the proper speed that road is pretty fun. The weather was really nice. ![]() Here we are at the Rim lodge and these two guys are smiling because they both made bad passes heading up the winding road to the Lodge which was extra nice when all the people we passed caught up with us and could give us scowls and dirty looks. Someone must have said something to the ranger up there because on the way down we had a park ranger driving a blazer right on our butts the whole way down the hill. Needless to say we were on extra good behavior heading back down until we got out of the park. ![]() From crater we headed to Klamath Falls. We rolled in around 18:30 so we ended up catching a lot of bugs. Here Doug and John couldn’t take the carnage so they grabbed some window squeegees at the gas station and scraped off the mess. ![]() We stayed at the Micro Tell in. It was very nice with hot tub and continental breakfast. The next morning we went out and cleaned the bikes up before the ride. ![]() We headed over to Ashlandastan to see John’s brother. We rode Dead Indian Memorial road. It wasn’t very fun until we reached the top of the ridge dropping into the valley then it was awesome. Super curvy down hill with great pavement. Just don’t overshoot the right hander’s or you will have a fast trip to the bottom. No guard rails which I prefer. ![]() Unfortunately we rode down I-5 to Redding which was really boring but we were on a time line to get to Hwy 36 before the sun started to get to low. We didn’t want to be running west with the sun going down. We stopped at Yreka to get some fuel and shed some layers, the heat was turning up further south. ![]() ![]() On the way down to Redding I was getting bored so figured it was a good time for a photo op. Its hard to ride strait and take pictures. ![]() ![]() We made it down to Redding and stopped at In and Out burger for lunch. After all the corners we had done we were getting off the freeway at exit 678A and it had two decreasing radius corners. I had the first one just fine but as it opened up I figured I was through the worst of it so I started powering up. Just as I exited the corner you enter an even tighter one which I was completely caught by surprise. I didn’t lock anything up but I had the binders on full engagement and I was suctioned to the seat. I managed to scrub off enough speed and pushed the bike back over to make the corner. How bad would that suck, make it through all those corners the day before and lose it on an off ramp in Redding. I would have never lived that one down. After lunch we headed out to Hwy 36. I don’t have any pictures because once we started we didn’t stop until Wildwood store. We took Platina Rd to get to hwy 36 which was ok. Once we hit 36 it turned into a roller coaster. I have never ridden a rode with that many rises and twist combinations. It was awesome. If you are to ham fisted it was really easy to loft the front tire over the many ridges. I was a little heavy on a couple of them and ended up in a foot and a half to two foot wheelie cresting the top. It was super fun but required a lot of concentration. That style of road only lasted for maybe 20-30 miles then it changed into the standard fast smooth corners both tight and open. ![]() ![]() We stopped at Wildwood store for gas which I highly recommend because there is almost no fuel stops out there. The owner is a big motorcycle enthusiast so he has supreme on the pump. Its not branded but its supreme. ![]() ![]() The road after Wildwood store was totally amazing. It was just corner after corner with very little if almost no gravel on the roads. There were so many corners that you could practice every type of cornering technique multiple times. It was a great place to learn how to push you bike. Plus we ran across very few cars on the run. We stopped about 50-60 miles west of the store for a break and throw some gear on. We were cresting over to the west side of the range and it was starting to cool down. On the down hill side there were several spots that looked exactly like Hwy 1 out of Leggett which is also a section fo road I highly recommend. ![]() ![]() ![]() Here we are at the end of 36 where it joins 101 just south of Fortuna. Doug was still wound up from the trip but it was definitely a road worth driving down to Redding for. Doug’s tire was brand new when we started. We all left a sizable amount of rubber on 36. ![]() ![]() We stayed at the Howard Johnson in Arcata which wasn’t too bad. Here we are the next morning watching video that John had recorded the on 36. Reliving the glory. From Arcata we went up 299 to Willow Creek. 299 is fun but really fast. There are a couple 45mph sweepers that you can really warm your tires up on. Most of it had two lane up hill so we didn’t have to wait for any traffic. At willow creek we filled up because we had heard that there weren’t too many places to fill up on hwy 96. In Willow creek we saw four Leos. They were everywhere so don’t go bombing around up there too fast. We took 96 to happy camp which was pretty fun. Good pavement, very fast with big sweepers and a good canyon run. There was a unmanned card lock on the far end of town that would accept credit cards to we filled up and had lunch. From Happy camp we took Indian creek road which was really fun, lots of corners. That took us to Cave junction and then on to Grants Pass. I believe Doug is compiling some video from this run. We jumped on to I-5 again and bombed up to Sutherlin to Johns Moms house to spend the night. The freeway was miserable but I suppose it was the best section of I-5 to run if we had too. ![]() ![]() Johns mom was really nice and we even had a garage to park the bikes in for the night. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() We took some back roads over to hwy 42 which I cant remember. We got a little turned around but managed to find out way out to the hwy. We did randomly find a couple nice roads with a great canyon run. Once we got on to 42 we slowed down as not to attract any attention. I was bored again so I figured I would try to improve my camera skills. It was rather comical to watch im sure. Im riding with one hand and holding the camera pointed backwards over my shoulder with the other. I was all over the road and when the guys saw what I was doing they tightened up so I could get some good pictures. I was weaving, John was right on my tail and Doug was on the radio telling me we are all going to die for trying this. Luckily some of the shots came out quite nice. ![]() ![]() ![]() We stopped in Coos bay and had lunch at the Captains Choice restaurant. It was pretty good. Coos Bay was hot, like 90 degrees. ![]() After lunch we hopped on 101 and headed north to Waldport where Doug and I went to Alsea and John continued on 101 to Warrenton. As usual there was a ton of traffic on 101 but John’s ability to pass people put us in a great position to have fun on almost all the curves around the seal caves. I have never hit that section of road with no traffic in our way. We stopped for this shot before we split up. John and I had started on new tires and they definitely showed some signs of use after this ride. Doug was running race scuffs and his front tire was pretty much devoid of tread after this ride. It was a great ride and im sure we will all be up for another one next year. It was long and tiring but absolutely amazing and worth all the work. |
