My piece of the tail.... Pic heavy!
Hi everyone,
I do miss the PNW, it is hot here, humid and not very friendly.
My motel is in the area just north of the HUGE Atlanta airport. Kind of sandwiched between The poor part of town and the airport. Not much in the way of stores, loads of gas stations though.

My trip here on the plane was sweet. I was on the plane and a guy seated next to my assigned seat asked me: "are you alone?". I was not sure what he was asking so I kind of just looked at him and he asked again: "are you alone!" I answered:"yes." He said I would like to trade seats with you. I still wasn't getting it and he handed me his ticket, it was first class, he wanted my coach seat, because his wife couldn't get first class and he wanted to sit by her. So it was a great and comfortable flight.

I arrived here and made my way to the motel and found a room full of nice fixtures, a flatpanel 42 inch TV, a living room, fridge, kingsized bed and air-conditioning. An incredible room although the motel has some true deficits. Lacking any laundry facility, and the nearest one is 2 miles away in a part of town, whites aren't really welcome. There isn't a restaurant either, McDonalds is close and that is about it. So my plan to buy a bike is looking better and better.

I had set up a bike in advance. A 1981 Yamaha 750. Some of you have heard this, but when I finally made my way the 1&1/2 hour drive to it, it looked worn out.
When it finally started it, it backfired and popped like it was never going to run. I took it out and around the local street, it handled well enough, but I was increasingly concerned with the bike. That is about when I saw the oil spot on the ground where the bike had been parked as it was popping.

After closer inspection, I found the drain plug was a rubber plug. After placing a drain pan under it, I felt the plug and it fell out. WHEW, that was close.

We drove back to Atlanta. I was bummed as I had done so much work looking from Vancouver and now without wheels it could be tough to make this ride to the tail happen at all.

I went back into my room and sat around for a hour or so. You know, feeling sorry for myself, and grudgingly opened Craigslist. The first bike was a 1987 Suzuki 700 Intruder, in great condition, for the price I was looking to spend. It was to small physically but it looked the best and it was of modern design. A small V-twin and all the chrome looked perfect. I called them. The guy selling it was young and he suggested he bring it down right then. I said OK, if you want to. It took him 2 hours to make the trek to me. I bought it. It is a sweet bike, it had seat issues (torn and recover needs) and a weak clutch.

The clutch worked, but under hard acceleration it slipped. I also wanted to get the oils changed and the bike checked out. I found on a school bulletin board a fellow who did motorbike maintenance. I took it to him and he drove me back to the motel. A couple of days later I went and picked it up and began riding it all over. The clutch was not to bad, if I kept it easy and didn't expect it to rocket away from stop signs. I called him and he ordered a clutch. It took a week to arrive and the weekend went by slowly since I didn't dare ride the 160 miles north to the Tail, or should I??? I kept asking myself this question. I went to the laundry with the clothes bungeed to the back of the truder and sat on the curb waiting for the washers and dryers to finish, while I was the spectacle of the day for loads of people with much darker skin than I have. Driving by real slow and making comments which might make some people uncomfortable. I smiled and waved. They must have thought I was crazy or armed, because I was left alone, just inspected closely. Amazingly 2 washers and 2 dryers full cost me 3 bucks. That is cheep!

I folded my clothes and rode back to the motel and thought about North Carolina. I was really bugging me, what was I going to do Sunday? Sit here watching a movie I really would rather not or should I, could I ride?

So, Sunday Morning I packed up and left. The first 60 miles are slab and slowly changed to 2 lane country twisty roads and the next 100 were so fun, along rivers and through the mountains. The beautiful trees and rivers and streams and the seldom contacted cars made the ride so sweet. I made it to Robbinsville and found my friends motorcycle shop which was closed. Took a picture and went right to the Tail for my reacquaintance with it. It was so much fun, riding the little 700, even with a weak clutch through the tail.

I rode it 4 times and stopped at the top where there is a turn around watching the people come and go. Met a really nice guy from Montreal who was taking 6 weeks to ride across America. I was so pleased to stand there with him until the top of my bald head was completely sunburned. We enjoyed the time alot as we have similar interests. We watched a brand new Hayabusa rocket toward us and turn to head back into the twistys of the tail over and over. We laughed each time because we knew exactly why and really understood the reasons. Eventually we rode down the tail together and he stopped at the resort, I continued past waving good travels for a new friend. The ride back was longer and tougher as my hind end was quite sore and the smallish size of the frame was causing some leg and butt pain. So I stopped more often.

Don't Taze me Bro!!!! HA HA HA!!!!

I stopped and got some food at a burger joint in Tennessee. I met a guy who was retired from Eastern Airlines. He had flown for 29 years and flew many of the same aircraft I worked on for other airlines, so we had a great time reliving the good old days. He invited me to stay with him in Tennessee, just north of the tail in a small town named Marysville. He is 81 and has 5 bikes, he told me he has stopped riding over and over, but eventually can't stand it and rides away. He has a 2002 V-Strom 650 and loves it.

I made it back to my motel in Atlanta at 8PM, which totalled my time away from the room 14 hours short. I was so tired, I slept as soon as I sat down in my room.

I have been parking the truder under the entry of the motel, no one seems to care and I don't ask for permission. I also got it insured and tried to license it, but in Georgia I can't since I don't have a local address, and the law here is strict that all plates remain with the original owner of the plate. So I didn't have one. Here is the funny part, it is legal to make your own! Yep that is exactly what I said I made my own license plate.
Here is a picture.

I replaced the clutch yesterday, it is so much nicer now. It is now sweet on every issue, the seat I have ShoeGoo'd and Black Duct Taped to perfection, and the GPS mount is attached and power wire run from the bike. I have engineered a way to attach my large tank bag to the back seat and my magnetic tank bag works perfectly on the tank. So I am completely ready for my first "full" weekend in North Carolina. Yippee...........! Tomorrow is Friday, Class is out at 2 and I am leaving for "Gods Country"..........!

Today I rode to the Atlanta Zoo. It is really a nice Zoo. While there it rained hard, Lightning, Thunder and began to hail as well. The Lions were roaring and the Apes were screaming, what a place during a storm. The Zoo personel were running around like mad making sure the animals weren't harming themselves through fear. The panda's were as calm as could be and I watched the Komodo Dragon get really wierd. He was like wanting out, and at 12 feet long, we didn't agree.

More later,,,,,,,,,,

SWEET!~ home made license plates FTW! It's the new South!

I have purchased piles of Motorcycle magazines that didn't deliver half as well as your thread. I was Smiling and Laughing all the way through it. I was going to ask you to pick me up a sticker but they said on the website:

"We're sorry, but our stickers are only available for purchase within our physical store at Deals Gap, NC. The Dragon sticker is meant to be used as a badge of completion or proof of a right of passage, and therefore is not available on our online store. If that was the case, then anyone could get them anytime, and the true meaning would be lost."

So I guess we'll all have to admire yours on your new intruder.

Peace!

If you get a chance hit the Atalanta Aquarium as well, I understand it is the largest in the US. It was a very cool place when I was there last year.

Well, Where I left off was leaving Friday night after class.
I returned to the motel room and looked at the weather. Not very good idea to leave right then, I watched it out the window and on the weather channel and on the computer, all 3 agreed. It sucked!
The lightening began, thunder was so loud, it rained hard enough to flood the street and keep cars off the roads too. So I sat, wondering if this trend would continue the following days.
It was a long night as the rain hitting the window and the thunder and lightening kept me awake. It began to lighten up around 3am and off to dreamland I finally rode into. Awaking at 7am wide awake as the sun was coming up. The sky was as clear as good vodka and my mind wasn't going to slow enough to get more sleep. I got up and packed for the journey, went to the lobby for the "continental breakfast" (yes that means it sux!) grabbed some food and made my way out to the bike. It was still damp but fine. Strapped the bags on and left for the tail of the dragon once again. The ride was beautiful, very light traffic, the bike was running perfectly, my hind end was still willing to go, so life was good.

I made a few changes to the route and it was less spectacular although still a beautiful ride in an awesome place.

The village of Helen, NC is a tourist trap and a motorbike nightmare in reality. The entire town is about 3 miles wide and it take an hour through it.
I did stop at a very cool rock shop and have a look at some of the prettiest rocks I have ever seen.

It took me 4 hours to make it to the Tail, and I rode straight through it, all the way to hwy 411. The entire section is fun. I turned and went right back through it to Ken Wheelers motorcycle shop (the only shop near the gap) Ken is a good man. I met him in 2007 when we did the ESPN show there.

It was early in the morning. I rode up to the motorcycle shop at 5am, it was still dark inside. I sat on my BMW outside wondering if I had made a mistake on the time, place or maybe I had already missed it. No bikes were there, I knew there were supposed to be more riders, but it looked as if I was the only one there. Right then a man in a gray bathrobe came out. His hair was standing straight up, he looked a bit like an axe murderer. But bare footed in a robe, I figured I was about to be flashed. He walked right up to me in the slivers of yard lighting and yelled "are you Gusgus?" I said yes, he said "shut the damned thing off and get in here!" I did as the axe murderer suggested and there were my friends waiting for me. The bum was staying there as Ken was simply that kind, although he was an old retired drunk sergeant with a hygiene problem.

So Ken knew me, his wife wife remembered me as well and we chatted about the time away. Debbie Wheeler is a lawyer in Robbinsville, about 4 miles away, but does the front counter when she isn't doing the law stuff. Ken is so busy and he never stops working, like 12 hour days.
He had 4 bikes waiting as we chatted, I could feel his tugs to get back at it. The owners waited as well because they needed tires to ride the dragon as that was why we were all there. I could see a dirt bike further back in the shop waiting for his loving hand too.
He went right back at it as I went in to talk to his wife.

I didn't stay long, but looked around as the shop demands as it is the best equipped shop with after market items. It is plain old fun to simply look, I bought some things and bid them a "till next time" hug for Debbie and a manly hand shake for Ken, and rode away from Wheelers once again. I do hope to come back.

The Dragon was fun this time as I was a bit fresher and was hitting the corners quite a bit faster, I was dragging the pegs regularly and then hit the belly band (foot pegs mount to it) and decided I needed to calm down before I was hanging parts in a tree to. I was closing in on and getting caught behind a bunch of Hardleys and watching the fortune of chrome spray sparks as they cruised around the corners. I passed about 3 as they moved over a bit to allow me by and a bright blue Hardley was ahead about 50 yards and I saw lots sparks then the bike stood straight up, off the road and right into the bank at about 30 miles per hour. The rider went right over the bars, followed closely behind by the tail light. Which pummeled her (yes her) into the red dirt hill side. She had all the best gear, brain bucket, short sleeved leather jacket all embroidered with motorbikes and heathens. Her fingerless gloves looked so cool, her tats glistened with blood and she slid down the embankment back the the road side. The side of her face was quite adorned with bits of dirt, sticks, grass and blood. Her brain bucket did it's job and scooped a nice load of soil to help dry the excess blood as it sifted out of her bucket.

Not her,,, just a close call for this guy............!

The forks were bent, the windshield was destroyed, the side bag on the right side wouldn't hold much any longer. The tank was dented quite well. I was first to her and she was already crying and digging rocks from the cuts on her arms. Her (I believe) husband arrived and took over. I helped pick the bike up and all the Hardley people suggested I leave them (I was on a Suzuki after all, they knew I would never understand how family really is) So I bid them ado and rode off into the sunset. I came upon a couple more incidents which weren't bad, with sportbikes.

I rode straight through the Dragon and then the next 25 miles to 411 and made the left to Greenback, Tennessee. Where the guy I was going to visit lives. I stopped at a little store on a corner and was fiddling with my GPS and the directions which weren't correct. This old biker rode his Sportster trike which had some rust on every single part, even the mirrors were brown. I think it must have been a fashion statement, as he was chewing tobacco and spitting as he stood there telling me all about something. I acted like I knew exactly what he was saying, but I couldn't understand most of the words. He spoke perfect english when he cussed, although words like "to", sounded like teaow! It reminded me of Mel Tillis, unless he was singing his stuttering was awful, well this guy could cuss well.

I figgered the way out with some creating searches with my GPS and off I went in search of my buddies place. There are more motorbikes here than anyplace in America. My arm was beginning to ache from waving.

I found my new buddies place. The 1 mile road to his house was single lane with swaying corners and picture perfect homes along side of it's smooth white concrete, the street shared with about 6 more homes on 5 to 10 acre plots. His place was very nice with a attached garage and also a separate garage with stable for their 3 houses and his 4 bikes. The acres upon acres of grass in every direction was mowed and manicured to perfection. They welcomed me in and we reacquainted an amount, since I had only met him for about 20 minutes at a Wendy's the weekend prior. His wife wasn't very sure of me, and how could you blame her? Their home was absolutely beautiful, we sat in the kitchen and talked like we were starved for time and had so much to discuss. I really like this old guy and he liked me.

He was in WWII in the navy on a PT boat, an aircraft mechanic and worked hard to become a Captain of Eastern's 727 aircraft. 36 different aircraft he had flown. He had been through a fantastic life, and accomplished life as well. He could remember every name, every date and circumstances associated with every single story. His stories were fun, his life was wonderful to hear, he seemed to explode in his need to vent them. I loved each one. Both good times and bad he spun them with clarity and color, I asked him for more, when he realized he might be boring me. I was completely enthralled with him and his life with her. They had been married since 1942. They were so comfortable together it almost felt like they weren't friends at all, almost existing yet not in love, but after 2 days the crack of their love began to shine through the armored cracks of their relationship. She was an amazing horseman, teaching some of the most important people of the elite rich and even leaders of other countries how to ride with skill. He brought out books and newspaper articles of her riding Zebras and training people to ride them Argentina. She was as accomplished as he, but they held their fame close to their hearts, and released only because I was willing to listen. I still feel honored.

We finally went out to his garage and looked at his bikes. He had 4 pristine motorbikes. Each he had bought new and still owned them. He has a BMW 1992 K75, a 1983 R80RT, a 1990 MZ 600 sportbike, and a 2006 650 V-Strom. They all looked like they were brand new.
I didn't think to take pictures either. Go fig?

I spent the next day with him as well and we laughed as we talked, knowing I would never see him again, we got teary eyed as we both knew he wouldn't be here for long. He has Prostate cancer, and his prognosis isn't good. He slept better than he had in years with me there, his wife kiss my cheek and gave me like 3 hugs before I left. She had finally accepted me as honest and open, and being there for one thing, her husbands friendship. She whispered "Thank you for coming", I can't deny, I cried a bit, too.

He must have explained the routes from his home 15 times, drew me maps and explained the large barns and the fields of "broken down crap all the bums had" at each road I should take back to Atlanta. I wanted to ride the Cherohala, but didn't have enough time since I simply couldn't leave early enough. I rode to Tellico Plains which is the end of the Cherohala Skyway, and then decided to follow one of Bob's best directions. Highway 68 south, it turned into highway 575 in Georgia but it was an incredible road. The sweetest sweepers and high Blue Ridge gorgeous mountain views. The Appalachian Mountains are beautiful. Plus Highway 68/575 reduced the super slab down to 20 miles.

I was riding through Newtown, Tennessee and saw these two fellows taking each others picture but their stance was quite weird so as I was riding by I watched closely and realized there was a blue dotted line between their legs and the wide stance meant they were on some sort of line, so I turned around and took some pics myself.

I got back to Atlanta at 8:30pm and after getting back into the room it was 9:30 ish. I slept poorly all night as I couldn't stop thinking of Bob, Mary and the great time I had had.

Great trip report. We need more of these on here - reminded me of advrider. Tail of the Dragon is on my "must do" list and hoping to hit it once I rent a bike near my parents' house in Virginia.

Thanks for the great pics and report!

Thanks everyone.
I am having a great time and school is actually (I know it shouldn't be) the best I have been to in many years. So I am even on some level, enjoying school.

Jersey John, Specifically I did loads of research and renting for a weekend was (least expensive) like $280.00 to (most expensive) $350.00 for one weekend. I have owned this bike free and clear and it should end up costing me about 300 bucks for 30 days of riding.

There is the fact that it isn't perfect, but the bike is sweet, none the less.

I do wish everyone I know could spend time in this area on a motorbike, it is a religious experience. The people are my kind of gun toting, hard cussing, rightwing motorbiking people. What a country!

Time is getting short
The week of class was long and I had hit the wall with a lack of sleep and an evening of Mexican food including 3 margaritas with the guys. My stamina isn't as strong these days.

So I made it roughly through the class even woke up a few times and amazingly passed the tests totaling 100 questions.

The week included some hands on time with a few differing engines Delta puts on their 767's. 2 are "fly by wire" (controlled completely by a wire interface with no control cable attachments to them. So all functions (which are many) are decided by a computer, not a pilot. (The pilot is only asking the computer to "please go to full power,,,,,PLEASE?) There are also 2 cable controlled engines. 2 are Pratt & Whitney and 2 are GE engines. Air Force One is a cable controlled engine....HUM.....

The facility in Atlanta is impressive, with some of the largest operations I have ever seen. The hangers are incredible and the work lifts and stands almost made me wish to be here. The best access I have ever known existed since I have spent my 46 years fixin planes.

The flight simulator is loads of fun. We flew it and took it off and landed it too! Mainly it was for engine run procedures and emergency troubles while running.

Except when I acted like we crashed and we were all laughing, it was fun!!!!

This is one of my new found buddys, he is from Johannesburg, South Africa soon to be moving to Cape Town. He has invited my wife and I to come down and see the place......That is so exciting, it could happen.....His name is Reinier,,,,funny how it is spelled the same backwards?

The newer 777 is so cool and the 767 is a nice, although now becoming dated, aircraft. The design is usual Boeing. Some of the best thought out designs and doubly redundant safety included in so many systems. The amount of aircraft Delta and NWA (for those who don't know,,,they merged) have is like 800 airplanes of so many types.

I began my love of Boeing aircraft in 1974 when I was first introduced to the Boeing 707 and then the KC135 (almost the same A/C) and then became the flight mechanic for a long year of flying the South Pacific to places like Fiji, Christmas Island, Tarawa, and Guam. The 727 is an incredible plane, but can't hold a candle to more modern airplanes of Boeing.

Airbus, I like to refer to as ScareBus are not my idea of a well designed Aircraft. Actually I don't like them one bit. Part of it might be the connection to France and Germany, but after a short while of maintaining the A319's, A-320's and A-330's, I can unequivocally announce, I don't like Airbus.
I still solidly and proudly announce "if it ain't Boeing, I ain't going!"

And Delta has seemingly begun to move away from ScareBus and remain with Boeing, like Alaska Airlines has done.

But I digress, again.

I rode the public transportation train system across Atlanta Friday to the Atlanta Aquarium and it was incredible to witness public transportation since after 28 years in Alaska and not ever having used any, it does open ones eyes to it's possibilities.

I went with a Minneapolis based classmates family, he and another new friend from Johannesburg, which he is moving away from when he returns, to Cape town, some 900 miles away. His daughters were sweet, cute and made me smile every-time I saw them.

The aquarium is awesome, the best I have ever seen, the best I will ever need to see as it has fish 30 feet long and tons of weight in tanks of indescribable size, where I actually walked in a 70 foot long tunnel with a 30 foot long whale shark cruising above me, with 6 foot stingrays cruising by at eye level and every kind of fish and sea creature (except barracuda, didn't see one of these) I could think of.

The entire aquarium took 4 hours to walk through. It is huge! Here is the best part, there is a bar there, I bought a Jack Daniel and Coke and with a good tip he mixed it extra strong. Then proceeded to walk through the aquarium, yes it is OK to do so! What a country! I wish I had had another.

Even with crashing waves!

This is a 30 foot long HUGE Whale Shark. it was awesome!

Another side of the ENORMOUS tank.

Right after we left the aquarium we walked past the attraction of Coke as it's home office is here in Atlanta as well.

We walked about 10 blocks and found a Hooters and thought this will be the perfect place for a nice plate of wings! And some brew.......
But we never really expected this? Check out the woman behind me, she is not pleased with the little tart!

Here are the patrons excluding my little group for a shot and all of the girls working. It was interesting, I took the picture and got some special looks from a few. Even my group were a bit un-nerved by my bravado.

I was planning to ride the following morning, but things just felt wrong, I was tired, family phone calls and life caused my departure time to pass well beyond a reasonable time and I figured I would rather take a nap and read some, so I sat in my room and read a book. I slept and relaxed and that evening I thought I had best put my little Suzuki up for sale on Craigslist. For an anal retentive airplane mechanic this is easier said than done. But I spent about 2 hours building the sale with HTML language so it was worded perfectly and just as here told the story of the bikes life with me (for the 3 weeks I have owned it) and made the case as best as I could for another person to see it was a great deal. I asked $1500 for it and since I had paid $1600 and installed a clutch and oil changes it sounded like it should move quickly.
I finally posted it at 11PM and went to bed.

The following morning I received a response, to trade it for a worn out Chrysler LeBaron.......WTF? I had told in the ad the entire story of why I had bought it and rode it and was selling it. How did this moron miss that, so I answered OK I would meet him at the Target mall in an hour. And went to breakfast. when I got back I had the second and the last response to the add.

The second guy was looking at bikes and wanted to include it in his list of bikes to see that day. I said OK come on by and he did and as soon as he saw it he agreed to buy it. But not until Saturday as I wanted to keep Trudy until then he agreed and I am going to ride it to him in La Grange, Ga., south of here about 55 miles. He is excited and I am pleased it will be sold so easily. It is Monday and the week ahead is full of more and final schooling. But Trudy will take me to school and back everyday I am here, That is sweet for sure.

This last week will be on the 767-400 and more stuff to know. But the final look at the A/C will be at night when the international routed 767-400's return home for maintenance and we can get a look at them.

Then as near as I can predict I will have one maybe 2 days to relax awaiting the trip back to the beautiful part of the country. I guess you can guess I love Vancouver and Portland?

The Intruder is gone!
Sold her this morning.

The guy who bought her is 50ish and really fits the bike well.

I am a bit sad.

I will update the trip here on this thread very soon.
After all one more night of training, and it is HOME bound!!!

I am getting anxious to fly home.

Man Gusgus, that is some trip. I am just catching up on all the verbiage on the forum, and by far, this is the most interesting read. Plain awesome!
Buying a bike versus renting one also worked out really good. I’d do the same if I go that way…hope to share some cold ones with you and get more of your stories, I know there was much more to it!

Great write up, thank you so much for sharing !

I have a friend in Atlanta and he keeps inviting me down so I can ride the infamous Tail. This definitely makes me want to go sooner than later.

Some one I really respect told me once- always make time for people, you never know who you could meet and how they can effect your life or how you can affect theirs.

Cool stuff.
