Should a $250.00 Full Service on a bike include checking the brakes and topping off the brake fluid or not?

I got a DR650 from Chesapeake shortly after moving here with low rear brake fluid. It's got 10K on the clock so I took it to a local place called America's Motorsport for a full service and got it back with what amounts to an oil change, an overly tightened chain and (I hope) a valve adjustment. They told me their full service did not include checking the brakes (which might have 1K left on them) so since it's only a thumper, I'm thinking they flat out stole my money. The worst part is they are the only Suzuki dealer local to my area, so I have to deal with them again eventually.

NO! The brake reservior is sized to let you know when you are out of brake pad. They should absolutely not top it off.

They should however let you know the condition of your brake pads and let you make the decision to change them to new ones.

all three are easy to do. do the job yourself and save yourself the hassle.

Well the rear fluid was low (at MIN level) but the front was full. The pads front and rear have about 3/16ths left on them but they never said a word about it. I just put some MT90's on it and had the fluid changed and topped off so I hope it doesn't screw things up this next weekend when the new pads go on.

Grant I'd do it all myself but I don't have the tools or the patience for some of this stuff.

find the patience and buy the tools as you need them... they are all pretty simple jobs.

doing it yourself will connect you more with the bike, make you more confident for fixing stuff on the roadside, and chicks dig mechanically inclined guys.

It won't screw things up, except you will want to remove some fluid when you spread the calipers, so it doesn't make a mess. The idea is to be a tattle tale to let you know the amount of pad that is left-when your fluid is low, so is your pad life.

! Brake fluid is one fluid that does not usually need to be topped up as long as there is no leakage. Most of the reservoirs have some way to see the the fluid level w/o removing anything, if you include that in your pre-ride routine you will know if it begins to drop faster than the pads are wearing out.

Yeah, like anything else, when they need something! (That didn't sound bitter, did it? )
