Your bike came with a subframe and a rear fender from the factory, which you chopped off, so yes, you need a hugger.

I'd say that 80% of us with our mods aren't "by the book" or per the statutes and codes federal or otherwise.

I'm with Oly here. Kudo's on the personal expression. You will get all of the opinions you need from law enforcement and you may even pay for it. As long as you are okay with attracting thier attention, go for it. I do like the look of the super trapp or whatever silencer you have on the collector.

Looks cool, a hugger will not detract from the looks.

Don't ride it in Salem, officer Timmy will have you, full cavity search and maybe a chance to spend the night with BUBA.

First off, I dig your look ALOT more then I dig that horrible Eurotrash look where they turn the tail straight up. Personally? I'd want a hugger on there for the looks... and.. so I don't get run down by some guy after I put a rock through his window, or in the back of my head...

I'm pretty sure however that XLTman hit the nail on the head with 46.37.500

http://apps.leg.wa.gov/RCW/default.aspx?cite=46.37.500

Seriously though guy if you're going to go custom you should expect mixed reviews, who gives a crap what anyone thinks as long as you dig it.

Seems like everyone is getting hung up on the def of a motor vehicle..RCW 46.04.320 Motor Vehicle - Defined, which applies to cars and trucks. RCW 46.04.330 Motorcycle - Defined..provides the description for motorcycles..the two have separate legal definitions and by definition, a motorcycle is not a motor vehicle. The RCW for Mudflaps does not apply to motorcycles or motor driven cycles. It applies to Motor Vehicles. Somebody else said they got a handout from WSP that lists RCW's that apply to motorcycles that includes this one. If this is true, it's wrong. RCW chapter 46.37.---is the one that references motorcycles and while I havn't read every RCW in this subsection, a quick glance reveals that there doesn't appear to even be a requirement for motorcycles to have fenders at all..or a front brake or turn signals for that matter...easy

And tell your co-workers to worry about their day job before they start spouting off about their hobby..

bike looks sweet. i hate it when streetfighters have full sized tails, just looks wrong. i'd get a hugger cause i think it would look awesome, but i wouldn't think that would be the first thing a cop would write you up for.

Hey easy,

Next time you see a LEO city/county/state whatever ask them:

Is my "MOTOR-CYCLE" not considered a MOTOR VEHICLE? Does it not have a motor? Is it not a vehicle?? You are trying to split hairs here......but I was trying to save someone from getting railed everytime he rides his scoot. I will find it somewhere cause I have read it once...ANY REMOVAL OF SAFETY EQUIPMENT VIOLATES A FEDERAL STATUTE. It is not just a state issue it is FEDERAL.... GO ASK A LEO.

this is the reason i asked the question and listed the site for the rcw's. i dont understand why i would need one since motorcycles have their own section do not list anything about the fender in the motorcycle section. the rcw that everyone keeps listing is for motor vehicle (which they do not describe what it is). i would think that if a motorcycle is classed as a motor vehicle than the motorcycle section of the rcw would be obsolete .

Motorcycles are included in the overall definition of motor vehicles (they are a subset), and they also have their own, special, separate sections where the requirements are different. In general, the RCW will state that a motorcycle may have to follow a different section. Just because something isn't mentioned in the specific motorcycle section doesn't mean that there isn't a more general section that does apply to all motor vehicles.

my question is, is there actually a rcw to have a rear fender or hugger?
pic of my bike for a general reference:

rcw's and i did not find anything about the rear fender.

Have your "co-workers" put up or stfu.

Don't take their shit- they have the burden of proof- you don't.

They should have a RCW in mind -don't ask them- demand they provide documentation- I get sick and tired of these no nothing p.o.s.'s that pretend they know every RCW selectively to harass you.

Have fun with them...

I like Pointmans idea, tell them, "put up or shut up" prove my(your) bike is illegal.
Hopfully they wont do it Ticket style cause they work with you and have not written you yet. It might make them think about what a "normal" citizen faces trying to figure this shit out.

if it's not cover'd in the rcw's, then chances are it's in the fedral regs. (that's also where the 9" c-c turnsignals, 3 sq. in. surface area for turnsignals, etc... comes from: federal regs, not state)

I do remember reading one about the fender has to extend to the centerline of the axle... but dont remember if it was fed or state.
