getting crap from co-workers
okay so since i started my new job ive been getting crap from some of my coworkers that are local reserves for the police department. most recently since i cut the rear of my bike off they have been saying that i need a rear hugger on the bike now. when i asked where that is in the rcw since my bike never came from factory with one they diddnt really have an answer.

my question is, is there actually a rcw to have a rear fender or hugger?
pic of my bike for a general reference:

rcw's and i did not find anything about the rear fender.

I would think you would want one just for the "muck" factor of stuff coming up off the wheel onto your back

I can't see the picture for some reason, but your bike should have come with at the minimum a fender from the factory. Modifications are common, but few are legal.

I would ask them for clarification on what they mean.

I work with cops too....imagine that....and we all have a little type "A" personality in us. Don't take it to heart.

yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah i know about the exhaust one but, you know .

i read the splash aprons one but, i thought that was pertaining to all vehicals that werent motorcycles since motorcycles have their own set of rcw's. i mean who actually has a fender on their bike that goes to the center of the rear axle?

There is an RCW that says the rear tire of "any" vehicle must have a fender or flap that extends down to the center of the axle. It is not in the specific motor cycle section. I am not sure if the fact that many bikes fender do not go that low from the factory would help or not.
I have "heard a rumor" that some guys have been written for it. but I wonder if they actually got written up for having a smart mouth.
I know cops that say they can write anyone for something any time they want to. If you want I will find the RCW for you, let me know.

Legality aside, I think it would look better with a red hugger, and some sort of abbreviated tail section (not necessarily stock). You could still get that chopped or bobbed look, but it would look more finished.

Your bike comes from the factory with a rear inner fender and talipiece that not only holds the blinkers, but goes all the way to the center of the axle. I don't care if you removed it or not but it was there when the bike was imported and sold in the US, this was a OE part and was installed to follow FMVSS (FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARDS) now your bike is ILLEGAL....way ILLEGAL. Not to mention if you were riding in front of me and threw a rock up and chipped or broke my WS I would track you down and make you pay for it.....that is what the fender is there for.....SAFETY FOR OTHERS....NOT just for you.

One other thing you need to be aware of.....RCW 46.37.537 Motorcycles--Exhaust Systems:
(ver batim)..
No person shall modify the exhaust system of a a MC in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted be the engine of such vehicle above that emitted be the muffler originally installed on the vehicle, and it shall be UNLAWFUL for any person to operate a motorcycle not equipped as required by this section, or which has been amplified as prohibited by this section.

RCW 46.37.390

This RCW also clearly states in it about a noise limit of 95 decibels.........

I rec'd this paperwork straight from a local POPO after a stop.................just a FYI

With that exhaust, no mirrors, no reflector, and no legal signals (maybe you have an LED I can't see?) is it really only the hugger your worried about?

I think your bike looks more exotic like you have it, but I would sure hate to scoot back a little too far in the seat.

I was tempted to put one of those disk-only mufflers on my bike. I'm glad I didn't. But it IS a "muffler", and the sound is adjustable by the number of disks that are put in.

no?
fender mounts to the tail, hugger mounts to the swing arm right? i cut the tail section where the passenger seat, cargo area, and where the FENDER would be. the furthermost point of the rear subframe is only slightly higher (maybe 1") than the factory fender.

What does it weigh the way it sits? I think the bike looks very cool, I would add as as little as I could, maybe a the wheel hugger and close up the tail and add a fairly compliant plate/signal/reflector kit.

Don't ever throw your leg over that bike with any kind of beer not even Odouls on yo bref cuz you gunna git pulled over alot brutha.

It might be to center axle (or alot closer) when the suspension is compressed. I don't think a judge is going to let a BS against a stock Honda mudguard stand.

Your bike on the other hand is not evening trying to have a mud guard. Ride in the rain much?

You can expect to get lots of crap about your bike. It is part of being a custom. Don't be surprised if you get a ticket in WA.

Do you have ANY blinkers on there? I really hate doing all those hand signals.

starting this tread ive been looking at all the bike manufactures to see how many bike actually have a fender that goes to the lower center portion of the axle and they are few and far between with zero sport bikes, dual sports, motards or sport touring. why would that be? these are brand new factory bikes. the reason i point this out is to get back to my original question of do you actually need to have one and what is the rcw for it?

yeah i have blinkers, look at the "tail section" just behind my seat. im replacing those with shorty post blinkers and moving the others up front.

46.37.495 fenders or splash aprons.....

unless your bike is 40 years or older you are in violation

for what ShrekX said. Getting hit in the back from your own debris isn't cool. Unless you'd like a mud hawk on the back of your jacket...
