I wouldn't turn one down.

Since joining Ducati, what day of the week has he even seen a podium?

It would good next to a Bayliss and the old Bostrom.

Coolio!

I don't care for the looks of it either. But to act like he is an unaccomplished rider is complete stupidity. When have any of you been on ANY podium. Let alone MotoGP. Apparently Ducati is proud to have him. If I owned a race team I'd LOVE to have him race for my team. He WOULD make me money. Podium or not!

I'm sure most of us (myself included) think it's a nice bike. And I'm sure most of us (myself included) do not think Nicky has never accomplished anything worthwhile.

However, for Ducati (a team he 1) only recently joined, and 2) hasn't done anything for) to put out a limited edition bike in his honor is something many of us (myself included) don't understand.

To be honest I'm not a huge Hayden fan. Go Rossi,Go Haga!!!
But he seems like a nice all American kid.

To be honest I wish Nicky and Collin would go get a WSBK rides to compete with Spies. They are both more entertaining on Super Bikes.

However,

Nicky is a world champion.

as in...

FUCKING MOTORCYCLE RACING CHAMPION OF THE WHOLE FUCKING WORLD IN THE MOST OBSCENELY COMPETITIVE SERIES IN THE WHOLE FUCKING WORLD!!!!!!!!!!

I can't imagine the pressure.... Just to show up and qualify....

You guys should totally put an ONstar type system that automatically whines about the bike not being good enough when someone can't hang too. OR OR OR..

A Blue Flag light to get people to wave you past so you can win yourself a championship ;P

(And yes I realize the MSRP is 13995 and this is a very good deal if you're into that sort of thing)

Yes, the limited edition Nicky Hayden 848 will sell out, but that's because all limited edition Ducati motorcycles do. It has nothing to do with the fact that it's Nicky's bike. If the bike didn't have his name or number on it, it would still sell out quickly simply because it's a limited edition.

Personally, I think he's had plenty of time to do something this season. Everybody has.

I won't argue that Nicky is struggling to live up to expectations.

I'm sure even he would agree.

But to say he is a bad rider, or a rides like a "bitch" is ignorant.

The 990 was closer to the Superbikes in its masive power and rear wheel dynamics. The 880's reward 250/125 styles.

I can't stand it when armchair types tear down an amazing athlete.

Nicky sucks compared to what? the very very very best riders in the world? How many of them have world championships?

Lets see... Currently racing, Moto GP Open Class Champions OTHER than Nicky...

Uh, that one dude, you know, the goat (or close to it) ... #46

and that other dude #27.

Ducati Marlboro's Nicky Hayden will roll out for first practice at the Catalunya Grand Prix on a radically different Ducati Desmosedici GP09 in a bid to get out of the doldrums that have kept him in the bottom half of the field all season.

The Kentuckian has been well off the pace of teammate Casey Stoner, the World Championship leader, and nothing to this point has brought improvement. The team brought in a new crew chief at the previous race in Mugello, but to little affect.

The biggest problem, he said, comes from the rear. The rear shock starts to pump and then it transfers to the front.

"It's when the rear breaks grip and then it hooks a bit and then the electrics start working and it gets bigger and bigger," he said.

"People thought - me too - my style would work so good with this bike," Hayden said. "My style is really when I look loose on TV and sideways - it's more the tires moving. More for a dirt track background. Where this bike it's not the tire, it's more the twitchy chassis shaking. That's what's throwing me off. That's where I don't feel so loose or so nervous."

Now Hayden will try something he's never tried in a bid to revive his season and prove that Stoner isn't the only one who can ride the GP09.

"Yeah, I mean, it's certainly not easy to be in the back and last, but that's where we're at at the moment and just keep pushing," Hayden began. "That's all I know. That's what I was taught to do and that's all I know how to do. I just keep doing that.

"And, you know, Vito [Guareschi, the Ducati test riders] tried some stuff as far as geometry. And we've got one bike tomorrow, I'm not sure if it's exactly the right thing to do, but I've got nothing to lose. It's completely different. I think the only thing same on it's going to be the handle grips, because it's a lot of different position and stuff. Well, it's got a different electronic just setting - the way it works. And also the ride position is going to... you know I'm struggling a lot to get the bike to turn, so it's going to put me more on the front of the bike. With that, it's got a different wheelbase, different geometry to get the weight more on the front, so that changes a lot of things to get that."

Prior to Hayden's gathering with the media, Fiat Yamaha's Valentino Rossi complained about a lack of feel in the front end. Hayden said that wasn't his problem, that he could "feel the front, but I'm not getting it turned, especially in the long corners. I have to use the brake everywhere, stay on the brake, and when I get off the brake it runs wide."

And when he overlays his data with Stoner's, he lamented that the "speed's a lot different, unfortunately."

Hayden said he's constantly being told to be more aggressive.

" ‘You just got to be aggressive with this bike and do like Casey.' Around the lap, my throttle percentage wide open is more than him," Hayden said. "We come out of the corner and I get to wide open, not long before does, but a lot of places before him.

"One thing is that people think he's so aggressive... he just fights it and saws them bars. That's not the case. He's really smooth on it and with the throttle, especially - he knows how to control the pumping. Especially right before he gets to full throttle. He really works it and really has good feel for it. That's one of the biggest differences."

And, after a 5th place finish...

Jerez Test - Nicky Hayden
Nicky Hayden hasn’t had an easy time getting up to speed on his new Ducati this season.
Nicky Hayden has had a tough year thus far adapting to his new Ducati Desmosedici GP9 . A host of crashes and missed set-ups has kept the Kentucky Kid far from the podium all season. We caught up with the American fan favorite after the Red Bull U.S. GP at Laguna Seca over the 4th of July weekend to get his take on the season thus far. Though he didn’t land on the podium like he and many Americans hoped for, the middle Hayden brother did seem to find some light at the end of the tunnel at his home Grand Prix, battling up the ranks all weekend and finally finishing a strong fifth place - the highest American in the field.

MCUSA: Things seemed to have turned around for you some this weekend. Are you happy with fifth place?

HAYDEN: I’ve won here twice so I don’t want to sound like a fool being too happy with fifth place, but I’m pretty happy. This weekend I was 14th on Friday and the thought of that, running around here at my home race at the back of the pack not competitive, had me literally sick to my stomach that night. But we made some big changes Saturday, mainly to the electronics so it would run better and come off the corners a lot better, and from there just picked up some every session.

Toni Elias - MotoGP Laguna Seca
Hayden had his hands full with Toni Elias for fifth place come race time.
MCUSA: How was the race from your point of view?

HAYDEN: In the race I was able to get a decent start. I really wish I could have got by Toni (Elias) and get with that next group, the front group, right away. I think I could have kept them in sight some, they weren’t that much faster than me, especially (Casey) Stoner after that middle part. I mean it was my best qualifying, my best race all season, so I’m happy.

A little bit of my problem is the start of the race. I haven’t had the confidence to really hang it out right away and this was much better. I’ve got done maybe five or six 1:22s all weekend and in the race I had no choice – Toni was on me and wouldn’t let me get away. I basically ran what I
Hayden had a rough start to his Ducati career with a sickening highside in qualifying and running into the gravel trap on Monday. MotoGP - Losail
No doubt Hayden worked hard for his first top-five finish of the season.
qualified at for 32 laps so I was about at my limit.

I had the ‘fuel-con’ light come on at Lap 7 or so, which basically tells you to slow down, and I’ve only ever had it come on a little bit before. But it was staying on and staying on and if it stays on eventually I think it means you are not going to finish the race if you don’t slow down, but I couldn’t slow down! So I just kept pushing and finally with about eight laps (to go) it went off and so I was able to hang in there and get a top-five.

I feel like we are really slowly making some progress and fell good on the bike. I think we found something with the (crew) guys on electronics and settings and how the bike feels. I just really hope we can keep going from here.

MCUSA: Do you think this was a one-off miracle because it’s your home track or are you finally enjoying riding this bike?
HAYDEN: Just let me enjoy it (laughs). I don’t know – we’ll see. I don’t think it’s a miracle, we’ve made some progress the last few weeks. Sure this track helped, I’ve always done well here. Even the last two years when I didn’t win I qualified on the front row and the year before I was on the front row. Maybe a little of both. I felt like I really rode the bike this time as well! Really, the closer I get (to the front) and the faster I go the easier and more comfortable it is. When I’m two seconds off the pace that’s when I feel like I’m riding it way too hard.

Nicky Hayden - MotoGP Laguna Seca
A lack a acceleration plagued the Ducati team early in the weekend at laguna Seca.
MCUSA: Early in the weekend you had complained about a lack of acceleration, did you get this fixed?

HAYDEN: It wasn’t really even a problem it was just something off in the settings. I know it kind of sounds odd that we are always talking about settings and such at a motorcycle race, but yeah they just changed where the traction control runs and such to improve how it got off the corners.

MCUSA: You’ve made some radical changes to the bike the previous couple rounds, did you continue on that path this weekend or go back to where you started?

HAYDEN: No, I talked to Vito (Guareschi, Ducati’s MotoGP test rider) last night. I have a close relationship with him and he’s been testing some more stuff to help me. As far as the general riding position which we had changed quite a bit by raising the seat, we actually went another bit up this week. But this week we made the biggest improvement in electronics. We had something not working right there. I mean, Casey followed me at the Barcelona test when I was struggling and said, ‘hey, the only place that I’m making up time is off the corners’. Ya know, maybe he was a little bit quicker here or there but he said we needed to change how we were getting the power down.

MCUSA: The next round at Sachsenring in Germany has always been a good track for you, right?

HAYDEN: Yeah, I think I’ve been on the podium there every year except my rookie year and that year I was running fourth until the last corner when Loris (Capirossi) passed me. I like Sachsenring a lot.

MCUSA: Tell us about the special paint job you were running this weekend?
Nicky Hayden - MotoGP Laguna Seca
The Kentucky Kid rocked a special paint scheme and leathers for the U.S. GP, which was based off the Nicky Hayden-replica Ducati 848 that will be for sale in limited numbers in the United States.

HAYDEN: Here in America they introduced a signature series of that bike, making 100 Ducati 848s that look just like that bike, so that made it cool. It is one thing to just do special graphics, which is nice, but that one really had some meaning behind it.

MCUSA: Finally, how would you compare riding the Ducati GP9 to your previous Honda RCVs around here at Laguna Seca?

HAYDEN: This is not an easy bike to ride. 32 laps around here on this is a little different than that Honda 990 I had. I mean, that thing was pretty good. I don’t want to say that was easy, but that bike was good. That first year I think we just put fuel in that thing and went. But that’s stuff that only happens once in your lifetime, ya know – fastest in every session, pole, lead every lap, fastest every lap, all that. But that second year (that I won) was one of the hardest races of my life. Not only was it so hot, but I really don’t know how I won that year. I qualified sixth and was at the back all weekend so that was a lot harder than the first year. But this was a hard race and the bike’s certainly not easy to ride and the pace, I did what I did in qualifying for basically 45 minutes, so I was on my limit.

Nicky has made NO excuses for his performance so far. I've heard him say a couple times that its him and not the bike. I think he's a pretty stand up dude. most riders would blame the bike or other problems. I'm still a Rossi fan.

How is truth ignorant? The one championship Nicki (spelled like a woman on purpose) won was given to him by Honda. It wasn't even actually his, it belonged to Honda. There was no way they were going to let him loose that year.

Sure he is a nice kid, but he does not belong in that class. He came off one of the best bikes in the paddock, onto one of the others and still can't make anything happen. He isn't even mid pack on a full factory team.

This discussion is about Nicki, not the guys buying his companies streetbikes, paying his salary to be slower than most other guys on lesser equipment.

I think that bike is sick as hell and would be happy to ride it.

Now, I'll readily acknowledge that he's struggling, and it may well be that he might turn out to be a one year, "flash-in-the-pan" and time will tell.

That said, speaking of ignorance, what you posted above (bold font) has to be the most ill-informed, or downright IGNORANT things I've ever read on PNW. That year, he was consistently given the task of testing, and treated second class to Pedrobot. If that wasn't bad enough, the 2nd to last race in Portugal, his, uh...."teammate" pulls an unbelievably stupid move & crashes them both out. He hurt his shoulder pretty badly, and was in significant pain the entire last race, yet was able finish high enough to secure the championship. This only came out later...he had surgery shortly after the race. No one handed him anything, and to imply otherwise is laughable.

Anyone on any Honda is treated like that compared to Pedrosa. Nicky couldn't even beat Dovi on his B team Honda last year. I just speak about obvious facts.

Rossi had to give a championship away just for Nicky to have one.

Opinions do not equal facts. Rossi doesn't give anything away to anyone. C'mon, keep typing so you can confirm just how ignorant you are.....

And for the record, I'm not the #1 Hayden fan, rather I admire what it takes in talent, fortitude to compete at that level. I was there at Laguna in '06, and his performance that day was AMAZING. Flash-in-the-pan....or not, he deserves respect for making it as far as he did.

Why do you have such a hard-on for him anyway??

Honda was not going to let him loose?
Have you ever ridden a motorcycle?
How EXACTLY did honda win that champoinship?

And to say that the Ducati is one of the best bikes?
Dude, the Ducati sucks.
The only rider to ever consistant results is #27.

Nicky is a World Champion.

Nobody gave it to him.

He took it. When the pressure was on, he stepped up, Rossi blinked and the rest is history.

Go back to the armchair and keep drinking the Kool aide.
