Great Escape and more...
Actually, McQueen did NOT do the stunts. He wanted to, and could have, but the studio wouldn't allow it - he was worth too much undamaged. Ekins did the fence jump.

And, I grew up in the late 50s and early 60s, in Berzerkley. It WAS worth all it's reputation. And old bikes were more fun than the new ones, although not as reliable (but what was?). Remember, it was 50 years ago! You had to be involved with your bike, otherwise you were likely to spend a lot of time sitting by the side of the road. No appliance bikes.

I was fortunate to be there. Great times ...

Actually, according to IMDB, McQueen did all of the riding except the jump. He attempted it, but the actual 60-foot jump was performed by his friend, Bud Ekins.

I just watched Easy Rider on demand (its free!) and I gotta say I don't really get it. Ive done my share of experimentation but I never once thought anyone wanted to sit through a multimedia recap of my drug induced ramblings for 85 minutes.

I guess you had to be there huh. Its funny though how much standards of film-making and editing and stuff have changed since then - It all feels really patched together and low budget, almost like they were "writing" it at the same time they were filming it.

Jack Nickelson's character is the best by far, the other 2 are just kinda greasy manequins. Too bad rednecks hate motorcycles I guess.
I couldnt agree more...the movie was a trip, and I totally felt a little lost watching it. It was still good, but I felt like it was really choppy and I totally didnt get it (at least what I was supposed to get out of it) I just walked away saying "hmmm that was interesting...liked the bikes, and scenery" but the guys getting shot by rednecks at the end just seemed a little like WTF?? I'll have to check out "The great Escape" next!

Steve was a decent off road amateur, but he DID NOT do the fence jump.

Stunt man, multiple off road race winner and all around fast guy Bud Ekins (RIP) jumped the brit twin dressed up like a BMW. I think it was a triumph, but I can't remember....

The movie was supposed to make a cultural statement about 1969 US and the south in particular. I'm surprised that Viet Nam is NOT more prevelent...

the squares vs, the hip.

Note the kind treatment of the starving hippie commune, the farmer, the drunk civil liberties attorney (played by nicholson).

The civil rights battle had only recently been started.

Its an iconic movie, and has surprising lasting power when you consider the budget, quality etc..

Triumph.

RE: Easy Rider. I have it here at my motel and show it a couple of times a summer. It's extremely fresh and relevant despite the passage of time. Dennis Hopper's direction would garner praise even today with the advancements of technology. The acid scene in Lafayette Cemetery comes to mind as a particuarly cool music video even if it was done today. The social issues are still in place, with a thin, thin veneer of civility to show for the passage of time.

I have it in the film library along with other classics like "The Great Esacpe", "On Any Sunday", "From Dust to Glory" and of course any and all Isle of Man TT videos (heh. classic in their own way).

You had to be there. In many parts of the country in 1969, you could get beat up or killed for having long hair, smoking dope, being queer, being a hippie, being black and looking at a white girl or, heaven forbid, having one at your hip. Cities were being burnt to the ground over racial and anti-war tensions (MLK shooting and general white cop abuse against minorities or hippie draft dodgers).

To fully appreciate the movie, get the DVD with additional dialog and listen to Peter Fonda talk about how they made the movie (on his dad's credit card!) and what it meant to him and Dennis. It was a movie from the heart and it shows. It was also of the time (with my long hair in the early 70s I got run out of more than a few bars and towns, it was not a good time to have long hair and flaunt the Cpt. America theme), where the issues of the day weren't so complicated.

Great soundtrack, too!

In honor of the original movie; and in light of Harley Davidson Closing Buell, and with the recent South Park episode about "FAGS". I give you my latest version of Born to be wild Classic..... best sung with the Cartman voice in your head.

Got their motors running
Should be out on the highway
Instead of swarming like vultures
Hangin out at *bucks, cloggin the doorway

Yeah, damnit
Gonna make them go away
Take their loud pipes, stupid bikes
Fake stencil tatto’d guns at once and
Kick them out of this place

They like smoke and leather
Heavy metal thunder
Assless pants with fringe
And the feeling that they're ‘better’

Yeah, damnit
Gonna make them go away
Take a bucket of extra crispy
Fire off my buns at once and
Explode on their seats.

Like a true pompous Fag
They arent even gay
Born at fourty and faggy
They have rode town for the last time
Never want them back again
Born to be Fags
Born to be Faggoty

eh, I own a couple, if you cant laugh at it, you take yourself too seriously anyways.

Haven't watch it yet either....
...b/c it seems dated. But all this talk, sounds like its a motorcycle right of passage.

Can I be a real rider if I don't watch it?

Its super fresh even today. Of course you can be a rider, but I'd be surprised if you watched it and didn't see some kinship with the issues. No matter what your age and background are. Highly recommended.

Wow that trailer for a sequeal looks interesting...I dont know exactly how I feel about that one though... The movie as I mentioned above was a trip to me, definitely something that I couldnt completely understand upon first experience mainly due to my age. However, after reading through this post, and talking with my Dad about it a little as well, hell even my recent trip to Hawaii where I rented a Harley and rode the island w/o a lid for two days (shameless plug to my Hawaii thread with pics here) I have a whole different perspective of this movie...I think I need to watch it again.

I seen Easy Rider for the first time in Viet Nam on an open air screen during one of our stand-downs. And yes, I was high!! After all, it was the rear area and that was what we were there for, to unwind.

No, but it is on my wish list for DVD's/BluRay's.

From Executive Producer Quentin Tarantino (Grindhouse Presents: Death Proof) and Writer/Director Larry Bishop (Mad Dog Time) comes this lean, mean mayhem machine - fully loaded with bikers, babes, and booze. Michael Madsen (Kill Bill Vol. 1 & 2), Eric Balfour (TV's 24) and legendary "Easy Rider" Dennis Hopper are part of a wild motorcycle gang bent on avenging the death of one of their own. With Vinnie Jones (The Condemned) as the crazed arrow-wielding rival gang leader, Hell Ride is a savagely enjoyable good-time where the women are hot, the bikes are even hotter, and the action never stops!

This was also a time before industrial globalization, free trade and NAFTA starting gutting family-wage jobs wholesale across the country...the exception being the decline of the steel industry in PA and likely some other notable examples, but for the most part people were growing up with a sense of hope and optimism, and still had the idea your life could be better than that of your parents. We didn't suffer without computers, blackberries (except the ones we picked at the side of the roads, and went home and made turnovers with), electronic calculators, cell phones...in fact I think people today are SO much more tied to their jobs due to these devices, I think they suffer far more stress by having them, than not.

As to motorcycles, they may have not been as knife-edged, powerful and competent as today, but I'm grateful for that as well. I cannot imagine starting out on something like a 600cc supersport. AFAIK there was no MSF, no classes, nor mentors, you just jumped on a bike and either survived and thrived, or didn't. For me discovering the RD350 in Germany, in 1977 opened a whole new chapter in my life still being written. I remember not knowing anything about street riding, and strafing canyon roads like Rodalbestrasse outside of Pirmasens, scraping the undercarriage 'til I almost crashed, scaring the sh*t out of myself and then laughing about it 5 minutes later. That's the magic of youth, the lack of fear @ age 19. The RD350 was one of the very few well-handling bikes available in the 70's era, and as anyone can see from my list to the left, I've never lost my love for the things.

As to being a woman rider, people think today it's still somewhat of a novelty to see them? Back then, it would be YEARS before I saw another woman rider, except on the back. It made for a great way to meet guys, especially the cute blond-haired native ones, since most of the guys I served with were too busy getting drunk, lamenting the fact they weren't back in "the world" (U.S.) and I found it much more interesting to see the countryside from an RD @ 8000 rpm.

While getting older isn't necessarily for the faint of heart, especially when health complications start to manifest themselves, I am happy to have lived through what I feel was the "golden age" of optimism and wealth in the U.S., and would be horrified to be growing up with the world young people are inheriting now....so I'm happy to be 51 now instead of 18!
marry me

It's made by Larry Bishop, who used to be in 60's biker flicks- it's a Tarantino inspired movie.

I liked it and I "got it" even though some said it was vague...you have to know the genre of biker flicks to appreciate it.....helluva cast there too..
