Disclaimer: I didn't see anything like this, hopefully it's not a rehash of an old thread. Good riding gear can get fairly expensive. The subject of what to buy and how much to expect to spend came up with a friend of mine who is about to take the MSF course and start bike shopping, and I started thinking about how much I've spent. It never really seems like that much when you're buying it piece by piece, but I came to the conclusion that on any given ride, I'm probably cruising around in something like $1800 worth of protective gear. Granted, I saved up for a while and went a little overboard, but the point remains that riding isn't a cheap endeavor. However, dragging knee beats the hell out of Armani. Maybe I'm just cheap, or maybe I went way over the top with my gear. How about the rest of you? Last edited by Snarl; 12-03-2009 at 09:16 PM.. Reason: I'm an idiot, didn't count the helmet. |

Arai's Profile helmet is the only one that fits me right, and I've got all Dainese gear. So, my helmet is over $400 (retails around $500), gloves are $300, boots are $300, and my one-piece is a little over $2000. Yup, this chit's not cheap! ... or is it that we shouldn't be cheap with this chit? |

| I bathe with candles, flowers, jazz music, and rubber ducky. | Depends on what I wear. Lately: Ski pants: $50'ish they're el-cheapo and not protective, but they are warm Jeans or slacks: $50 Thermals: $30 Boots: $250 Gloves: $125 Helmet: $150 Two or so sweaters or a hoodie: $30'ish I guess (goodwill prices LOL) Jacket (shell): $75'ish I guess Scarf: $20 So for my inadequate, lame winter get-up: I guess a little less than $800 for new pricing. At the track or on fast street rides I wear my Daineses and better gloves.... Two piece leathers: $1400 Helmet: $150 Gloves: $150 Boots: $250 Boxers: $15 Jersey: $30 A big smile So... smidge under $2000 I guess. |

![]() ![]() | Do you want the price of the gear the day we bought it? Or the price of the gear if today we sold it? My Vanson Leathers I'm sure have depreciated compared to what I spent on them (sigh). |

BTW, I took a couple of rides this summer in flip-flops and shorts. Yet, I was still wearing over $500 in the helmet and light-weight gloves. I guess that's as cheap as it comes, for meh. |

And yeah, there were a few days last summer that I managed to get out in shorts and flip flops and t shirt. I showed up to bike night once in my pajamas. And on Halloween I didn't wear gear, I wore a costume. | |

After researching everything under the sun I settled on Dainese, AGV, and A-Stars. Buying from MotoCorsa, Cycle Gear, and E-bay and using the Team Oregon coupons I spent $2,500 easy. Half the purchase price of my bike. I love my gear though. And, it's actually comfortable at this point. |
