I Ride: '08 GSX-R600
How much $ are you "wearing" when you ride?
Disclaimer: I didn't see anything like this, hopefully it's not a rehash of an old thread.

Good riding gear can get fairly expensive. The subject of what to buy and how much to expect to spend came up with a friend of mine who is about to take the MSF course and start bike shopping, and I started thinking about how much I've spent. It never really seems like that much when you're buying it piece by piece, but I came to the conclusion that on any given ride, I'm probably cruising around in something like $1800 worth of protective gear. Granted, I saved up for a while and went a little overboard, but the point remains that riding isn't a cheap endeavor. However, dragging knee beats the hell out of Armani.

Maybe I'm just cheap, or maybe I went way over the top with my gear. How about the rest of you?

When I can fit into my one-piece, I'll be wearing in excess of $3000. Arai's Profile helmet is the only one that fits me right, and I've got all Dainese gear. So, my helmet is over $400 (retails around $500), gloves are $300, boots are $300, and my one-piece is a little over $2000.

Yup, this chit's not cheap! ... or is it that we shouldn't be cheap with this chit?

, having crash-tested more than I care to some of the more "affordable" brands (Scorpion, Frank Thomas, etc.) vs. "expensive" (i.e., DAINESE), all I'm going to say is that it's money very well spent.
that said, basically every "affordable" brand makes GP-level suits and such that are pretty damn good quality..

I Ride: year 'round
Depends on what I wear. Lately:

Ski pants: $50'ish they're el-cheapo and not protective, but they are warm
Jeans or slacks: $50
Thermals: $30
Boots: $250
Gloves: $125
Helmet: $150
Two or so sweaters or a hoodie: $30'ish I guess (goodwill prices LOL)
Jacket (shell): $75'ish I guess
Scarf: $20

So for my inadequate, lame winter get-up: I guess a little less than $800 for new pricing.

At the track or on fast street rides I wear my Daineses and better gloves....

Two piece leathers: $1400
Helmet: $150
Gloves: $150
Boots: $250
Boxers: $15
Jersey: $30
A big smile

So... smidge under $2000 I guess.

my "leathers":
jacket: $60 (a*, used)
gloves: ~$100? (joe rocket, new)
pants: $free.99 (dainese)

my textiles:
pants: ~$200 (tour master, new)
jacket: ~$160 (tour master, new)
gloves: $30 (first gear maybe?, new)

my boots: $200 (a*, new)

I Ride: because I don't want to jump out of airplanes.
Mostly depends on what fits you and how much protection/functionality you want out of it. I spent more than I probably should have. I can't remember exact amounts but here is about what I spent.

full face helmet - $600 (tinted visor to switch out clear one $60)
half helmet - $100
leather jacket with zipper vents - $300
heavy textile jacket with liner and zipper vents- $450
lightweight jacket with zipper vents & pads - $180
reflective rain jacket cover - $60
leather boots - $150
full fingered leather summer gloves (has 'breather' holes) - $50
fingerless leather gloves with palm padding- $35
mildly cold/wet weather gloves - $50
rain pants - $60
cold weather pants with pads and heat resistant patches on legs - $180
warm, fuzzy, neck/face cover - $10
rags for me head to keep sweat off my helmets (I got about 6) - $50/$60
jeans - $30

I'm probably not done either...

Do you want the price of the gear the day we bought it? Or the price of the gear if today we sold it? My Vanson Leathers I'm sure have depreciated compared to what I spent on them (sigh).

I thought he was just talking about gear... unless you feel that underwear is protection against skid marks.

BTW, I took a couple of rides this summer in flip-flops and shorts. Yet, I was still wearing over $500 in the helmet and light-weight gloves. I guess that's as cheap as it comes, for meh.

I just wanted people to know how much I spend on my underwear.

And yeah, there were a few days last summer that I managed to get out in shorts and flip flops and t shirt. I showed up to bike night once in my pajamas. And on Halloween I didn't wear gear, I wore a costume.

Me - new old stock, all the way.

125 - KBC VR2 Gun Duo
99 - Teknic Lightning Leather Jacket
99 - Belstaff Merlin Textile Touring Jacket
125 - RevIt Freestyle Boots
59 - Teknic Supervent Mesh Jacket
39 - Teknic Aquavent Textile Pants
15 - Teknic Chicane Gloves
10 - Some snowboarding gloves from Costco

While I'd like to buy gear costing MUCH more, I managed to find a local vendor that has a stockpile of new gear that's VERY well priced, bringing my running total to:

$571

And that's if I wore 3 jackets and 2 pairs of gloves at once. LOL.

Last trip to the ER cost was minimized by wearing full gear. It was still more expensive and painfull than spending money on gear on the expensive side of the scale.

$500 helmet

= $1100 or so.

Wow... I hadn't really thought about this before. Interesting topic.

I got caught up in the whole 'Spend as much as you can Afford' thing. After researching everything under the sun I settled on Dainese, AGV, and A-Stars. Buying from MotoCorsa, Cycle Gear, and E-bay and using the Team Oregon coupons I spent $2,500 easy. Half the purchase price of my bike. I love my gear though. And, it's actually comfortable at this point.

Anyhow...approximate prices, to the best of my shitty memory:

or

or
Daytona Lady Star boots ($350)

Teknik Back protector (so old I can't remember what I paid for it about $100?)
or
"free" back protector provided with leathers purchase

Arai Helmet - about $400

Grand total:
$1700 on the street
$2800 on the track or the street on hot days

Boots - 120 (Tour master)

So about 600
