it's RF and just has a lil plug (like the Nike+) that goes in the dock connector.

says it will work with all ipods/iphones...I know that it works with my 4th gen ipod nano and iphone 3g. They says its pretty waterproof but being under the double bubble helps as well, not that I plan to ride in rain. $20bucks shipped I think off amazon...

but wouldn't you rather have volume control, and pause/play as well??? just way easier and simple to control your ipod.

I think I'm too stubborn to spend $20 to do it the easy way. I've gotten pretty used to poking buttons through layers of leather

Did you get the headset that just has the stereo earphones? Every other helmet com system I've seen comes with a volume control. Sure you have to reach up to the helmet, but that's not too bad. If you just got the speakers, I'll concur that's a nifty gadget you found. Can't really control the volume easily through a pocket.

My old iPod video is dying. I'm debating going nuts with an iPhone and a bluetooth helmet rig. It'll probably cost upwards of $400 by the time I'm done, but it'd be as simple as putting on the helmet and the phone in a pocket. Right now I only use my cheapie rig for real long rides because it's too much trouble for short ones and I'd rather not have the extra noise when riding in town.

Dang, that's cool. I may just get that. I like that it's RF. Means that if you have an oopsie your ears won't get removed from your helmet.

Heh, i have an ipod nano. Good luck trying to hit those buttons with gloves on.

I just made a playlist of songs that would be appropriate riding a motorcycle and that even if I wasn't in the mood for them they wouldn't have me grating my teeth wanting to fast forward.

But be nice to be able to skip songs and it owuld be nice to be able to lower volume if I need to.

The ipod nano would be better for long rides, no worries about batteries dieing (I've used mine on a weekend motorcycle trip and never had to recharge the battery the whole time. It was pushing it some). I've also accidentally forgot to have it stop playing, picked it up the next day, and it still had juice to play music.

Not sure how long the iphone would last just to use it as an ipod, but since it's my phone too as well as mobile internet connection and I have an ipod, I use the ipod for playing music on my bike as battery power is not an issue with my nano at all (plus it is smaller and easier to fit anywhere I want it to).

You can save on power by sticking it in airplane mode while riding (this turns off the 3G and Phone parts of the iPhone so it isn't trying to update anything). Once the screen is off it uses little power. It won't last as long as the miserly nano, but it should last at least two days like that. Longer if it's the 3G.

Well, the iPhone would largely be about convincing myself to actually carry a phone with me on a regular basis. I have a cell, but it usually sits on my dresser in the charger unless I'm going on a road trip, and even then it's off until I feel like checking in. The cell I've got even has a basic music player, but it's a major pain to set up playlists and such. I think having one gadget that does both jobs (and a lot of other fun stuff) might be enough to make me act like an adult and wear an electronic leash finally.

The other big draw for me would be not having a wire from the helmet to the player to fuss with. My current helmet speakers have the wire glued in from trying to take off my bucket without unplugging it first.

My video used to run forever if I put it on random and didn't mess with it, but now it can't even seem to make it through an 8hr shift at work. And it craps out if you try to play video without plugging it in first. And oddly enough, something inside rattles sometimes. Not all the time, and not necessarily when it's acting strange. No clue what that's about. The thing's about 5 years old now and been ridden with, dropped, played for hours on end and all manner of other abuse, so it's served it's time.

To bad you are so far north. I know a guy down in Clackamas who can fix your iPod for cheap. From the sounds of it your battery is dying and your HD is starting to wear as well.

You can get an iPhone used for less than a new iPod Touch ($200-$300). You will still have the wire from helmet to device, but the beauty of the setup shown in this thread is that it places the volume/music controls in a place that is easy to reach and use.

There are setups like those pictured HERE that have a plug that fits in at the base of your helmet so you can plug/unplug your headset at the same time as fastening/unfastening your helmet.

Did everyone with an Ipod forget that it's illegal to wear headphones while operating a vehicle? It's been that way since the 80's, back when the walkman became popular. Don't know what the fine is or what they specifically cite you for but, I know the cops don't like it when they pull you over. Their reasoning is that you can't hear emergency vehicles coming up on you and whatever else but, it's a distraction anyway. Kinda talkin on a cell phone while driving, right?

Not trying to thread jack. I just see it all the time and wonder?

I have been pulled over while wearing my earbuds and was told by the cop himself its ok to wear 1 earbud but 2 is illegal. I have been wearing mine for years without a problem, But then I also have illegal licence plate mountings, mufflers for track use only, removed o2 sencers, wear a dark visor after dark, and occasionally go 5 miles over the posted speed limit

I have been using this with my Touch for about a year. It was cheaper last year. I absolutely love it. I velcro'd the remote on my triple and it works flawlessly.

So if you have SPEAKERS in your helmet, you are OK? 'Cause if that's illegal, then speakers in a car should be too!

That's why I use hacked up headphones hidden inside the cheekpads. They don't block sound, only add it. So they should be ok. Any leos know?

I have the monster remote. It works well, but sometimes it will skip to a totally different playlist when I only hit the skip button once. I've used it while running and snowboarding too. It's pretty decent, for that price I would definately get one.

So how does it also connect to your scala wirelessly? Or did you run wires to the scala?

I have a chatterbox xbi that I plan to hook up to my ipod with a bluetooth adapter (on the ipod). But I can't have two things on the dock connect on the ipod.

I've been pulled over with head-phones in. The worst part was getting them off in time to hear the officer. I get pulled over, my iPod is deep in my pocket still loud and a cop wants to talk to me. He didn't say a thing about it.

I have a wire from my chest pocket to my helmet for the ipod and then my iphone connects bluetooth (not that I really wanna take a phone call while riding but could).

Hey, this isn't my personal crusade or anything? I was just wondering? It seemed like this kind of thing would be comparable to the current hot-button issue of driving and talking on a cell. Distracted driving/riding is a very real concern but, if LEO's don't say anything about it during a traffic stop, I am pretty surprised.

Can't you listen to music while in a car? What not on a bike? Seems perfectly fitting to me. And I don't think they can say anything to you about it if you are using helmet speakers. Headphones are another story I believe

I just don't see how it's any different than wearing earplugs. With earplugs, I can hear things like emergency vehicle sirens much better over wind noise and exhaust noise. It must have something to do with a certain pitch that wind noise produces and the earplugs eliminate. Not to mention it saves my hearing so I'm not inadvertently yelling at the officer because wind noise has made me deaf.

So, if you look at it that way, it's pretty much the same as listening to a CD in your car. A person CAN have it up so loud that they can't hear emergency vehicles , but they're not SUPPOSED to and it's dangerous, but no different.

BUT ANYWAY, as far as iPod and head phone stuff goes: Helmet speakers, IMO, do MORE damage to your ears because they have to compete with wind noise. The trick is to find some earbud headphones that won't jumble around when you slip your helmet on. You have to get ones that are thin and small. Currently I use the 2nd gen iPod Shuffle mounted to the left side (clutch side) of my helmet. The 2nd gen iPod shuffle is really easy to use with gloves and, if it's attached to your helmet, MUCH less of a distraction as trying to dig around in a pocket or fumble with a handlebar or tank mounted setup. You can keep your eyes on the ROAD!!! I went through several pairs of earbuds before finally finding ones that fit comfortably inside my helmet: Sony EX Earbuds (Model: MDREX56LP). Got em at best buy. They're comfortable, thin, and , surprisingly, pack a punch with the underpowered iPod shuffle. The best part: Out of all the earbuds i've tried, including Altec Lansing, they are the cheapest! At $20.00 ya can't beat it!

How did you mount your ipod to your helmet? Velcro? I kinda like that idea. Do you have any pics of it?
