Discussions of 50cc bikes
The tiny dirt bike type.
Going to buy my son a bike here shortly. Was set on the honda until i saw the yami in the store, its a few bills cheaper and has electric start.

Anyone with experience care to lend some insight.

Both get good reviews, and I am NOT brand loyal(used to ride Suzuki's and currently ride a yami)

I am a bit green on dirt bikes, as i've only ridden street. But my son loves him some dirt bikes.

I'm sure he wont care either way. Both are good machines. Get which ever you get a better deal on.

I got my son a 2004 PW50 when he was 6. Awesome little bike! Perfect for him to learn on too. I have always done all the maintenance myself and have NEVER had any major problems with it. Kid's 10 now and still loves to ride that bike, even tho he has a bigger one. I will always reccommend the PW50 for anyone looking for a kids bike

From what I understand you're not supposed to lick or chew on any part of them.

That could explain some serious problems I've been having.

Well when I was 7 I started out on a PW50 and I loved it....Butttt I think the crf 50 is a better bike. You dont have to shift the Pdub just twist and go,But I outgrew that thing fast.It was not quick enough.I got a little 70 quad ''the kind you shift but dont have a clutch''It took a bit before I learned how to shift but once I did I loved the thing.I guess what I am trying to say is it will probably take him a lot longer to outgrow the crf.Once he is ready for a new bike go buy some big bars and suspension and now you have yourself a new toy

Check craigs list before you buy new. They will out grow it fast and no reason to waste gobs of money on it. As for what brand I'm Honda bias. I have a metropolitan and the 50cc that's in that is the same used in the dirt bikes. Mine has a electric start and a back up kick starter.

on Craigslist... If you absolutely must buy new check out Kawi's as well... they are typically a few bills cheaper when comparing each class of street bike...

How old is your kid? What kind of ridding do you want them to do (just your yard or trails etc..) All the 50cc bikes are = but kids out grow them real fast and there are other bikes that are still automatics but a little bigger and have more power

My kids have been ridding since they where 3 and 4 and they are now 11 and 13 and racing so I have been through a lot of bikes

Im looking at the TTr-50E which is a 3 speed with no clutch, so there is shifting.

He'll be putting on some trails on private land, riding the yard that sort of thing. He is 6, but a bit on the small side. We took him down to a local dealer yesterday and the 50 is tall enough he's on his tippy toes to ride it, and the 70 was just WAY to big yet. Plus when he does out grow it, i'll pass it down to my younger kid who is 2. My plan was to buy this, when he out grows it, buy him a 70 or 80 and then pass the 50 to the younger kid.

i've steered away from CL mostly because i can only find the honda, and for only about 200 more i can get a brand new yami with a 1 year warranty(im about to deploy so if the bike breaks wifey can just haul it to the dealer)

well if you want a bike you can do stuff to as to get the most out of it then a crf50 or a ktm50 would be good. when he moves up skip the 70 or 80 (unless your talking about two stroke race bikes) and go with a klx110, so many things you can do with them! I just moved my son from a very moded klx110/140 to a CRF150R

Have fun! I love teaching kids how to ride you can see their minds working and once everything clicks they never look back!

Well, i got a good deal on a brand new Yamaham TTR-50E. Electric start, 2009 model, $1150. Took him to the inlaws and he was puttering around and managed to hit a fence post full throttle. Got up, said he blew a gasket in his arm, picked the bike up, started it and rode off
