Screws in Tire Question...

    Hi All,

    When I got home from a quick ride today I noticed that there are three screws in my rear tire, nearly in a perfect line. There are no cracks around the screws. It almost looks as if they were placed in the tire using a screwdriver.

    So... several questions:

    1) Is it ridiculous to think this wasn't purely accidental?
    2) What are the chances I would get 3 screws in a line like this?
    3) Do screws usually go in without any 'collateral' damage around the actual insertion point? (ie: slightly chewed up tire around the screw head [though no signs of that in my case, very clean 'install' of screws])
    4) How often do you guys get screws/nails in your tire?

    I just replaced the rear tire on this bike 2 months ago due to a nail in the rear tire and now this... This will be 2 new rear tires in a 6 month time period... is that a bit ridiculous? Crappy luck? Foul play? (I have no known grudges or grievances against me)

    Wondering people's thoughts. Thanks!

    1)no
    2)4,567,876,352:1 unless you ride through construction sites or park in a lot used by contractors. Then it's more like 872:1
    3)yes
    4)one per 33,333 miles

    Having run a Big Rig over 1 1/2 million miles I know first hand about picking up stuff. The worst case was a open end wrench stuck in the tread. Three in a nice neat row. Anything is possible, but I would ask you, any pissed off GF's or X's. How about the neighbor hood delinquents, have you pissed them off for tromping across your lawn or flower beds or what ever? Like I said it's possible, but for myself I would think by the arrangement and likeness of the screws that they had some help ending up where they are... AJ

    If you inspected the tires before leaving and you didn't ride through a construction site or something, that has to be foul play.

    Getting one or two screws, ok... But three, seriously...

    1) Dismount tire
    b) Remove screws
    3) Patch tire (not plugs)
    D) Remount tire
    5) Balance tire

    Or put in a whole bunch more screws & have a studded tire for next winter.

    you got "screwed"... ok bad joke.. I had something similar happen to me. but mine was 3 nails in a row in my front tire..

    Thanks for the replies... This only helps confirm my fear that it wasn't pure coincidence... Oh well, I'll get it replaced and then be very careful about fully checking each tire when I get to a destination and before I leave that place as well...     I got a screw in my tire, but it was just 1, and I had to replace my rear tire because it ripped my tire going in. your 3 screws look like someone freaking screwed them into your tire with a screw driver, I cant imagine 3 in a nice neat line like that being an accident

    I don't find it so unbelievable, I have gotten multiple screws before. You may have ridden over a box of screws? If it was intentional, I think someone stupid is pissed at you. Why not just drill a hole in the sidewall? It's easier and can not be repaired.

    Don't trust either. Just replace the tire IMO...

    I can't say for sure either way. I am just very skeptical. This is the 3rd rear tire I'll have replaced in 9 months... One on my brother's SV, now two on this bike. The first two were small nails, one nail each tire. This... 3 screws that look like they went in with a screwdriver just makes me skeptical. Especially since overall in those 9 months I've probably only put on a little less than 4,000 miles combined. I've had to replace 1 tire throughout my 6 cars over the past 8 years due to a nail in the tire. (Yes I know the differences in car and bike tires)

    Why not put a tube in it... you probably won't even notice the additional un sprung weight.

    And what are you going to do with a concealed pistol? Shoot the construction workers that dropped the screws, or the damn kids you suspect drilled them into your tire? crackup:

    what is carrying a pistol going to do if you didn't see them do it in the first part?

    maybe it was an accident, maybe it wasn't....either way, patch/plug it properly and ride the rest of that rubber off.

    Haha yeah, the whole concealed thing, bad joke.
    But as far as patch/plug and/or tube... have people really had good success with that? Do you feel that safe going that route? What is the cost involved?
