Any gear that's actually waterproof?

I had good luck with my tourmaster stuff for a couple years.

did you seal up the vents and shit?

also, gloves into your sleeves.




have you washed your jacket/pants at all?

 

Gore Tex jackets are pretty damn good.

My Tourmaster jacket works great for me. After a wash, I always give it a good dousing of scotchgard, helps with the waterproofing.
As far as the pants go, a cheap pair of vinyl pants from cyclegear come with a 5 year warranty. I go through 3 or 4 pair a year. They don't seem to care.

 

Frogg Toggs seal up pretty good as an overgarment. I just ordered a size larger than I need for pants and used my Tourmaster for the jacket. Nikwax works good for sealing up the jacket. The Frogg Toggs are a one season use type of thing, but they're cheap so it works out okay.

 

I had custom motoport pants and a leather teknic jacket (designed for sport bike riders), alpine star boots, and can't remember the gloves I use for the rain. I just put a rubber slicker over the leather jacket and never had a problem with water leakage. And aside from the gloves (which I am happy I wasn't wearing in the accident cause I really didn't feel they would have done much when they easily slid off my hands, I had my summer gloves, alpinestar with carbon knuckles), I can verify by experience that all that gear did protect me in a crash. I'm pretty sure I'd have at least a broken elbow and probably a knee and calf too if it weren't for the armor) and absolutely no road rash.

It was about 1000 dollar setup but worth every penny. Kept me dry for years and did its duty when I needed it.

all of the above products have been very very good and cant beat the warranty, if any issue's pop up..

 

No garments are waterproof. If you ride in the rain long enough, far enough or if it rains hard enough (as in North Florida), you're gonna get wet.

 

No textile has ever been waterproof in my experience. I got wet in Tourmaster, First Gear, Moose, and Gore-Tex stuff.

Get a rain suit. One piece is better.

I have a cheap rain jacket from Cycle Gear and a pair of Carhartt work flex pants. I stay dry.

 

Most manufacturer claims about being 'waterproof' are straight up lies. Water resistant in 15mins of light rain is closer to the truth for most of them. I got lucky found a nice thick rubber helly hansen raincoat at goodwill for $10, I just fold the hood part of the raincoat inside the jacket & put it on over my armored leather jacket. Got cheap rain overalls that construction/highway workers use to put over my leather pants, has velcro on pants legs that seal it up over my boots real nice. I haven't found any gloves other than neoprene that can withstand more than an hour of pouring rain so I use neoprene gloves that fit over my armored ones. These have worked great for me and is definitely waterproof thru 3hr rides in pouring down rain. My boots aren't waterproof but that has not been a problem for me.

 

I've had excellent luck with my first gear stuff.

I have the HT over pants and the Kilimanjaro jacket and i'm rarely wet. I was in the same downpour that you were on monday afternoon and the only part of me that got wet was my crotch. that is the first time that has happened since owning the pants and i have ridden in some serious rain.

both the jacket and pants come with zip in liners so they're awesome for year round duty and the pants vent really well around the crotch area.

I've spent lots of money on gloves trying to find some that are truly waterproof and i don't think there are any out there. I ended up going with heated gloves and a heated liner for the cold days and the gloves keep me dry enough, but the warm is what i really care about.

 

Grab your wallet and head to Aerostitch. I know quite a few serious long distance riders who will rock a stitch through a monsoon and come out the other side dry.

If the $600-$800 price tag is too steep you can always hit the hardware store for some Dutch Harbor bibs and jacket to put on over your gear. That should do the trick for daily commuting.

My tourmaster jacket is reasonably water proof. I wear regular rain pants over sweats and that also works. For longer rides in the rain i get wet but i wear polyester underneath so i stay warm and dry quickly.

If price is an issue, you might consider Joe Rocket's Survival Suit. It's a one piece textile suit. I've had mine for about 4 years now. It started leaking on me last year. I re-sealed the seams and scotch gaurded it and it's good to go again. Check out newenough.com. they had the best price.

 

I had the same issue with my Tourmaster set. Any real rain would quickly defeat it and I would get wet. My simple/cheap solution was a Coleman rain suit from Fred Meyer. A size larger than needed to slip over the Tourmaster costume and I'm always perfectly dry.
