Wife decided she wanted to come out here to visit her before her husband gets out of the Army and they head back closer to home. The wife has always wanted to go to FL on vacation, but flights for 2 people, car rental etc are a little more expensive than we can normally afford, so I decided to ride the GSX-R out here a week before the wife flies out (gas and food was cheaper than a round trip plane ticket and gives us transportation). I left home last Thu morning, and got here this morning at right around 3am. I would have been here 2 days sooner, but I got caught by bad weather when I was at my cousins house in The Colony, TX , so waited 2 days for the weather between there and my daughters house to clear up yesterday. The ride has been pretty uneventful for the most part so far, just a lot of miles. I had friends from the Katana Riders website to stop and visit along the way, which saved me by not havng to rent a single hotel room on the way here or on my way home. Yesterdays run covered 1070 miles according to googlemaps. Here's the route I took to get here http://tinyurl.com/yfa3ugd . Once the wife gets back on the plane to head back home, I'm going to make a short detour and ride up to Deals Gap in NC so I can meet a few more people from the Katana Riders site, and ride the Dragon. I have a hotel room reserved in the area for a night (paid for by yet another Katrider kindly letting me use some of his saved up travel bonus point), and will probably only ride half the day or so then start making my way back towards home. If the weather looks like it will be too bad from Reno to home, I'll just head through So Cal instead, and have the wife pick me up in Redding with my truck if needed. Sounds like you're having quite the adventure there. I should tell the relatives I'm 2 wheeling it home this Christmas. The area you're heading into is twisties heaven. The North GA mountains and Eastern TN and Western Carolinas are nothing but mountain playground. Deals is the real deal, though. If you veered through North GA you'd want to start near Dahlonega, and head towards Helen via Neals/Wolfpen/Hogpen gaps and up towards Brasstown bald. They aren't as rollicking as Deals, but the scenery is amazing and it'd keep you from slabing it the whole way. Good warm-up if nothing else. Stay safe. |

I'm sure you've been told to try and hit Deal's mid-week and in the morning. Not sure if I'd even want to be riding the Gap on a weekend. If you're hooking up with some locals, I'm sure they'll take you on surrounding roads that they like even more than The Dragon's Tail. Hope you have good rubber on your bike. And you'll barely be able to crane your neck far enough and high enough to look through some of the corners. LOTS of fun! It sure was one of MY best rides ever! Good luck and have fun, Mark H. |

Actually I'm hoping at least one friend shows up with their GoPro video camera so I can get some video of the rides, but yes there will definetly be some pics. Last edited by Spraguepsycho1; 10-30-2009 at 09:48 AM.. | |

I've been debating doing something similar and riding out to see my family on the e. coast but the thought of doing it on my current bike (another GSXR) is daunting. I'm guessing an added expense would be that the tires would most likely need to be replaced when you get back. Good luck on the trip and kudos to you for getting there comfortably. |

Keith and James immediately come to mind, and possibly Mark once he gets his Busa back together. It's funny how much just standing up on the pegs for a few miles helps. When your legs start to cramp up in the knees and your ass gets sore (about every 80 miles in my case), just getting off the seat for a minute or two makes the pain go away for another 40 miles or so, then I'm usually ready to top off the gas tank and smoke a quick cigarette anyways. Another thing I learned with the GSX-R is if I set my big tank bag in just the right position on the tank, I can lay down and rest my chest on it, removing pretty much all weight from my wrists. |

This is just a little bit of what you'll have. Just a couple things though and I am sure your buddies will tell you this also. Watch for lost semi trucks that get up there from time to time. The other thing on the TN side there is always a high LEO presence. NC staters are cool, hopefully they will give you a little guided ride over to hell's bender like they did for me. ![]() |
