Is it legal to clean off/warm up your tires on main roads (Minor swerving)? Just pulled my bike off the truck yesterday and decided I wanted to get away from everything for a bit. So I went down into Richland to grab a bite at Wendy's. On my way over to the DMV or DOL (w/e you guys call it) I was warming up/cleaning me tires on Geo Way in preparation to hit a freeway. It was very controlled, I stayed in half of my lane, gave safe following distance and made sure there was no one on the side of me. Sure enough, the idiot in front of me slams his breaks so now I'm following to closely and i stop my warming and look in my mirrors again to check spacing. Sure enough a LEO is right behind me with a big ole smile in his unmarked car. So obviously he pulled me over and asked why, Of course I said no cause I wasnt speeding and doing this in Denver is NOT a problem whatsoever. He then asks me if I know what Neglecent Driving is or something along those lines. End result is he doesn't ticket me or anything, checks my stuff and kindly reminds me I have to pay WA State 75$ when I get my license here for some resinstatement. Cool guy, we started shooting the breeze he actually rides himself. I'm just curious to know if this is illegal. Because in my thoughts, it's a controlled environment, no irrational lane changes or close calls, safe following distance, within the speed limit etc. Thanks in advance. |

| Washington (VA) ![]() | Well, I can't really speak for Colorado law, but in Washington a motorcyclist has full use of the entire lane, and as long as it's not a blatant reckless or negligent act, which endangers life or property, you would be clear. Not sure what the issue was on this stop. Maybe the fact that you had to stop abruptly? Like I said, I can't speak for Colorado law. |

I make sure like you state, that nobody is near front or back and will do the same thing. When you think back to an MSF course or a private riding course, you will do similar things between the cones. As long as you can intelligently articulate why you did what you did, and as USMS said, stay well within your lane, you will be good. Cheers |
