Hey everyone, i searched a little bit but couldnt find much for some reason. Anyway, i drained all the oil out of my bike already and took out the oil filter as well, and im going to be buying the oil filter and oil tomorrow. I dont have a manual with the bike so i will be getting the info from you guys. how much oil do i need and what kind do you guys recommend?

Buy the big jug of Rotella from WallyWorld & fill the crank case until your oil level window is somewhere between high & low.

im guessing it only gonna need 3 quarts of oil. Look in the manual or just above the little oil window on the bike.

If you fill it with 3 quarts you'll be having problems realllll soon. It's only 2.2L, or roughly 2.3 quarts. It says how much is needed on the clutch cover.

I second that about using rotella T (full synthetic) from walmart.

have used it in every street and race bike that i have owned for the past 5 years with zero issues. and at around $20 an oil change it doesn't break the bank like some of those "other" brands.

1 big jug (gallon) will be more than enough for 600 oil change

The manual states 2.6 quarts but it really takes just under 3, but never a full 3. And I use amsoil - I don't know why you would use Rotella. It's a diesel oil and is actually about 97% short of being full synthetic - read their MSDS.

Where does the manual say 2.6? It's 2.3 quarts. Filling just under 3 is way over.

That may be if you're changing the oil only, but he is changing the oil and filter - that requires more. Anyway, you should be looking through the sight glass with your bike level (both directions) to determine the amount of oil. Don't go by the recommended amounts - the sight glass can't lie.

Edit - it says 2.6 quarts on step 13.

Just fill it up to the top, run the motor a little while and then top it off.

Should be no problem.

Okay, The CRANKCASE holds about 2.3 or whatever the label on the side says. But the first time you start the bike after changing the oil, it will have to fill from the oil pump, through the filter, and up into the engine.

After filling the oil until it reads in the range on the sight glass (WITH THE BIKE SITTING LEVEL, NOT ON THE KICKSTAND!!) start the bike and let it run for about 10 seconds or until the oil light in the dash goes out plus about 5 seconds, whichever takes longer. Then, let it settle for about 30 seconds and check your sight glass again. My experience (K6 Gix six) is that if will take somewhere on the order of 2.6-2.8 qts to fill to the top of the ideal range after priming the oil system.

One more thing: if you run the bike for more than about 30 seconds and the oil light hasn't gone out, shut it off immediately and figure out what you forgot to tighten. It shouldn't be hard. There will be a big puddle under the bike.

Good advice. Whenever I'm servicing a bike that includes changing the spark-plugs, I like to leave the plugs out of the head and just turn the motor over with the starter til the oil-light goes out and then top-off the oil-level prior to installing the plugs and starting the motor.

Ah I see. I've always just filled up to the oil line from the rotella T gallon jug. Never knew I was using that much. I stand corrected.

And why take the plugs out and turn the engine over? Does it circulate oil better?

I use it cuz it's good. You should read up on it - diesel oils have properties that are highly desirable in motorcycle use.

Keeps it from starting(duh), and circulates a little faster on the starter than it would with the plugs still in it.
