fork tube sizes?
fork tube sizes- motorcycles that have 35mm or larger tubes?

I'm looking for a replacement set so I can persuade some guy not to saw the frontend off my parts Goldwing before he sells it to me.
Doesn't have to be for a GW- just an equal strength

Great find Rippn, but....
we seem to have missed the point where I need the list so I can find a equal sized or better Front End to offer the guy. And a frame section too.
yes, I'll prob call Allens as the easy way first.

I'll give you that I missed the size by 6mm and Please make that we seem to have Lost the point, also yes, there was boatload of info on that link.

Bear with me:
Reguarding what exactly I'm trying to find and the situation on my parts bike.
I have this GL1200 for parts, but the guy I got it from only owns it from about 6" behind the neck back. The front of the bike belongs to his neighbor who wants to use it for a trike. I'm reasoning that if I can find the neighbor an equally strong front end I can keep that part (which would make it Much more convenient than having this 1 wheeled anchor in backyard), maybe even get the parts bike running as a naked.

How Did I Do?
Anyone have a suitable frame and frontend laying around?

That's only the beginning of the tortured story - bike had a wiring fire that ignited/melted other things, among them: seat, tank cover (partial), controls, sidecovers, windshield...
note: I'm not really worrying about these things until I know if I can get it running (except for the wiring maybe).
Additionally It's had the bodywork disassembled and sitting in the backyard (in snow of course) of the guy w/ 7/8 ownership and it"s a injected model.
Yes, I have a bill of sale for GW parts.

cutting down fork tubes
If you buy fork tubes that are the correct diameter but too long, can you cut them down and rethread for the screw in caps?

I need 36mm fork tubes for my '81 GPZ-550. They need to be 675mm long but the only easy-to-find tubes are 750mm long.

thanks
Dave

It's not just the tubes you have to worry about. It's also the springs inside that will need changed replaced. Then you have to consider the valve assembly and whether or not those are the same, etc. Much more than just cutting down tubes.

I'm not cutting down the stock tubes, just trying find tubes to replace the stock tubes--they're pretty pitted.

But you're right--it's gonna be a project.

So if all you're doing is buying the tubes them selves, I see no reason you can't cut them down. However, keep in mind that if you cut them it will most likely damage the chrome around the cut and this could present issues down the road. However, I don't see a problem with just buying new tubes and cutting them down.

owait....if you have to rethread the tops, that could be an issue. A professional machine shop may be able to help with that.
