'02 R1 hot idle issue
Been putting together project. PO repaired cylinder head and wouldn't run. Cams and cam chain were incorrect, so I fixed and put the bike back together. It now starts easily and runs fine, however at normal and hot engine temps the bike will not idle. Idles fine when cold. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

What do you mean by repaired cylinder head?

Irrelevant to the current issue, however I believe he had frame sliders on it and he laid it down, cracking the head (frame sliders install on upper engine mount bolt and would push it right into the head where the head was cracked) at a water jacket, causing coolant leakage. The head was welded.

Anyone reading this story should not install frame sliders with that design LOL (or remove them if they have them installed); easier to replace the fairing than the cylinder head. Same thing happened to someone else on these forums on a newer R1 as well.

Sounds like a vacuum leak or tight valves to me honestly.

Valve clearances are correct, but you might be on to something with the leakage.. A poor seal between throttle bodies and cylinder intake could certainly cause that symptom. Thanks for reminding me as I completely overlooked that! Little carb cleaner around the intake boots should confirm or refute

A lean condition will allow you to set idle when cold and it will rise with temp.
Are the pilot air screws set correctly?
