I Ride: In search of the next 35mph corner......
If you zoom in on it real close, it looks like it is....in spots... hard to tell if it is pavement or oiled..

I'm sure one of the Willamette Valley dudes will know the answer..

Looks pretty dam cool though!

I lived in Bend for about 10 years and I drove back and forth over the santiam plenty of times...

I know the 126 and 242 loop is a nice little run..and the 20 gets closed a lot during the winter due to slides...so probably late in the year it's a good run...as far as gravel, I couldn't say but I know central oregon is infamous for it's use of red cinders....EVERYWHERE....

If you are in that area, you'll need to check out this stretch..(so I've heard). It goes from Blue River on 126, south to Oakridge on 58.. goes by the name of the "Auferderhide"

hope that works..

The road is paved and the corners are sweet. The asphalt isn't the best but it's a jolly good time. As you're riding west to east past Green Peter Lake there can be cars parked on the right shoulder, people camping/fishing. After that it's traffic free. Single lane with turnouts for the most part and the top can have sand in some corners. It tops the pass just shy of 5000' so it will be opening late this year like the other passes.

Are we talking what looks to be called the W. Cascades scenic byway NF-19? I've heard and read about this one, looks to be a nice one, but like noted due to its elevation bet it won't open up anytime soon.

Read this thread... starting with Post 12. Lee posted a link with that road and asked about it. We discussed it, I asked a friend about that road. Not a good sport bike road.

i have a riding buddy that lives near there, and he lead all us on a loop up to Portland.

Rather than riding I5 northward (boring) he took us very near there, but he by-passed NF-11 saying that there are spots where the pavement drops (whether he meant sunken grades, or that edges, at points along the way, of of NF-11 pavement is falling off the side.... i dont know.

Rather than NF-11, which we discussed, he took us to portland going 20 east, 22 north, turning north at Detroit lake, hwy 224. (note, there were very-very short unpaved graveled sections on 224) (also note, this info is from last year)

Also worth notingt that was one VERY VERY SWEET DAY riding. It was as nice as NF-25, the road leading to Mt St Helens eastside.
(nearly no cars, lots-and-lots of twisties, and very beautiful)

i'll point my friend, who lives near Sweet Home, and rides all those roads, to your thread.

Perhaps he can give all of us an update

The road is single lane for about 35 miles down from hwy 22. It does have pullouts on lots of the corners, there is brush onto the sides of the road, potholes and the likes. That being said it is still a great road that keeps you on your toes the whole time, with some great scenery. Once your get within about 10 miles of the lake the road opens up to two lanes and gets some good pavement.
It probably won't open untill the 1st of July with the snow pack we had this winter.
Last year it was in construction when Flailer and I tried to take the road, maybe he will head up and hit it this year.
