| Newbie   Joined: Mar 2009 From: Bainbridge Island, WA I Ride: VTR1000, Custom CBR thingy | My custom CBR -Kind of long- By popular demand. Well, demand anyway. I started out with a 1987 CBR1000f basket case, that I acquired through a crappy deal. I wanted a custom bike so I decided to make it into one. Then I raised the back of the tank up, and started reshaping it with hand formed steel sheet. shaping the tank was pretty easy. Getting the miles of welds ground smooth and water tight wasn't so easy. I put a skim coat of everlgass on the outside and tank sealer on the inside. Very little of the original tank remains.   I mocked up a new subframe out of .5" steel angle, and then replicated it out of aluminum tube. I outsourced the final welding on that.  The frame on these bikes were never meant to be seen, so I decided to build frame covers that would look like an aluminum frame. I mocked them up with poster board, then replicated them in aluminum, grinding all the welds smooth. This was the first time I had welded aluminum. I used the same basic method to build the radiator covers, headlight housing, under engine muffler, tail, seat pans, fork covers, and hand guards.  At some point i decided my headlight and gauges were crap, and bought a used GSXR 750 headlight on ebay. I cut off the sides and built a new headlight housing to hold it. I integrated a Veypor data computer into the new housing. I also got a pair of pro-tek rearsets for some Yamaha, and made them work. The seat i upolstered myself. I had a professional shop do it, but the shiny leather and piping, (yes piping) looked like something from the 60s. I redid it with heavy Ultrasuede on my moms sewing machine.    Next I striped it all down and sent a few parts out to paint. I just wanted a pearl orange, but It had to be custom mixed and applied. It's sort of a metallic candy tangerine. While the paint was being done, I built a swingarm brace, put leds in the hand guards and tail, built the side mufflers, and did a lot of aluminum sanding. After all that I reassemble it all, and finally I built the fenders. Then of course I took It half way apart again to clean the carbs out, again. Are those pipes as loud as they look? Had it on the street much? Do you get hassled by the leo? I am sure it draws a fair amount of regular attention. Thanks for sharing. |

It actually does a lot of sitting in the garage. After all that work one of the valve stem seals leaks. It's not too bad of a job to fix it, but I'm just tired of working on the thing, and have been putting it off. I know, I know it's a waste. Good call on the headlight. I was actually using the RC8 and Superduke as inspiration. Yeah those pipes are loud. It took me about 2 years, working a few hours every weekend or so. |
