Now we're getting somewhere.
Purdue University students develop high performance electric motorbike

It doesn't seem too long ago when we were reporting on breakthroughs in battery technology that would allow electric motorbikes like the Brammo Enertia to travel as much as 45 miles (72 km) on a single charge. These days, we're seeing most of the recent arrivals (such as the 2012 Zero S range, for instance, or the gorgeous custom-built Brutus 2.0) flying past the 100 miles (160 km) barrier with relative ease, a range long enough to quieten even the most fervent of petrol-heads. Two Purdue University engineering students have recently completed the conversion of a Yamaha YZF600r to electric power that further pushes the envelope to more than 120 miles (193 km), using batteries cooled by phase change material.

It only does 120mph and they don't say how long it takes to charge? More than 5 minutes? No thanks.

And, it's got this huge box hanging off the bottom only inches from the ground...how's the cornering on that thing again? Uh...do these guys even understand motorcycles?

Maybe they're not as savvy about certain bike elements, but they are doing something; they are trying.

Hopefully they are learning about electrical energy and storage development, and not heavily relying primarily on donations from existing commercial products/offerings.

Dude, it's just a prototype. First it's got to be proven it can be done, then it has to be proven it can be done effectively.

Maybe I should give them some credit.

The "r6" is better than their 50mph "porsche".

Interesting concept. If you look around you will see more electric vehicles, why not motorcycles too? If they can make it practical (which I doubt anytime soon) for the true enthusiast who loves to ride hard and long then it would be another way to go.

Until then however it will probably remain a good concept. I don't know too many riders who just ride short distances. With 120 miles as a maximum and depend on rider's throttle habits, weight, terrain, etc... it would not seem practical at this point.

Dunno, 120 would almost get me to and from work for a week....

I still wouldn't want an electric bike though, as their completely silent.

other than the boxy shape of the battery, which could be improved/moved, it's quite a step in the right direction.

like the nissan leaf or the zero bikes, it would make a decent commuter.

I'm with bluuuuuuuuuuuuu though on the recharge times making this a viable solution.

also, I wonder what it weighs.

Loud electrons don't save lives!

You may have to put a playing card on the wheels so people can hear you coming!

My co-worker let me drive his electric (basically a DR 400) The silence was bizarre. Bit heavy for what it was, but all in all it was two wheels and fun.

That was a home made and really impressive for what it was. Overall they may get to an new power source with hydrogen (or something), but I have doubts about straight battery electrics ever being practicle.

good start. The down side to these are, they're too quiet. hmmm, maybe they can design a small motor that makes motorcycle noises.. maybe a brapppp or something like that

you guys and your noise desires really confuse me. noise pollution does no one any good.

flying through woods and mountain roads would be fucking epic.

Depends...

In town, pretty much the speed limit or close to it.

On a back road I'll rarely break a buck.

Out in the middle of some place like Nevada or on a track, pretty much whatever speed my tiny balls will allow.
