Purdue University students develop high performance electric motorbike It doesn't seem too long ago when we were reporting on breakthroughs in battery technology that would allow electric motorbikes like the Brammo Enertia to travel as much as 45 miles (72 km) on a single charge. These days, we're seeing most of the recent arrivals (such as the 2012 Zero S range, for instance, or the gorgeous custom-built Brutus 2.0) flying past the 100 miles (160 km) barrier with relative ease, a range long enough to quieten even the most fervent of petrol-heads. Two Purdue University engineering students have recently completed the conversion of a Yamaha YZF600r to electric power that further pushes the envelope to more than 120 miles (193 km), using batteries cooled by phase change material. http://www.gizmag.com/kleinschmidt-d...orcycle/21299/ |

And, it's got this huge box hanging off the bottom only inches from the ground...how's the cornering on that thing again? Uh...do these guys even understand motorcycles? |

If they can make it practical (which I doubt anytime soon) for the true enthusiast who loves to ride hard and long then it would be another way to go. Until then however it will probably remain a good concept. I don't know too many riders who just ride short distances. With 120 miles as a maximum and depend on rider's throttle habits, weight, terrain, etc... it would not seem practical at this point. |

I still wouldn't want an electric bike though, as their completely silent. | |

I'm with bluuuuuuuuuuuuu though on the recharge times making this a viable solution. also, I wonder what it weighs. loud pipes don't save lives, they just piss people off. |

Bit heavy for what it was, but all in all it was two wheels and fun. That was a home made and really impressive for what it was. Overall they may get to an new power source with hydrogen (or something), but I have doubts about straight battery electrics ever being practicle. |
