| Newbie Joined: Feb 2010 From: Kirkland, WA | Freedom of choice is what makes America great!! However, cars also have the same ability to choose no insurance, not legal but that doesn't stop cagers either. Here's an example of what can happen, this happened to a client of mine in February this year. He was riding his 1999 Kawasaki ZR1100 to work on the backroads of Bothell, WA when a cager failed to see him. The car hit him square on the left side with its front bumper. As you can imagine having your leg smash between car and bike resulted in some serious injuries. His injuries include a fractured ankle, meniscus tears in both knees requiring surgery, and torn rotator cuff also requiring surgery. This rider is facing medical bills that are likely going to pile up to over 50K. He will also miss many months from work, causing even more financial strain on his family. All of this from a fairly low speed collision, he was only going 35mph and the car was coming out of a driveway. In my opinion you buy bike insurance to protect you from the cagers. Underinsured Motorist (UIM) insurance is an absolute necessity in my humble opinion. Liability insurance is great to cover you in case you cause an accident. However, for most riders the real danger is if a cager hits you with little or no insurance. The minimum level of insurance in WA is 25K, if the car has insurance. That can be gone quickly as you can see. UIM will step in pay for the damages (medical bills, lost wages, and compensated for having to deal with it all) caused by the cager. Over half of my motorcycle accident clients end up needing to make a UIM claim because the cager did not have enough insurance to cover all the damage suffered by the rider. The risk is very real and should not be taken if at all possible. Sorry for the long post, but I hate to see you fine folks take chances without knowing the full potential consequences. Ride safe, Max Meyers (P.S. - Yes, it's true I am a motorcycle accident lawyer and obviously a little biased.) |

So, the bottom line is that you are perfectly legal until you cause property damage, at which point you are going to be held liable for all damages. Let me spell it out for all the room temperature IQ people. If you are so stupid as to ride with no liability insurance you place your vehicle, your family's domicile, and all of your assets, including any 401K, etc. at risk. The pit bulls that get you off on your speeding tickets have brothers and sisters who specialize in bending people over pickle barrels and financially sodomizing them. Your call. |

Bout a year ago heading west on 164 a car pulled out of a drive way, in front of his work F-350. I saw the pictures of the car, it was hard to believe the dude lived through the accident as the loaded truck drove over him. (bout 4-ton loaded with logging gear. Totaled his truck; Was unable to work for months. Dude had NO insurance of any kind and nothing to sue for; Just saying...AJ |

| Peg Dragger | ![]() that compels me to beg you to get insurance. You need UM/UIM coverage in case you get hit-and-run or are involved in an accident with a hit-and-run driver. Motorcycle insurance is not to protect others but to protect yourself.See this for more info: www.washingtonmotorcyclelaw.com/motorcycle-accidents.html 2) You must have insurance to ride in Oregon (or any other state that requires insurance). So if you ride across the river and get pulled over you will suffer the same fate as an uninsured Oregonian. That means fine, penalties, impound, and suspension. In addition, in Oregon if you get into an accident and don't have insurance your damages will be limited to medical bills and lost wages (no pain and suffering). 3) Motorcycle insurance is cheap (especially VFR) and the more you buy the cheaper it gets per $ of coverage. I know thing may be tight for you, but $40 per month is less than most people spend on coffee, beer, or cigarettes. (And in your case, all of the above). | Bat Crazed Joined: May 2009 From: WA I Ride: 08, R1 | I'm sorry but I saw no need to take pictures of the totaled truck. It was towed to a shop in Centralia where I just had to look. Next time I see Ray I can ask for copies as I'm more than sure he has plenty as his claim for lost wages and pain and suffering was still pending, last time we talked. You might be able to look in the archives of the local news for the article. It took place about a year and 1/2 ago. East of Bonnie Lake on that long straight before you come into the town of Buckley...AJ |

I've put too much into my life to put the future well being of my family at risk over $40/month. I've lived off pennies a day, ate food from soup kitchens and trash cans, I won't subject my family to that. Running the streets without insurance is a calculated risk. Unless you have no family, nobody that cares about you, and no possessions you care about, it sounds like your calculator is broken. |
