Well, my helmet was ground down about 1/8 of an inch, in about a 5sq inch circle. I broke my collar bone at the time, and it was a highside.

I was probably going faster than him, and went FLYING.

I haven't seen a full face helmet do that to someone before though... no matter what the circumstance.

Its simple and a very old saying;
A $10 helmet for a $10 head.

Was looking at the new Shoei Modular helmet today. Thing is the shit. Went over and tried the Scorpion Modular right after. Both fit, but yea, There is a $300 difference. I'll be buying the Neotec after I get back.
My X-Eleven is getting 4-5 yrs old and starting to pack out.
My heads worth it to Me.

MSRP $419.99 - $424.99

HJC AC-12 Carbon Vader Helmet

Eh, he's smiling.

Before you go getting your panties all in a twist, keep in mind that he appears to be neurologically intact after a 60mph head impact. I'd say it did it's job well enough.

I'd bet that smile is mostly adrenaline & drug induced. And possibly the very fact that he's alive. Next day he probably had a lot fewer smiles for a camera and a lot more swelling.

Guys.

GUYS!

I just totally realized something!

People in Volvos also get hurt when they crash, and don't have that much of a statistically different chance of dying in those "super safe" premium cars over say....a bottom of the barrel Ford Escort!

Also, no matter how many tests they run to tell you an Arai is worse than a Bell is better than a Suomy...if the highest rated helmet doesn't fit and the medium rated helmet does...

86.7% of internet users say the highest rated helmet will still protect you better. Because proper head fitment isn't as important as the sticker on the side and being able to soapbox because you "only ride with the best rated stuffs".

The "snell" tests are fairly weak compaired with life's crashes. I mean the fall test amounts to 84 lbs. and no helmet passes "better" than another. It's a pass or fail test.

Plastic's bend on impact but break down after a few years. Carbon fiber or Fiberglass absord shock but will break and shatter. Thats why you hear both comments every few years, but its Plastic helmets you need to replace every couple years, and Fiberglass you need to replace after a crash.

Here is the snell testing info....It's less than impressive, but if you fail this what good is it.
http://www.smf.org/testing

Sucks for the guy that crashed but really a 60 mpg face plant goes way beyond the test to get a snell or DOT rating.

Without a specific model or senerio your Volvo vs Escort example makes little sense. Even "statistically much different" is also too loose to argue but your inclusion for the term "dying" kills your point. One guy could survive a fall from 30ft and another die from the very same fall and this is the problem with stats.

What I think you are saying is, a consumer should do more research beyond companies' marketing, cost and general opinion on which helmet is safer.

It always seems a shame to have to reiterate safety equipment should fit, be in good condition and be used correctly but, sir you are correct to do so.

IMHO, A fancy HJC is lipstick on a pig...., (I have 2 alphabet helmets) I know they are cheap POS. One is a dirt bike helmet and the other is a open face that I use to make Me cruise on the 14.

I think Bell used/originated that saying back when they were the best (60s-70s era.)

I've had my Neotec for about a month or so. Fits great (I have a Shoei shaped head). It's a little noisy when all the vents are open, but it has excellent ventilation. The pinlock shield works great for preventing fog.
So far it's is my favorite helmet that I've had.

I picked up my Shoei B-Boz x-12 for $300 and it was like-new. I don't want to spend $850 on a helmet, that's for sure!

Why the mod helmet? I never understood these? Even a Shoei seems like it would be less structuraly sound than a one piece shell. And the Murphy factor would almost ensure you'll have it flipped up when you crash.

Fixed that part for you Matt.

In response to your buddies condition, I'd be pretty damn happy about just some scratches on my face if it hit the pavement at 60mph
