Would you
use airless tires if they were available?

Sorry, my attempt to slow down global warming by becoming a pirate has started to leak through. The r has been removed to prevent offending any of those who don't support efforts to end global warming...

But isn't changing tire pressure strictly a function of heat management? Under hard track use, the tire heats up, which in turn heats up the air inside the tire. If there is no air in the tire to heat up, do you need to change tire pressures? I'm thinking that problem goes away if there is no air to heat up actually....

But there is still the issue of carrying capacity of the tire based on air pressure. I'm not sure how you change the load bearing characteristics of the tire without the ability to change the air pressure in the tires.

Still, sounds innovative, and they'll figure it out someday.

Well the jury is out until they've got some real life testing. I don't know what their development progress has been, but based on the pictures it looks like that design is only going to work on 3+ wheeled vehicles that don't require rigidity from different angles. I'm sure they can and will build something that works, but for right now I like knowing what I'm riding on... I like having the ability to adjust tire pressure based on what I'm doing with my bike and what the ambient weather is like. Sure you could also buy a few sets of these airless tires and have one for each occassion, but that just seems silly. Plus I don't think it's possible to get the proper non-adjustable combinations of tire compound and structural firmness exactly right for every condition. At least with air tires you can adjust one to compensate for the other.

I'm not resistant to change, I'm just skeptical of it

It's not available now because it's not ready. Not until it's ready will i ride those tires,bur after that, hell yes

they won't last, Plastics are not durable enough to stand up to even one season of riding or year of driving. hit one thing that makes them deform just a little bit and guess who needs a new tire?

Desired firmness is a variable based on speed & surface conditions, imo. It is not necessarily constant.

I have seen somthing like this for bicycles, and they rode terrible. Felt like
you were riding on low tires, alot of drag and real heavy.

In a perfectly clean world, but in reality they will fill with dirt and mud and go out of balance and loose symmetrical flex.
