What, you ask, makes a motorcycle helmet "all-weather?" Why, built-in heating and cooling, of course. Averill started with a standard Vega modular helmet, adding an evaporative cooler powered by a solar panel on top. The cooler pulls air from an intake on the helmet's side, sucking up more air at higher speeds and blowing it through a sponge, across the wearer's face. When things get too cold, there's a heater built into the liner, created from a heated mouse pad and powered by a lithium battery. Averill is looking to get the project mass-produced, but that's easier said than done, when it comes to a safety products like this -- and Kickstarter, apparently, isn't playing ball. Check out a video of the helmet after the break. (I don't know how to embed video, so here's a link): Article with video Would you buy it? |

Naysayers ![]() You'll wear heated gloves, vests jackets, pants, but not a heated helmet? Sounds like a natural to me. As for the cooling, the small amount of electricity from a solar cell won't have any issues with a moistened sponge. I'd be more concerned about the sponge drying out. Also, while evaporative cooling is surprisingly efficient, it doesn't work very well in high humidity (but would work very well up here in the northwest.) KevinD |

I'd just like one with airflow designed by an actual aeronautics engineer, rather than some guy armed with a power drill and cheap plastic bits. Not saying those lids don't exist, just saying that I'd like one. Of course, they cost as much as an entire freaking BIKE, so I do not have one. |
