Honda RC213V Street Version???
Honda will make RC213V for the road???
It may cost the same as the Ducati Desmo, but oh so worth it!!!

Honda insiders have revealed the firm will on Friday announce the plan to put a road-going version of the MotoGP V4 RC213V into production for 2014 as it tries to give a massive boost of excitement to the Honda brand.

Honda boss Takanobu Ito will make the announcement on Friday this week as part of a bigger speech outlining the future of the firm with the RC213V production bike being presented as a halo bike which will be hugely expensive and strictly limited in numbers.

This is definitely not a replacement for the CBR1000RR Fireblade and will be more akin to the £40,000 Ducati Desmosedici RR which sold out and was built in bigger numbers than first planned despite a massive price tag.

The rumours of a road-going Honda based on a MotoGP bike have been doing the rounds since the World Championship ditched 500cc two-strokes in favour of four-stroke 1000cc machines in 2003.

It's known Honda was very close to putting a 1000cc V5 into production in 2006 but this never happened for reasons known only to Honda.

It now appears Honda is ready to make the leap and in part this may be helped by the firm's decision to make a run of customer specification engines for the Claiming Rule Teams (CRT) in 2013 which will change the way the engines are made.

There are no official details at the moment and we will have to wait for the official speech to be given in Tokyo on Friday but it’s understood Ito will make reference to some of the greatest Hondas of the past such as the RC30 when he makes his address.

A Honda insider said: "This has been talked about for a while now within Honda but there is now the firm intention to put a bike derived from the MotoGP bike into production so we can show the kind of engineering, passion and excitement Honda has become known for.”

A full MCN investigation into this story will be in the September 26 issue on sale next week along with updates online as soon as there is official word from Honda.

Well, since Honda is participating in the CRT program and building these bikes in significantly larger numbers and actually selling them instead of just leasing them to people there is a significantly better chance of this happening now.

True, Honda IS going to sell a slightly dumbed-down RC213V to CRT teams next year. It's basically a 2012 spec bike with valve springs instead of pneumatic valves.

It's still a bit of a stretch for them to make a true consumer/road version, but stranger things have happened (just usually not at Honda).
Another positive is Honda might be able to homologate such a bike for Superbike racing.

Considering the $26k engine claiming rule, it seems they will be loosing money on that deal!?

Honda can sell the motor for as much as they like. Other CRT teams will just be able to claim it for 20,000 euros.

Actually, only factory teams can claim motors, not CRT teams. But I'm sure Yamaha and Ducati will each take one for 20k Euros and Honda will spend much more than that building them.

You are right, guess I wasn't aware of that. So each Honda CRT team can expect to be claimed once by Yamaha and once by Ducati during the season.

That's why it's a dumbed-down version, not the latest and greatest.

Ducati/Yamaha can claim the engines all they want - they probably won't learn anything from a 1-2 year old engine without any of the accompanying electronics.

They would have to make 1000 of them the 1st year. And 2000 the second year for wsbk homologation. I don't think Honda would be willing to risk tens of millions of dollars to run them in Wsbk...

I don't think they would be legal in Motogp either, perhaps the engine would be. CRTs have to run prototype frames don't they?

It's my understanding that some of the CRT's are basically tweaked RSV4's. I know some of the early Moto2 bikes were basically R6's with a motor swap.

I define it as non-production. Dorna probably defines it as anything that will fill the grid and make the CRTs more competitive.
