Italian vs Japanese
Start off, My first bike was a 2005 Yamaha R1, Loved it, rode about 100 to 250 a day if i had fuc-around time. It's been about 6 years since me and 'The Sexy' parted ways, and was looking at getting a new girl to spruce up.

Cant decide between Italian or revert back to Japanese.

I will again be using it to commute, and with all of the support and ease out here, I would like to get in on a couple track days.

I could go 3 different ways with the Duc: Motard, Monster, or the now 1199

and the only way i would go with the Yami is the new R1

have had interest in Moto Guzzi, but know nothing about them other than they look bitch'n.

Honestly, whichever one gives you the biggest boner. I personally would pick the Monster or Hyper, just from your list of intended uses though.

there's only 2 things that'll be alive after a nuclear explosion. Cochroaches and Guzzi's.

Guzzi's are all about character. Not the fastest but MASSIVE torque. Very fun every-day bikes. Extremely awesome around town. Comfortable enough to tour though, nice upright stance most of the time.

It really depends what you want...If you want a RR bike, go with the R1 or 1199

If you want a standard, but fun bike that is slightly more sporty than the other: Monster. If you want a standard that's more functional with more character: Guzzi.


There's also german...just sayin.


If you can find one, a mid 2000's V11 Cafe Sport from guzzi is an absolutely bitching bike. Top spec, very fun. My brother has one. Good choice if you want to go used, if you can find one that is, pretty rare.

Unless you want to blister the straights at a buck and a half, don't discount the Guzzi as something to take to the track. They are a stone blast in the corners. I have managed to use up the vast majority of the tread pattern on two sets of PR2's. All you have to do is remove the center stand.

As much as it pains me to publicly agree with the Bavarian Whore, some of the naked oil heads can be fun.

The Monster is more or less a city bike. A decent one, but it's not really aimed 100% at canyon carving.

The Hyper is a beast that is awesome, but a bit like building a house with a sledgehammer

The 1199 is a competent sport bike with all the cool stuff on it and Italian sensibilities.

The R1 is a competent sport bike with all the cool stuff on it with Japanese reliability.

The Moto Guzzi is a power cruiser with Style.

I Ride: '05 HD XL1200C, '08 Yamaha XT250, and an '04 TT-R 125 when the kid lets me.
Once you go Italian, it's hard to come back to anything else. You'll notice that you've picked up a cheap imitation Italian accent. In the middle of the night, you'll have cravings for antipasto and fresh linguini. You won't be able to go to sleep without the soft jingle of either a dry clutch or a tambourine.

Do yourself a favor. Stick to the R1 and then you won't have to go through withdrawals if you should ever have to give up an Italian. I sure miss mine, even if I had to go through all sorts of weirdness to get her to start on a cold morning. It was worth it.

I have lusted for an Exotic many a time. Came close to the 1098 before the R1. I don't see a new bike in the foreseeable future. But if I were to purchase, it will be the new BMW RR. With the report I read and the combined electronics with German Engineering; That would be the one. PS just wish they would make both lites either one shape or the other...AJ

It really is a toss up, im not too concerned on good value, compare the price to the others if you upgraded the standard parts on say the R1 to the same quality standard in breaks, wheels and shocks.

how much would the price really differ then?

For your intended use, buy an R1. I own an 1199 and I absolutely love it but it is not comfortable and unless you buy a complete exhaust you can expect to have a hard time holding a steady speed if you're at 4700 rpms. I like it because it's sexy as F and it's my purdy bike, but again it's not sensible and is designed straight up for the track. In the next year or two I will be buying an R6 for a commuter/mess around bike.

I assume you mean "brakes"? But the R1 is about $4k cheaper than the standard 1199.

I dont believe comfort to be an issue. I have "Buns-O-Steel"

My bad. so it would cost more to bring the R1 up to the spec of the 1199, and you'll still be lacking all of the electronics and such...

To answer your question, there's no denying Ducati makes sexy looking motorcycles, but since the bike will be used as a commuter with track days sprinkled in the mix I'd also look at the Triumph Street and Speed Triples. The triple combines the best qualities of the twin(torque) and inline four(top end) motors. The Triumphs aren't as sexy as Ducati's, but they'll put a grin on your face weather your commuting or railing the back roads.

The Speed has stupid amounts of torque everywhere. It pulls like a freight train, and has awesome brakes to slow it down. It does have a controversial looks though. Some love it, some hate it. Can't post my pics from work, but there's one in my profile.

Aprilia RSV4 Factory. Handles like a 600, fine Italian craftsmanship, top quality parts. That'd be my current bike of choice if I got to buy a new bike.

It depends on where your at in riding.....get there and back....or......the feeling that you get when roll the power on on a deserted road and feel the stump pulling power of the big twin screaming for for speed as you cleanly exit a corner and line up for the next.... man and machine ONE.....the soul is Italian........but then again you could just ride one of the soul less jap bastards day after day after day......
