Since my bike is not liquid-cooled it runs cold when it's cold and/or raining outside. I've had duct tape covering the oil cooler for the past month or so, which allows the oil temp to reach 200 deg F after riding just over 10 miles when it's about 45 deg F outside. I got tired of the duct tape and rigged this up from an old Vermont license plate and safety wire - hopefully will protect the cooling fins for some electronic thingy and the front valve cover: (I live on a dirt road) ![]() Post up a photo of your redneck engineering projects! |

I just don't document it.. So.... The next best thing. This was mine... Pretty bastardised... (The "tool box thing" in the back was the gas tank, but not sure if you can see it... The light through the roof was just drilled and stuck in (No gasket or anything) Had to start with a screwdriver (Not in the key hole, but under the hood LOL) Man this rig was ghetto... Great offroad truck though... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() My personal favorite... ![]() |

| WMRRA Qualifier Joined: Jul 2009 From: Corvallis, OR I Ride: 08 Hypervibrator | What do you work on? I was an apprentice aircraft mechanic at a small shop in SC until my neck gave out. Worked on lots of vintage stuff and of course did an annual on a 172 like every week or 2 Here's a pic of the Helio Stallion I did a little work on - serial #001 ![]() For all you non-aircraft folks out there...did you know that it is common courtesy for a mechanic to go for a flight with the pilot in the aircraft you just worked on? I lived through all of mine Yeah baby, I got to go for a ride in all those cool planes! (except the RV6 and the Swift |

Honestly there is no way to say all of the planes that I have worked on. I did annual inspections on airplane engined airboats, hot air balloons, 1940's Grumman amphibious aircraft, '40's PBY Catalinas, DeHavilland Beavers, Otters, single and twin. I worked on Robins, Stinsons, Mooneys, Tigers, Fokkers, Funk, Bushmaster's, Many, many kitplanes and experimentals, every Cessna model ever built, every piper model as well. Lear Jets, All the way to 777 Boeing and A330 aircraft. Today I maintain 767-300's and 757-200/-300, Airbus A319/320's. My favorites are the Grumman Goose and Widgeon. This aircraft is a Widgeon, which I rebuilt through my shop in Alaska. It was a huge job and cost over a hundred thousand to finish. Steve Harvey owns it to this day. ![]() This guy brought his cub in a couple of times but I never personally worked it. Sweet vid.

| MotoGP Champion | 5 and 6 foot Landing/TO's are easy to get with a Cub. That is a Piper PA-18 (approx '78 vintage) It has "Tundra tires" (illegal today to buy, yet grandfathered if already STC'd) It is a 160 HP Lycoming engine, fixed pitch 80" long "Borer" prop and STOL leading edge. The landing gear are manufactured by F. Attley Dodge and are lengthened like 8 inches from stock. This plane is actually quite common for Alaska. But interestingly they take on a personality where they are unique to a A/C wrench. The take off and landing competition in Gulkana (airshow) was loads of fun til 0 ft rollouts and take offs were common. Can't get better than that! |

I *never had a mechanic go up with me *ever after an annual or *any interval of scheduled maintenance. Ever. Or even offer. Usually it was those of us who were just hanging around couch surfing at the flying club that would take it for a few laps in the pattern to test it before someone else got in. Just for something to do. |

I have flown along with fresh annuals and post majors, yet I have been far to busy to do so, many more times. To stay with the redneck engineering thread title, I had a fellow who was an anti government guy. He did things which weren't legal and would ask me to sign them off. He installed a plywood baggage area in his TaylorCraft. The rudder cables were rubbing along the sides of the plywood. I told him how to fix it so it would be safe and he came back a few hours later with small toy cars hose clamped to the cables so they would roll along the sides of the baggage compt. sides. He eventually fixed it correctly, but it was like dealing with a child.

| MotoGP Champion | There is nothing there to adjust, it is a staged event. The carb is centered beneath the engine and the ignition is inside the cowl behind the engine. But the J3 Cubs are awesome, that one is a 1943 model. |
