Well the bossman said he didn't need me today, so I headed out to catch another dam on the Dam Tour. Linky here I picked Pinto dam because I could get to it by extending the three pass blast trip out a bit, and Clackamas had been asking about the Stevens and Blewett conditions. Got out about 9:30-10, and headed for Stevens. The pavement is pretty nasty around the summit, but clear of sand and gravel. It was a balmy 46 degrees when I got this shot. Hard to tell really, but I stopped here to write my name in the snow. The weather most of the day was beautiful. The grade on Hwy 2 out of Orondo. Got this all to myself on the way out. Pinto Dam. 3 down. Hwy 17 runs along the right of the lake seen here. This is one of my favorite roads. Nice sweepers and amazing scenery. On the downside, I almost always see LEO's along here. Today was no exception. Dry Falls. Ten times bigger than Niagra. Geologists think it was created by a series of floods from Lake Missoula during the last ice age. I've always thought it would make an interesting ride to follow the path of the flooding and check out some of the geologic features it created. But then I'm geeky like that. That big ass boulder is a glacial erratic. Basically it's a rock that got trapped in a glacier and was carried off in an iceberg during the flooding. When the iceberg melted enough, it dropped the boulder here. Cool bluffs. It may not be twisty, but it has it's own appeal. As I didn't relish the idea of riding 2 in the rain at night, I cut across Blewett pass to 90 on the way home. Blewett was clear and clean all the way across. I managed to get between the herds of cages and got a nice romp in on the way. |
