Okay, we have LONG summer nights, and a decent amount of people (like me) have Friday off for a 3-day holiday weekend, so that's the formula for me to FINALLY get my butt to Fossil! And I'm sure afterwards my butt is going to be seriously SORE! ![]() Fossil veteran Diana is planning the route for us, and recommended that we meet at the Chevron at Hwy 212/224 & I-205 Meet at 8:40, Kickstands up at 9am. From what I understand, this is a ~400 mile ride. And it's gonna be HOTT out, so this ain't a sissy ride. But I also hear that the twisties are so worth it. I've only ever done it in my M3, so I'm looking forward to doing it on two wheels. Who's in? ![]() Oh, the pace: Yes, there are going to be plenty of cops out for the Holiday weekend. That said, we'll play it somewhat cool on the straights, and save the real fun for the twisties. I'd definitely say medium to quick in the twisties. As always, we want riders to ride within their comfort and safety envelope. If someone is railing the corners faster than me, more power to them. And I don't want or expect riders that aren't comfortable to keep up with me in the corners. But we'll regroup at all major turns and check on riders if we don't see headlights catch up to us after a series of twisties. My overall feel is that a ride this long and demanding probably isn't the best place for a newer rider. I'm open to discussion; but with this many miles to cover it might be a bit too demanding of a day for a less experienced rider. Last edited by trayson; 07-02-2009 at 08:46 AM.. |

Eastern Oregon roads eat tires pretty enthusiastically and I have seen many people end up in Fossil with cords showing...and they still had to get home! Oh yea - Will top off in Estacada. It is around 110 miles to Maupin and then another 100 into Fossil. Last edited by Diana; 07-01-2009 at 05:59 PM.. |

| Moderator ![]() | ![]() Watch out for all the frikkin traffic from 224 past Timothy lake to 26.. Wamic Market road is a kick.. Watch out for a blue S-Blazer east of Maupin... I guess he is a county guy or somethin'. Don't think he's all that jazzed to pick up speeders though.. I was......uh.....movin' when I went by him on Bakeoven rd.. 218 is in about as good a shape as I've seen it. There is that one 180 degree right hander just short of Fossil that will have some gravel on it though. |

What time is the absolute must have kickstands up and be moving time? I'm going to be free on Friday since I'm able to take my roommate up to Seattle Thursday night. I'll see if I can make this. I sold my Sidi streetburners and will require my new Sidi Vertigos before I am comfortable riding too much. So if I don't have my new boots and back protector in time, then I probably won't show up. Otherwise I'll definitely try to be there. |

Need to go out that way for 2 days to spend more time on "better" roads. |

I wore the edges down at PIR, but the center still has tons. The edges arn't gone, but if there are a ton of good twisties, I might finish them off. Edges are at the wear bar. What do u think? |

I don't really have much say anyway, as I won't be on the ride. Have Fun, Stay Safe, Avoid LEO. | |

Ultimately it is your choice but I ask you to think about your own safety as well as the rest of the group before making your decision. It can get pretty remote out there and cell service is non-existant at times. If I even remotely think my tires are unsafe I change them. A few years back my husband said "they should be fine for one more ride". They weren't, and we ended up with a crumpled bike alongside the road. Fortunately he came out unscathed, but that is my reminder whenever in doubt. There will be more rides to Fossil this year. |

| Pit Crew Joined: May 2008 From: Vancouver WA I Ride: 2005 Kawi ZX-6R 636 | ![]() #2 = seems to be going around #3 = it wasn't as bad as you'd think, and that's coming from someone that did it in full leather. #4 = we saw one cop in the morning going the other way that did nothing, then didn't see another cop until we were slabbing it home on Hwy 26 between Govy and Gresham. The ride was awesome. Started out w/ 5 of us until Diana decided to go explore on her own, leaving 4 of us to rally over to Fossil. Pace was awesome, good guys, great lunch, and NO INCIDENTS OR DRAMA whatsoever! haha! Although by Govt Camp, I was ready to be teleported home. If I include to/from my house in Vancouver, I logged 415 miles today. But so very worth it. EDIT: Diana, thanks for leading us through the morning. You did a great job and everyone thought the pace was great and complimented the job you did. Hope you had fun exploring! |
