| Training Wheels Joined: Jan 2008 From: Portland Oregon I Ride: Suzuki SV 650 N | First of all I want to say speedy recovery to Marshall. I don't know you but it sure sucked reading about your accident! As far as this next part goes, I thought long and hard about what I'm going to say (even turned my computer off last night so as not to respond in haste).......... I find this quote (below) to be truly distasteful. This is a small rural fire department and I venture to say that most of the guys on that department came running to help when they got the page. The reason I said "came running" instead of "hopped in the truck" is that more than likely this is a volunteer department. These guys had to drop what they were doing to attend to someone they didn't know. These guys deserve a big thank you! We all need to take into consideration that most of our rides on the weekends take us through small towns with volunteer departments. When we have an accident they leave their BBQ or whatever they are doing to come attend to us. The truly DISRESPECTFUL part of this whole incident is this quote. I think the OP should think twice before saying silly things on subjects that he apparently hasn't taken into consideration! "To make the matter worse, some clown of the Glaston Fire Dept, posted the video in Youtube.....Which his dad discover yesterday. Actions are been taken against the Fire Dept for such a direspectful act. They already know who posted it. His dad wanted me to post it here....so evey one see, this was no joke." | Training Wheels Joined: Jun 2009 From: Beaverton OR I Ride: SV650 S '01 | First of all and most important, get well Marshall. I’m really sorry for what happen. I was on that ride my self and let me tell you, I was not having a good time when we did the second lap to the Lake. I was the second to the last rider and I was having a hard time on the curves, the way the sun was hitting, the shadows of the trees on and me not knowing that road (it was the 1st time that I have ride there) and trying to keep up was not a good mix. I make a signal to the last guy to pass me so that I won’t be holding him back. Right after he passed me I did as many people have mention and advised before “My own ride”. I’m still a newbie and I knew I was not able to ride as the experienced ones in that ride, I got way behind. By the time that I got to meet up with the rest of the group they may have been waiting for me for a wile since I was riding on the speed limit. I do feel really bad, because he (Marshall) must have gone down in front of me, but because I was sooooo far behind I did not even got to neither see him nor hear him. I have my heart on a fist, I am not pointing fingers or blaming anyone for anything, I am just saying that I feel bad that I was not there to help and that this unfortunate even has teach me a good lesson… it could have been anyone of us the one in the ditch… Again, my apologies Marshall and my best wishes for you to get better soon. As far as the video goes (Sorry I was not going to say anything about this but it touches to close to home) I can see why Marshall’s family can be upset about it. That is not a good feeling when you see or hear a member of your family screaming and in pain and for everyone to see it (I have been there unfortunately) I don’t believe there is anything wrong for them to document what they did on the rescue etc… for training purposes or for them to review it later as of what to do and not to do kind of thing… but if they wanted to release or to post it on a public access site they should consider asking for permission… my 2 cents… |

| Training Wheels Joined: Jul 2008 From: Vancouver I Ride: Triumph | This is exactly why I avoid group rides for the most part. I've been riding street for over 35 years and consider myself experienced and competent. Being held back by slower inexperienced riders is not "riding my own ride". Screaming through twisties trying to keep up with faster bikes/riders is not "riding my own ride". I'll continue to ride solo most of the time and truly ride my own ride. I don't know you Marshall, but heal quickly and get back in the saddle. And, "ride your own ride...safely". |

| Zone Head Joined: Mar 2008 From: Beaverton, OR - CLAY I Ride: K6 GSXR 1K | I'm getting pretty pissed right now.. First - Marshman - GET BETTER! FEEL better... you are a great guy to know and get to know better - I am aware of a couple people that mentioned you by name shortly after I met you as someone that they wanted to ride with, hang out with etc... that's awesome man! you make a positive impact where you go! ![]() EVERYBODY S L O W THE @#%* DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I SAW someone cross the yellow yesterday (apologies to that person - but I am using it as an example) I approached him... I said - 'what happened' (after isolating the incident and getting him to actually admit to it)... his answer was immediate, clear and (I believe 100% honest and true)... "The guy in front of me got spooked at something and he braked hard. I had to brake hard and swerve to avoid hitting him." THERE ARE no EXCUSES. none. get off his ass. [cool thing happened next tho - we turned this into an opportunity for the guy I approached to go approach the guy in front of him about his maneuver. As far as I know-all went well with that discussion too - another 'point' - CALL PEOPLE on things you see, do NOT be afraid to approach anyone and say 'it looked like something went wrong - what happened?' EVERYONE (including me, and any other 'experienced' rider) SHOULD BE open to any and all questions/comments and GOD FORBID we actually HEAR something helpful! (Thanks DAVE!!!!!)] If someone approaches you and asks why you crossed the yellow lines (or ran wide on a left and ended up in a ditch) -it's a trick question... There are very very very very very... few 'acceptable' answers to that question that will result in ANYTHING other than these next words: "Then SLOW THE $^%* DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" -nothing but love.... I have met Marshall - AWESOME guy... Want to meet his dad - he sounds like a HELL of a guy to be able to NOT want to KILL someone on that ride that left his son... damn - those screams apologies to anyone that was butt hurt by any of my comments.... I know both will take some time. It saddens me to know this happened and in turn strengthens my commitment to those that ride with me or those that I ride with; to avoid this at all costs, which are minor in comparison. All my best to you, your family, and friends. Take care, be careful, and safe travels always… |

| Zone Head Joined: Jan 2007 From: Lake Osghetto, OR I Ride: whenever I can | I haven't met Marshall, but I'm glad he will be OK and recover in the end. Anytime you start splitting up groups in the middle of a ride and throw out the "Designated Leader/Sweep" positions and don't have a head count, you are taking the chance on losing someone. Even if everyone is trying to keep someone in their mirror, there are going to be times when they're not visible. And if you're only looking for the "headlight" it is possible to lose a rider in between, because 90% of the headlights look the same in a mirror, at speed, at distance and on a straight stretch. How many people actually look and make sure its still the red FZ6 behind them and not some other bike? Two basic imperative things on any group ride: 1. Head count at the beginning, and again at all stops or major turns 2. If someone leaves the group for any reason, they let someone know You can't keep track of everyone if you don't know how many "everyone" is. Last edited by SpeedGeek; 07-02-2009 at 11:51 AM.. |

| Zone Head Joined: Feb 2008 From: Portland, Oregon I Ride: '07 GSXR-750 | Just wanted to share an experience I had in 2005. We were on a big group ride way out in butt fuck egypt (aufderhide) I was riding with the slower group towards the rear while the faster peeps had taken off. A friend of mine had started the ride with them and had long since left me behind. The 50 mile road went well and we all met up at the end to gas up and head back to Portlad. There must have been at least 15-20 of us. When I pulled into the station, I gassed up, hydrated and looked around for my friends. I noticed one of then wasnt there. I looked around some more and asked a few others and no one had seen her since we started the ride. After a stupid lengthy debate by the group as to where she might be, a few of us went back the way we came to see if something had happened. Sure enough about halfway through we found her lying on the side of the road. Medics had already arrived thanks to a forrestry service worker with a radio. What happened was when she took off with the faster group, she had fallen off the pace and ended up riding solo in between the fast and slow group. On a downhill decreasing radius turn, she tucked the front and went sailing off into the woods, about 50 feet into and 30 feet down a steep embankment covered by trees and bushes. When the slow group rode past she was still down in there screaming for help and the scrape marks were not visible at 50mph. She ended up climbing up the embankment herself with one good leg and one good arm and waited in the hot sun, with her head on the fog line hoping someone would find her. Ended up making a good recovery but I learned a few things from that episode. Keep track of your buddies at every stop. Dont ride alone in a group. If you fall off the faster pace, slow down till the guys behind catch up and ride with them. When you re-group, make sure everybody is there before you move on. Condolences to Marshall. I hope he heals up and keeps riding. |

Anyway, I hope Marshall heals up, I may have met him once at Ava's, but not sure... It would be nice if we had more noob-friendly rides. I know Clay (Soil) runs one almost every Tuesday, but there are 6 more good days to ride every week! Most of the experienced riders go on group rides to ride hard, so I understand how they don't like to run noob rides that often. But it would be nice... My buddy (Bolestuff) is running one Friday that will be a nice slow pace and nobody will be left behind.

The FD pulled the video and has spoken with family and apologized. Marshall has a severly broken left leg (about 2 inches below hip) and left forarm - plates, screws- whole bit. Marshall's words of wisdom to everyone: 'slow down - don't worry about keeping up' "thanks for everyone's concern and thinking of me in my time of need. I'm doing fine. I promise to NEVER do that again! I'm going to be off a bike for a long long time. " |

| HondaKilla Joined: Jan 2008 From: Hillsburrito, OR I Ride: Like a duc wrangler | Sorry to hear about the mishap Marshal, it took a broken hand for me to figure out just what i was getting into, and i'm sorry to see this was a bit more serious even bones will heel, fear not. Since the topic of “group safety” was brought up though, I think everyone here has had the moment (either riding sweep, or just tired of being held up) that when a single person is holding up the rest of the group they let things slip, and pick it up and simply hope the less experienced people will keep the slower pace. This is the PERFECT example of how THAT DOESN’T WORK!!!! Most riders looking to learn are also learning what pace they are comfortable with (this is why the marshal’s on track days aren’t literally lapping their students). The first time I did the “pre-ride” for Tuesday night coffee, I volunteered to ride sweep for the group, and after Skyline I never saw Soil again not at the stop signs or anything! If you’re taking care of a group that means everyone watches everyone!! Front to back! “The pace” is your own testosterone, please don’t spill it on anyone else…. |

Ed, buddy I know what your saying in reference to the ripple brook ride, but respectfully lets keep the thread about the well being of Marshal and his family and for a quick recovery. I can see how you can be angry about the situation because the daggers were thrown at you from neil and now this comes around but being that Marshals dad is going to view this thread as well as Marshal, lets try and keep a positive spin on a tragic event in which took place so when they do view this thread they can see the immense amount of love a support that comes from the people of this thread and the massive amounts of apologize that come from those in which were on that particular ride. So though I do respect your opinion and see where your coming from with your post..PM him and keep it off this thread ya know? Wanna keep everything positive in here for him and his family please

| MotoGP Champion | If I have to keep riders in my mirrors at all times, I'm going to stop going on group rides. I am not responsible for the person in front of me or in back of me. I am responsible for stopping at any intersections to be sure they know where to turn and I expect them to do the same for me. If a rider does not arrive behind me in an appropriatre amount of time, I will investigate. |

As for everyone else, just in case any of you have something to say, I, didn't even know the guy. I, wasnt even with that group at the exact moment that happened. I, wasn't even the leader neither the sweeper. Finally, I, and two more got divided from the rest of the group right after the exit of Hag Lake for almost two hours. So, with all the circumtances above, I'm I going to miss someone??? The answer is NO. Still, I started this post accepting responsability for what happened. NOT as an "hey I'm the man", but as a messege to all of "when we out there, we are a team, lets act like one". Thanks. Last edited by BoricuaBusa; 07-02-2009 at 05:58 PM..
