8 days and counting to my Cali Ride!!!!
Yep! Saturday the 18th in the wee hours of the morning I will be heading to Cali along the Oregon/Cali coast!! Hwy 101 / Hwy 1.

If anybody would like to tag along for how ever long they can/would like too, please feel free to come enjoy!!! I'll be leaving my place around 6am. will probably take a food break in Newport and then moving down the coast

Any advice from peeps that have ridden this is totally welcome...but, please...NO posts about "you should do this road, or that road" the route is set, I wanna see and take the coast, period! Unless there are road hazards (like it's missing)

1st stop: San Francisco

Then on to Santa Monica!

The routes:

PDX to San Fran:

San Fran to Santa Monica:

Thats almost the exact route I took back in Jan.

You're going to enjoy it. Wish I could come with ya...... Too bad I don't get like 11mo of paid vacation a year. Then I could do all the trips I want to.

Logan,

When do you plan on coming back?
I don't have anything going on and I've been looking for an excuse to experience some of those northern california roads. I wouldn't mind tagging along at least on Saturday, then turn around and come home on Sunday. I'll think about it.

yeahhhhh I can understand; however, some of us where looking to hook up with you on the way back as well.
If you come up with an aproximate return timeframe, some of us will be kool to zip back up the 1/ 101 with ya.

I may go down as far as Sand City and meet up with Dan Kyle for a day.
Then zip back to E Bay to hang out with some of my pals from the T-Mobile Project.

I can then catch you and whom ever on the back side (return trip LOL).

Something to think about anywayzzz.

Happy Weekend!

Skyline is really great Alice's is fantastic, staff is very.... friendly!
Hwy9 is a great place.
I dig Los GAtos, a great place to hang and drink coffee n' enjoy the beauty of the area.

I have taken the trip both ways SAN to PDX Uhaul/ Sportscar/ and general Bay Area with RC51 the and it is incredible.

I haven't done 36 or Alpine/Pescadero, but Hwy 9/35/84 are some of my favorite twisties in the Bay. I grew up in the east bay, so my personal favorite is probably Grizzly Peak/east bay Skyline/Redwood/Palomares. I used to do a loop down from Berkeley to Fremont that way, then head across the bottom of the bay over to Hwy 9 and make my way up the peninsula, then back across the bridge back home. Or some other form of that when I lived in Sunnyvale and worked at a shop in Santa Clara.

I'd already planned on doing this same route, leaving on the same day ironically. My final destination is the Bay Area for work training, but I'd be happy to show you some of the roads mentioned, Logan. Oh, and I didn't realize your time frame, but I'll be leaving the Bay to head back up the following Saturday (the 25th), so if you are interested in staying in the area an extra day, having someone to ride back with would be nice.

Oh, and sorry if I'm "not allowed" to post here because I'm from Salem. A friend from Milwaukie PMed me a link to this thread, so sue me.

Can't get anything motorized on the beach in Pismo since the early 80's, you must mean Oceano. Honestly I grew up on those dunes and I feel safer on the street. At least on the street I know which way traffic is coming from.

Your route looks pretty good Logan. From SF down you might want to make a few changes though.

Once you leave Pismo Beach your route is a total slab fest all the way south. If you look at routing down hwy 1 from Pismo to where it rejoins 101 in the Buelton area you will enjoy it alot more. It's more coastal and takes you through the local scenery.

Consider giving up the coast view from Gaviota to Santa Barbara. Yeah it's right on the ocean but believe me, nothing to see. Take hwy 154 or if you do the above mentioned change go 246 to 154, much better and quicker.

While you are in the area from Pismo to Buelton you MUST stop for a steak. It's a local thing to the area as to how they are cooked. I told my wife before we went on vacation there a few years back that I was taking her out for the best meal of her life while we were there 3 years later she still raves about the food she got.. Jocko's in Nipomo, The Far Western in Guadalupe, The Hitchen post in Casmailia or Buelton, AJ Spurs, Call ahead for reservations and make sure they are "firing the pit", you will not be disappointed.

On hwy 246 you will fine a little tourist town called Solvang, cute place if you're into Dutch style anything.

Just so you can say you went there.... From 101 take hwy 154 to Figaroa(sp?) mtn road, turn left go to the tight hair pin turn to the right. Stop. Go back to the non-descript brick and iron gate that will now be on your right. stop again. take a picture of yourself and the gate to wacko jacko's neverland ranch, save pic and return to your trip.

If you are interested in making it a 2 day trip from SF to the LA area pm me. I can probably hook you up with a place to overnight in Santa Maria. It won't be a five star suite or anything but it'll be a clean bed and a hot shower.

Last note, I suspect it will be rather warm from SF down to San Luis Obispo. Shortly after you pass the first Avila Beach exit and as you pass the second one the temps will drop rapidly. Expect maybe 90+ through San Luis and 70's along the coast.

Oh, and as you travel through San Luis, you MUST stop and pee at the Madonna Inn. Don't ask, just make sure you relieve yourself there. Can't miss the place just look for the pink sign on the west side of the hwy

I did that run last year, and i hope to run it again later this summer.

You really should take a third day.

When you get past the redwoods on 101, you will come to California hwy 20, take it inland to Hwy 16, that one south to the freeway into the bay area, keep on the north side on the bay, then rejoin 101 to go across the golden hate.

Trust me on this, this side track is well worth the time, I would stay the first night in Eureka, then head out.

I hope you are going down Oregon 199, it's yet another "E" ticket must ride.

Logan. make sure we get to ride at least once since you'll be coming here! its been far too long since we shared a good ride.

If youre going to be riding that long you should find a place to get some shut eye. it gets really sore and tiring after about 8 or 9 hours straight. bring rain gear and warm clothing.. I have a full set of electric liners and that saved my butt in the cold. make sure you have rain ex wipes for your visor! because it may be sunny in portland when you leave but down south there could be a thunderstorm. I got caught in a thunderstorm 2/3 times this summer. i couldnt see a THING on the road. i tried lifting up my visor and all i got out of that was a face full of cold rain that felt like ice in my face.

I've been up and down from portland to SF 3 times on my bike already and in august will be my 4th trip going back up and coming back down. i expect to be doing at least 2 more trips this year. i had about 7 or 8 guys come down half way with me. and about 5 more meet me in redding and we headed down to SF from there.

im gona be out of town on friday saturday and sunday. call me on monday if you wanna go for some twisties! i promise i will wear my gear.

Looks like I'm gonna be solo the whole way, no bites on riding buddies, even part of the way.
