no front brake, no big sticky tire too.
Cruisers are great, I love them, but physics is against them.
YOu slow down the weight all goes to the front, without that front brake, the rear locks up in a panic.

YOu are only as effective braking as the person behind you makes it.

I am always back far enough to see what the person in front of me sees.

A lot of fkd cagers out there will try to fill the hole and create a dual tailgate.

Ok as for our friends who spilt out there, I wish you all the best.
It is part of the price we pay for visibility and enjoyment.

As for my friends on this forum: remember, cruisers have been there forever, and will be there forever, they should be there.
This is in many ways a throwback, so small helmets/ no helmets there was a time when no one wore them. In helmet optional states many riders opt out of helmets. Almost all.

In AZ almost everyone opts out of helmets and protective gear.

I think many people just get feeling good in a group and enjoy the ride, let down their guard and get complacent.

As I mentioned earlier, complacency kills and puts you on the end of the Bathtub Effect (high probability of crash/ the end of your riding days).

Likely many of our fellow riders are more expereinced than I and could teach me a thing or two about riding.

But it is in a pack, with numbers that a false sense of security can over come a group.

Please adjust a bit, and get better, to defend yourself against what happens in front of you. Heal well and I hope for no RIPs.

Best to us all!

yes i have friends from Europe who ride bikes here, and they say the lane dicipline in the USofA is horrible.

I have been to Europe and have to agree.

South Africa has better lane dicisipline than USA and shyte you can get moving down those roadways....!

Obviously they aren't all that great. I was able to avoid getting ran over by 2 cars on the way to Jim's yesterday by observing other traffic, not following too closely, and knowing how to use my brakes and throttle. It sucks this happened and I hope they all are back riding soon but I can't agree with them being great riders when they are riding so tight and "fast" that they can't keep from running over each other. In a group that large, the guys in the back should have been far enough back that they would have had tons of time to stop. But oh, they're great riders que?

And I had nothing to do with any alt accounts. Not how I roll

Driving there was crazy, I was ran off the road several time (in my car) Not sure how safe it would be to ride a bike there. Although I do have a touch of road rage especially from driving there. I know some things I did to get my point across to the person who cut me off probably was not the safest and might have caused more problems. But damn its like 100+ all the time, I am an Oregon Boy.

I don't need to ride with them. People that have rode with them and the group themselves have already stated how they ride. 2 and 2 says that they were riding how they ride and it bit them in the ass. Ride like a dumbass and it'll eventually catch up with you. I figured that one out a year or so ago. Maybe this incident will change their poor riding techniques? Probably not though. It doesn't look as "hard."

As for the last part, I am quite pleased that I can ride well enough to avoid an accident, instead of getting run over and blaming it on an SUV that cut me off.

yeah, I am a bit of a "carry" fan but in ZA (SouthAfrica) I did not have anything. A friend of mine said, "Paul do you carry?" i said, "Not here.", he said, " Well that makes you the only one who isn't!"

I am sure it is a bit overstated but he was driving home (pun) that Rage may get you in a bit of a potential for a ventilated situation with no way out.

Glad a fellow Ore Gun Boy made it Ore Gone ooutta there!

best to ya

i just talked to a buddy who's dad is one of the downed riders, they were an idaho chapter on their way home, suv came up in right lane, got between the front and back of group (because they were spread out enough) and slammed on the brakes, witnesses say the same....

and no they werent riding side by side, they were staggered like any biker knows how to ride in a group, the witness who said they were side by side didnt know of the term staggered so couldnt articulate properly about their formation...

I would unfortunately have to agree with the negatives about how they ride based on what I have seen. They appear to have no regard for pedestrians or other vehicles around them when they ride. Riding two abreast with short following distances at high speed is not safe and will only result in the rest of us being lumped into the same unsafe riding categories as they are.

One thing I think we all need to look at.. sport bikers and cruisers... when someone does something stupid.. call it just that... stunting on the streets for sportbikes.. riding as these guys do for cruisers. I love to ride in a large group but we always practice safe riding habits when we do.. staggered or single file.. sometimes a little faster than we should but not always...

So us folks on cruisers need to call bs when one of our own pulls something stupid.. just as the sportbike riders need to call bs on theirs. Shouldn't be a my side your side kind of thing.

I then wonder if a correction to the news could be requested?

It should be.

Are charges being levied on the SUV driver?

I wave at any and all two-wheeled vehicles as I pass by, Shrek... Good point, but not ALL are here spoutin' hate. I, for one, hope and pray that all of our fallen comrades (from that day and all others) make a full recovery and ride again.

Something is fishy here, roadrage maybe,I don't know but I'd bet there is more to the story than just an accident.
Most of the bikes ridden on club events are not choppers although most of the guys probably own one, they usually have several bikes to chose from.
They do ride fast,we're not talking about a HOG chapter here but the leaders are guys riding since the '60's or '70's not some wet behind the ears punks.
Whether you love or hate 1% clubs there is no denying that these guys are experienced riders that know how to ride in formation.

yeah not sure how, just what i was told in a short phone call, him saying they were staggered could be an attempt to save face as well as the discription of the events, i have read into it and some things dont add up but im not qualified to judge who was at fault so i will stay stand on that i hope they recover and ride again regardless of who is at fault... no im not calling my buddy a liar but i dont care so much as to what happened as much as if his pops is ok..

cruisers and sports will never 100% get along, get over it guys... look at it like this... cruisers are like skaters and sportbikers are like bmx'ers... some get along some dont...

has anyone even considered that this could be a Hells Angels attack or retalliation for something? or another biker gang trying to intimidate their group? just a thought....

I am thinking it would become much larger quickly if the connections were made.

I would hope the cops have looked closely at the SUV driver, don't you?

For the record, most around here are riders... there is a vocal group which are sportbikeriders. I personally enjoy bikes, actually anything with a motor for the most part... so I do respect you represent a majority of riders.

Hope all riders are okay and will ride again some day...but i don't' appreciate how they throw the sport bikers under the bus with the comment of we are not speeding or doing wheelies...they were aiming at sportriders. It seems like a poor excuse for a large accident. questions.. how do you get out braked by a suv? .. and what about proper following distance? and what happened to covering the brake??...sounds like a few bad riders screwed over the whole group.. just my opinion

Update
Update: Idaho Motorcyclist Dies from Injuries Sustained in September 18th Crash on Interstate 5 south of Wilsonville - 10/05/09
A motorcyclist from Coeur d'Alene, Idaho died this morning from injuries sustained in a September 18th multiple vehicle traffic crash south of Wilsonville in the northbound lanes of Interstate 5. Oregon State Police is still continuing the investigation into the crash that injured ten motorcyclists traveling together

DAVID BOWYER, age 44, reportedly died early Monday morning at Legacy Emanuel Hospital where he had been treated since the crash.

Previously released information noted on September 18, 2009 at approximately 2:45 p.m. approximately 26 motorcycles were traveling northbound in the left inside lane near milepost 282 in a formation of two columns when traffic ahead began to come to a stop. The first two motorcycles maneuvered to avoid a collision with a 2005 Toyota 4Runner but many of the following motorcyclists could not react in time and crashed into the sport utility vehicle and into each other. A second vehicle, a 2004 Nissan Pathfinder sport utility vehicle in the center lane was also struck by one of the motorcycles attempting to avoid the collisions.

No other information available at this time.

A link to a previously issued news release is available on our website at:
