VFR Has Fallen....a bit...
So after the long day ride with Clay, Q, James I noticed through the ride my VFR started miss firing and rough idle. So then this morning before school tried to fire the beast up took longer and then it stalled. Fired it up again and lots of missing.....

Had to ride moms bike (02 SV650S with a lowering kit) to school.

I will start trying to diagnose the beast. But for now no rides

Plug is what i thought i just got a fresh set so i will be putting them in. However what makes me wonder is the fact i just replacd them 1k ago..... Regulator/rectifier I replaced at the beginning of the year ($200 from honda). I know the Reg is a common problem.
I do have a dynajet kit install with a twobro's pipe and k&n filter.
I will keep it updated.

Jetting could be off and that would explain the plug issue.

Ooo take this to VFRW too. lots of good insight there. Ok as far as what I can tell you from here is there is a lot of little things to this, one is the vacuum lines are getting hard and brittle and will crack and break which of course will foul it's running, then there's the enriching device that too has been known to cause some trouble every now and then. I'd like to believe since you replaced the RR it's not that, as it wouldn't even turn over if the system wasn't charged, not alone run bad or in different, thinking here has it something to do with the carbs in my csae mine started running some what like yours but with mine it was ready for the 32k service so I button her up to the shop only to find out that one of the carb sinc ports was missing the rubber plug, one of the other ones was cracked so they all got replaced, never ran better after, even though I still did the complete vale inspection carb sic etc..

I installed the jet kit last year and have put about 4k on the bike with the kit(No problems at all).
Here is the weird thing when i first installed the kit i was running lean (poping on deaccel). I turned the pilot screws all out another full turn (yes that is a big step) and it made it a lot better, however i still do have a little poping on deaccel. So it is still on the lean side but the bike has been running great.

I'm hoping to get the plugs in tonight and try again.

Awesome! Here is a little detail about mine. I took off all the vacuums for the "smog system"
(not a cali bike but even the 49 state bikes had some kind of system on them) when i installed the jet kit. It makes the bike run sooooo much better. Mine has 31xxx and i just did a valve service, coolant flush and factor pro shift kit (this gen had bad shift rollers). I like your idea about the vacuum leak. I will check all the plugs and for cracks.

I'm running a little lean with the K/N and a V/H exhaust myself. I hate the popping on decel I just don't have the knowledge to dig in there and screw around with the carbs. As far as the factory pro shift kit, I absolutely love my bike's shifting after installation. Silky smooth and no more false neutrals from first to second.

My latest addition was to go down one tooth in the front when I replaced the chain and sprockets. I lost ten mph off the top end but talk about a neck snapping VFR!

Yeah i just bought new sprockets and kept the gearing the same....but maybe later i will try it. Mine will already lift the front end up. Carb wise I do a lot of work on bikes and all you would have to do to help the poping is turn the pilot screws out a 1/2 turn (richens).
The shift kit is a lot better! however the ...i mean guy who had this bike before me liked to burnout and was hard on the tranny so my 1st-2nd is crunchy

Soil-thank you for your input....

Get a par block off plate or de-par and it will stop the popping.

I don't think the carbed VFRs have the pair valves...

This morning i started the bike and it was still doing its little "lack of running smooth" I kept it running and got it warm. Then shot all the headers with break cleaner and it seems like the rears are not running as hot as the fronts (by very small amount hens miss firing) but they are firing pulled the rear plugs out and air filter. The plugs were black (rich) also I checked all the plugs for the vacuum and they were all intact. I am going to clean the airfilter and do a carb clean (check to make sure a jet did not unscrew itself) i already installed two new plugs in the rear. I will see how it is after that *fingers crossed*

UPDATE!!

So took the carbs off and cleaned everything. Double checked everything.
Bike started and runs but still will bike fire or pop right at 4k. So....it is not fuel the richness has been fixed. However, I hooked the Volt meter up to it while idling and it showed 13.12v.....normal, but when i slowly reved it up to 5k (which the manual say it should increase and be around 14v) it dropped to 12.7-12.9v. I have a stator or Reg/Rec going out. I will perform the tests tomorrow. So im looking a $200-$400 grrrrrr.
Most likely $400 because i just replaced the regulator but then again........

That was also one of my thoughts but the low voltage would cause a coil not to work properly.

Any 3 wire regulator/rectifier will do if you don't wish to buy a new one. Make sure that your battery can pass a load test(schucks will test this) a shot battery will eat up a rectifier quickly. I've got a CPU chiller fan affixed to my rectifier on my 00' to keep temps down as airflow is minimal under that cowling and I removed the paint from the subframe where it mounts for better thermal transfer with thermal paste. 50K miles and not a problem.

Yup i did the stator test and it was fine. I plugged in my old rectifier and it was better. I think i am going to be spending around $270 on this badboy plus gonna get some arctic silver 5.

FIXED IT!!

$90.00......................New Batt. Old one was showing 12.65v. Crazzzy

Runs like a VFR again!!! Even better now that I cleaned the carbs and all of the above.

Thanks for the info.

If it fails......keep it simple.

I've been lurking on this thread cause i like learning mechanical/technical stuff about random bikes. Glad you got it fixed.

Tangent:

You said a regulator/rectifier was $270 I noticed. I remember a friend ordering one for much cheaper, did some research, and found this Super Duty one from Electro Sport for $99 (W/O shipping)

I meant $270 total haha as in Batt and Rectifier. Also beware that if you buy an aftermarket one yes it may be cheaper and you might get lucky with it however i have seen/heard some bad horror stories just because they tried to save some money.

The bike still has some what of a miss when cold around 4k underload(in gear riding). Im thinking new plugs again i only rplaced the rears because i did not replace them last time.
