Motorcycle Camping from Portland?
I would really like to do some small touring trips this summer. A few days at a time. Camping. I've got camping gear but I didn't grow up around Portland and I don't really get the whole reservations system.

Can I just jump on my bike and ride to a general destination, then roll into campsites? Or do I need to be reserving camp sites months in advance?

Can anyone recommend where I should go for a long weekend, heading out of Portland? Memorial Day Weekend is something I'm considering. Curvy roads a plus.

Later in the summer I'd like to take a week long trip.

Thanks!

Let's put it this way, if you don't know where you are going. You get there, an it's full. Go another mile up the road!

Most parks in Oregon (some operated by PGE) are online, check ahead. KOA is also a good one. But if you are looking to 'rough it', hook up with someone familiar. And honestly, there are many here on the board that know what and where, and are probably chomping at the bit to go!!!

Don't be afraid of dirt roads, and check in with BLM. There are fire roads all over Oregon with pull-outs plenty big enough for motorcycle camping. Just keep riding until you find a nice spot.

Holiday weekends are very popular, most good campgrounds will fill up friday or early saturday. If you avoid the holidays it shouldn't be too hard to find a campground that's open. I'm not sure so much on reservations, find a destination first and look into it on a case by case basis. Some don't have any, some have alot of reserved spots. Some are state, some national forest, etc

Join KOA and get a discount for camping and a nice hot shower, laundromat, snack shop and some even have gas.

Don't forget the state park systems (WA, OR & CA) Some even have cabins & yurts. Either way a lot of them have hot showers which is nice after a long day of riding...

I'm up for this when I'm off work.

You should look at Spruce Run Campground about 6-8 miles south of Hwy 26 and 20 miles east of Seaside. No reservations required, and a nice river to swim and bathe in. Also, try Nahalem Falls campground off one of the best riding roads in the state, Miami River Road. I believe it's controlled by Tillamook State Forest, phone 503-842-2545. I don't know if reservations are required there.

I know there are a lot of campgrounds up Hwy 84 east of Portland all the way to Idaho, but I haven't been to most of them (yet). Up near Mt St. Helens and the foothills around it are full of great campgrounds and awesome riding roads. I've been to one of those and loved the ride. Plenty of 25-35 mph corners, and didn't see a cop all day.

Post up when and where you want to go. You'll have plenty of willing friends.

You can usually get campsites when you turn up.

For very popular destinations and/or holiday weekends I'd suggest calling up and booking in advance.

This site CampingRoadTrip.com has all the info in one place, as well as photos (so you can see what you are getting into)

It also has this cool campground locator thing that lets you pick where you want to go, like the town you want to go to, and it'll find campgrounds within a few miles of the town for you. Might be worth a shot.
