I ride on the next road parallel to this over cooper mountain. I work swing and when I ride to work when it's light out, I go over the hill. Guess what I do when it's dark. I go all the way around down tv hwy to murray. That's called good judgement, more lights, no deer, no blind hills..... That's not what this was. I hope they ended up in a better place.

I have stayed out of this thread because I simply have nothing I can contribute on this tragedy, and nothing I can say will make any of this better.

I lifted this from her facebook.

I live right near there and unfortuately felt something drastically wrong when I heard all the sirens. We don't know much except what has been released. Regardless of alcohol or speed of either vehicle, what has been stated was he passed on a double yellow. A double yellow tells you it's not safe to pass there. I know this road well. Will I state I never have passed on a double yellow, no. I do know that on that section of road, I wouldn't pass there in the daytime yet alone at night. To state the truck came from no where is false. It came from the other direction and it sounds like in his proper lane. That double yellow was warning that a vehicle can "come out of no where" so to speak. That's why its a double yellow. If the road designers thought you could see everything safely, it would have been striped differently.
This is very sad and I think the rage comes from everyone feeling this was avoidable. RIP to the riders and best wishes for a rapid and full recovery to the innocent truck occupants.

In before the lock!

Can't say I'm surprised to find another rider death thread turning into an argument. Really though, none of what any of us say is gonna change anything: People do dumb crap, life is random, and people die.

It would be nice to see people focus on how to try and help the survivors or friends and family, that's about the only place any good can still be done. Plus we're a large community, putting together a rider recovery group or hell, a foundation would be a much better use of our time than raging out on a forum thread.

These stories are nothing but a grave reminder to not ride like you're invincible: We should all exercise special caution with the lives of those around us on the road, be it other drivers, or our passengers, on 2 wheels or 4. If we want to take insane risks it's always best to do it alone, or with other consenting adults. We all stand a chance of getting our tickets punched screwing around, but drawing unsuspecting bystanders into our boy racer daydreams is a sure fire way to fuck up a lot of people's lives.

To all those who have commented on my posts on this forum.

* To make an on record statement. I did in fact stumble accross this forum while checking up a few other reports on the incident. I got to this forum through the Portland Tribune site. I wasn't trolling around, I am gathering information for the sake of our friends.

*To another person that commented, I stand corrected, body parts were infact everywhere. My apologies.

ALSO to anyone else I have attacked so viciously, I guess this has all just come to a shock to me. We had just seen him a day before the incident. And of course think about my other friends who were hanging out with him before him and jolene took off. GOSH! I mean I couldn't even fathom the thoughts going through they're minds.

I do honestly know what the family and friends are going through. We just got to see the kids the other day and it was horrible, they were absolutely clueless as to what happend.

On a lighter note, Services are being held for anyone to attend either memorial. Keith Lawsons Memorial will be held thursday and Jolene Berstcher's Memorial Service will be held on Friday.

**NOTE** Today on my way back I saw 3 people make some very balsy moves on the road. I saw a car make a Uturn right in front of us accrossed a double yellow line. I even saw cars coming with-in a foot or two of a person crossing the road. And Twice today I saw where there could have been a nasty accidently involving a bicyclist and a vehicle. People have to slow down on all sorts of levels. Slow down your speed and stop always being in a rush to get places. Slow down your minds, Think about every move you make and actually pay attention. Not only to what your doing but also pay attention to what everyone else around you is doing as well.

This will be my last post, As I no longer need to be in here. For all you riders out there. Just please be carefull!! You have a higher chance of dying.

Probably not.
Why I won't take a passenger. If I make a stupid mistake, well it was only me that got hurt or killed. If I make a mistake with someone else on...

It sounds like this guy was just an A$$hole when it came to riding.

Did you use one of these to get to your conclusion?

You are right. I used that incorrectly, I think I was angry about the mothers life that was lost. From the news account he was reckless however.

anyone have any current press releases of non-rumor information or the accident report?

Was there alcohol? I had heard (Verbally from someone at Tues coffee) that there was, but I have no hard data on this... I'm not trying to throw the rider under the bus, but I just want to try to rationalize why anyone would pass like that, at that spot, and at that time...

I think we've all been there. You get intoxicated with the power, speed and maneuverability of your bike. You feel like a God with the ability to fly around cars in a heartbeat. It's a total rush, it feels like we're breaking the laws of physics compared to what's possible in a car. But that power goes down with a passenger. Add in a little booze and normal inhibiitions go away, but the rush and the desire for it gets more intense. The hard part on the roads is keeping all that under control. It's not easy and that's why stuff like this, tragically, happens.

Another scenario - How many times have you not made the pass, only to find the road was clear? You kick yourself thinking I should have gone for it. Next time you do, only to find a fast moving Dakota coming at you....

RIP rider and passenger. Live for the rush, but do it when you're not going to hurt anyone.

I think that's probably the LAST thing the family would want to see.
