Aw shit.....now I have to find another, less scenic route to get to McKenzie Bridge and the Aufderheide....can't stand the idea of having to slab it down to 20. I have a feeling this summer's going to suck...that is, 1) If we ever get one, and 2) If the Forest Service roads impassable by snow ever clear up.....sigh.

It was very kind of them to give us a heads up. Also nice of them to reconstruct the road.

I understand that road construction like that has to happen in the short time they have good weather. Hopefully next year we'll get an earlier summer and be able to enjoy some pristine new pavement over that route.

The Aufderheide (NF19) between 126 & 58 is a lot of fun. I have got to do that one again this year. I am hoping the delays will still be better then going Hwy 22.

If you take the valley down to Silver Falls, on to Sublimity, it will take some of the sting out of 22, which is actually fun from there to Detroit. I would like to meet you there and go on this Aufderheide you talk so highly of.

Aufderheide... also NF-19 and W. Cascades Scenic Highway

I keep saying I'm going to ride this, but never get around to it. Maybe this year?

We tied to get up to Ape Cave this weekend, and the access from Two Trails (or whatever it's called) is still snowed in and blocked by downed trees. The route fro I-5 through Cougar all the way to Carsen is open and clean, though. WOOHOO!

Not only is it a really nice area to ride in and hang out, there are some cool places to stay for the night. Lots of campgrounds on 126 near McKenzie Bridge, and the Belknapp Hot Springs Resort also very close to the Aufderheide and McKenzie Bridge (which is the name of the local community, really just a wide spot in the road). If neither suits you (campground too rustic? Belknapp too expensive?) there's also this somewhat primitive cabin right on the Aufderheide about halfway between the north end @ 126, and Westfir/Oakridge. Here's a pic of it from our ride last year, when a friend and I stopped in front of it. The bike on the left is her Triumph and on the right is my vintage RD350:

This Road shows as being paved. Does anyone know for sure?

Lee, I asked a friend of mine that grew up in Salem and rides an R1 (moved to Denver last summer...) He knows all those roads and this is our conversation:

Corey sent 5/29/2008 9:48 AM:
you cant "ride" that road

Bill says:
patchy?

Corey sent 5/29/2008 9:48 AM:
lots of gravel, potholes and random traffic

Corey says:
i cant remember there being much for line painting either so cars are all over the place

Bill says:
Thats kinda what I figured when I zoomed in on Google

Corey says:
i took the bike to green peter once to camp... never again! Dangerous road, and I wouldnt ride it on a bike again

Hope this helps.... got a motard? Adventure bike? LOL!
