I Ride: 2007 Yamaha FZ6 "Kurenai Yozora"
Evening Ride Friday 5/30
Forecast shows decent weather for Friday.

Who would be interested in riding after work on Friday for my bike's first real ride?

Meet Time: 4:30pm, leave by 5:00pm
Meet Location: Murrayhill Haggen's parking lot.
9055 SW Murray Blvd.
Beaverton, OR 97008

The pace would be pretty mellow as I need to scrub the tires and break the engine in. I've been trying to stay off the bike as much as possible until I get the opportunity to get it into the country roads where I can open up the throttle and run the engine thru its paces (see: http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm for details on my break in plan). Any pointers on getting the engine broken in nice and proper, please shoot me a PM. I think I might be getting over paranoid about trying to be absolutely perfect with the engine break in. Cause it's all I can really think about is how to make sure I get the rings to seal properly so I can get all the power and life out of my new engine as I can.

Ideally, I'd like to get 80-100 miles in and then return to change the oil and filter. But I don't know where would be a good place to go riding. The easiest thing to do is to just go out on Bald Peak and run some laps around Hagg Lake, but it's more fun to do that with people than by myself.

I'm flexible on the meet and leave time by about 30 minutes or so if people are interested but need time to get to the meet location after they're done with work. After the ride, anyone who is interested would be more than welcome to come back to my place and watch or help me change the oil and filter on the bike for the first time.

I'm off work at 3:30pm. I'll probably stop at Beaverton Honda Yamaha for a filter and Target for oil on my way home. After that the sooner I can get out on the bike the better.

I Ride: because I can't not ride.
Best way to break it in would be to simply hand me the keys...

I'll break it in for you right, and really seat the rings for maximum horsepower and longevity.
I'll even do the oil/filter change for you when I return!

A "proper" break-in requires a mask, crowbar and dark clothes (wait, wrong "break-in"!!).
A proper engine break-in requires high (but not abusive) rpms, hard acceleration and some compression-braking.

I planning an all-day ride for Friday, but if I can't get going as early as I'd like I might join you and show you a good 200-300 mile route of nothing but twisties.

*If you'd like, I can ride over to your place in the morning, break it in for you, and have the oil & filter freshly changed for you as soon as you get home from work!
Let me know...
I'll even dial in your suspension during my ride, and then lube & adjust your chain and tire pressures while I'm doing the oil.
I hand you the key and you're ready to roll with tires fully scrubbed!

Why would you listen to "Motoman" or anyone else when it comes to breaking in your bike? Follow what your manual says. Millions of dollars were sunk, just into R&D, to put that bike on the road. But than again talking about how to break in your bike is along the lines of squid, gear, what is the best tire pressure threads.

Technical editor of Motor Trend wrote about the article you posted. This was couple of years ago. He consulted a Honda power train engineer and I believe the guy more or less said that you should stick to what your manufacturer recommends for the break in procedure. More or less its not all about seating your rings. You need everything that spins or moves around to properly wear in and loosen.

Another option would be to take it to EDR (or some other shop) and have them break it in on the dyno. Then, you can just hop on it and get get get going from the start =)

BTW Mikey, if you ever wonder just what your R6 is capable of, give me the keys and I'll show you what it can do!
Just another free service I'll do just for you!

Re: Engine Break In / OEM Recommendations - Their suggested procedure is more aimed at minimizing warranty claims / protecting their bottom line than what an engine actually requires for maximum power.
Think about it...

What, do you suppose, EDR's engine break in process consists of...?
(which I was going to mention but opted not)
I'll betcha it ain't countless tedious hours on the dyno replicating the factory procedure to the letter.
Think about it...

EDR is an awesome shop and would take my bike to them for anything, except to break in my street bike. What you are trying to say is that minimizing warranty claims, in another words the bike not breaking down in the first year of ownership is a bad thing? If your break in procedure creates warranty claims, it’s somehow good for the motor? I think he will be making payments on that thing for at least a few years so it's in his best interest that the bike lasts as long as possible. Taking it easy for a week or so seems a small price to pay. We are also talking about an FZ6 here that is going to spend most of its days on the street. An additional horse here or there is not going to make any difference, but the reliability of the most intricate parts and most expensive ones to fix (motor, transmission) will.

Yeah, blah blah blah. I said I thought I was getting a bit overly paranoid / touchy about the break in thing.

Bottom line, I just want to treat this new bike with the utmost care. But unfortunately, I'm beginning to think I'm treating it too gingerly given that I've hardly ridden it at all since getting it on Sunday.

This is why I want to ride on Friday. I need to get out and experience what this new bike has to offer. And get over being too protective of it.

So, I'm riding Friday night, at least Lam is going with me, Logan, I really hope you can join us too. I'm going to figure out the route when people show up. I can't remember if I mentioned this in the first post, but I'm feeling like running some laps around Hagg Lake. There is also the possibility of giving Mark a call and going over to the east side to ride with him.

OMG, THAT'S what I've been trying to say!

Thanks Drazen.

But yeah, seriously, I just need to take the bike out, get over trying to be so ginger with it, go easy on it for a week or so, and then go nuts. I think I just put too much thought behind breaking the engine in and got too worried about doing it right.

The only benefit from a gentle break-in is peace of mind... Its a Japanese motor, no matter how it gets broken in, the seat will wear out long before the engine does.

Think about it...
So what does and engine really require for maximum power? It's just an air pump. Beating on it while its breaking in will not magically create more power. R6 mill with milder cams and a few other "midrange punch" tweaks is just what it is...tuned down version of an engine that is made to serve a specific purpose as an afterthought. Think about it...

I would say that one of the most important things is:

CHANGE YOUR OIL SOONER than 600 miles!!!!!!!!!!

No more than 100 miles or so.... dump it and put in fresh oil. The first 100 miles is when the most break in happens - no matter what method you use. Waiting until 600 miles is just too long... you don't want the crap particles floating around in your oil while it is breaking in.

After your first real ride, plan an oil change that night.

It's funny you say that. Cause I've been reading about mods to do for my bike and I've come to the conclusion that the first thing I need to do with this bike is increase the drastically small air flow to the engine.

Oh yeah, this I figured. I was definitely planning on changing the oil way before 600 miles. I had in my mind somewhere between 100 and 200 miles, but I'll make it at or as close to 100 miles as possible.

Mitsubishi Evo engines were notoriously bad about burning oil if not broken in according to the factory recommendations. I have also built a few Honda engines for my brother, who just beat on them from the get go and they ran great for as long as he had them. It just goes to show you that it can be the luck of the draw. It can be hard to account for tolerance stacking, which tends to lead to "looser" or "tighter" motors, netting different power levels from motors that came off the same assembly line.

Unless you're going to keep it for many many years and many tens of thousands of miles, I recommend you run the piss out of it, then sell it to the next person.

Are you really going to retire your motorcycling career with an FZ6?

If so, then I suppose you should baby it.

j/k (sort of).

Anyone who can show up, that would be awesome. Check my first post for time and location. Route is TBD when people arrive.

Basically it will come down to a vote: Do we want to ride together to the east side and get Mitch and Mark to ride around over there or do we want to stick with the west side. I'm leaning towards Hagg Lake if we stick with the west side. And as I mentioned, the pace will be pretty mellow.

As a reminder:
Meet Time: 4:30pm, leave by 5:00pm
Meet Location: Murrayhill Haggen's
9055 SW Murray Blvd.

How to Break in a Motor

Here is Another

And One More

Here are a couple of articles you can read, while it's raining and you can not ride anyway, then make your decision. As Bill says change Oil and Filter after the first 100 miles is very important. From my experience do not baby the engine and do not red line it for the first couple of hundred miles.

Yay! Logan is in!

I should be off work by 3:30. Right now I'm in the truck driving to a worksite in Gresham. You know where I live now, you could come over before the meet time if you're bored. Otherwise, I'll catch you at Haggen's at the meet time.

Would love to go, but not sure I can meet the kickstand up at 5. :( I work on the east side and I'll be getting home depending on traffic, between 4:30-4:50, then swap out car for bike and get over there. I live pretty close, NOT one block, ha ha, but off of Scholls. Can we push it to 5:30, even though I'll try darn hard to be there by 5.
