Two Buells, two Buell dealership teams versus a grid full of Ducatis including the venerable 1098R. A boisterous group of enthusiasts made the ride from Harley-Davidson/Buell of Glendale to witness a monumental showdown. This was the scene this past Sunday for the Formula Twins race at Willow Springs International Speedway. In the time it took for the riders to launch their two-wheeled rockets and make their way through the first corner, one thing was certain: the day would belong to professional Buell racer Shawn Higbee and his new Buell 1125R. Aboard his 1125r, Higbee methodically stretched his initial lead into what turned out to be a definitive 7 second victory, leaving all in attendance with just two thoughts: 1) Wow, and 2) I wonder who will take second. The battle for the final two podium spots came down to Moto Forza's Erick Nolan on his Ducati 1098, and Glendale's Jeff "Slipp" Dixon. These two have battled consistently over the past eight months, with Dixon consistently having the edge. But not this day, as Nolan held off a hard-charging Dixon to hold the position. The rest of the field, as well as the announcers in the tower, could only watch and wonder if anything could slow this newly-found Buell dominance of this traditionally Ducati-led field. Two Buells, two podium finishes, and one thing for certain, these Buells are fast. Congratulations to Shawn Higbee and Bartel's H-D/Buell for fielding and producing a dominant win for Buell, and to Jeff Dixon and the H-D/Buell of Glendale team for another strong performance and podium finish. That was May, now what happens in June? Round 6 of the series kicks off Sunday, June 15th at Willow Springs. All are welcome to witness history in the making for a mere $10.00. Racing begins at 10:30am. Pictures from the weekend, expertly taken by Golden State Glendale H.O.G. Chapter member and photographer Tony Ponce will be available shortly on our website at www.glendaleharley.com. Thanks to all those who participated in the ride. It was great. I also think Mr. Nolan is running a 1098R which is actually 1198cc! The 1125 is one fast motorcycle. |
