  1. Westside Thursday Night Rides - July 30th, 2015 - PHASE III

This will be PHASE III, our third and final run on this route.

Our first two rides on this route have both gone very well. Based on our success, my guess is you're all following 'The Ben Spies Method' training program.
From the objects or animals envisioned in our course map, I'd say some in the group are 'Neo-Impressionists.' Keep it up and keep us all smiling.

Time approximations for selected waypoints are again provided.

I'll take down names before our start and text Lupe's with a Dinner Count. Before we depart we'll assign a 'Sweep.'

    P.S.
If at all possible keep Saturday, August 15th in your schedule. Nearly a year ago we ALL lost a dear friend, Matt Runkle. I don't believe I was ever around Matt when he didn't smile at least once. On August 10th last year it was Matt, Jen and Ty making sure I was O.K. when I went down. God had MUCH MORE IMPORTANT WORK for this MAN.
RIDE WITH US IN MEMORY OF MATT.
He just might be your 'Guardian Angel.'

  2. I am in, and I will try to keep up with you this time :)[IMG]

  3. Shawn,
Our pace won't be radical. You shouldn't worry.
Nice shot of your bike. That"s out at Hagg Lake isn't it?

  4. I am gonna have to miss this one too! I need a dedicated track bike so I don't keep messing with my 636 ;)

  5. I suppose 80 miles in 100 weather is a perfect way to end a day. See you there.

  6. Jamie,
You're right on tomorrows hot weather!
I'm gonna go with Motocross gear with GOOD ARMOR as a base.

  7. We'll miss you Yasar.

For a 'Track Bike' - seriously look at the YZF R6. 2011 would be a good pick. 2008 would be as far back as I would go.
The Suzuki GSX R600 from 2013 or 2014 is another great pick but expensive. Don't consider 2012 or older.

  8. Don't listen to Dick. :p
For a track bike, stick with the 636, go -1/+1 for gearing. Eat R6s for breakfast, and munch on Gixxer 750's for lunch.

  9. On topic:

Unless work is wonky Thursday, I'll be there.
Otherwise see you all at Lupe's!!

  10. Yes it is around Hagg Lake.

Don't listen to ANYONE'S advice for a 'Track Bike.' Investigate for yourself the MotoAmerica & AMA Pro Road racing results for 'near showroom stock classes. THAT will tell you which bikes handle pretty much out of the packing crate.
Want the improve your skills? Put a WELL engineered machine under you. Don't fight with flaws.

Look in these 'near stock classes' which manufacturers are placing in the top ten.

Don't pick a bike on looks or because it has a red seat. Pick it because the PRO'S do VERY WELL on it.

    Done your research yet?

Last Saturday at Mazda Raceway, in the MotoAmerica Superstock 600 class what manufacturer finished 13th 15th and 16th?
What manufacturer had the top 12 finishing positions?
Did you read the rules for this class?

This is REAL WORLD, not how some magazine test rider felt about a bike
Generally you can use that magazine article to wipe your butt.

Sorry but these are the FACTS. Not my 'dumb' opinion on a brand. Sometimes the truth hurts.

You must have something that we all don't then...a pit crew that sets up, maintains, and keeps your bikes running. With all due respect, buying a track motorcycle based on race results of some very well set up, ridden by a professional rider, machine, is probably one of the worst things to do for us common Joes just wanting to get on the track. Get a well sorted, well running, and most importantly one that fits you the best, bike, of any make, is probably what you'd be after.

  14. I will be there tonight. I was following the Ben Spies method eating a pretzel at the Washougal AMA Pro Motocross race last Saturday and got a new Devol key chain. My gear is mesh and I have Cycle Gear heatout.

Advice: start hydrating now, mass quantities of water and other electrolytes.

  15. The key statement here is a WELL engineered machine under you and NOT fight with the flaws of a lesser machine.
Get a start with a known. Pro racing results in the SuperStock 600 class is a good indicator of engineering refinement
Please remember - it's rider feedback that enables support engineers to make the setup work for said rider.

I'm struggling to think of a machine that is not well engineered among the 600cc sport bikes. Professional rider feedback to his engineer for a particular track, day, climate condition, etc., does very little to nothing for your average track rider, especially for our four tracks up here in the NW as there is only local club racing.

Make your way down to the OMRRA races and see all the machines that circulate the track. You'll see the biggest grid and some of the best racing on Ninja 250's. Awesome track bike that one can learn a lot on. Nowhere close to a SuperStock 600 machine but yet one of the best bikes to buy for the track with 70's technology.

You'll be hard pressed to buy an older race machine that would be fighting you with good tires and set up suspension.

  17. Well, this is my laundry room floor at the moment - so I might not make it tonight :(

  18. Plumbers with a jack-hammer actually, they had to bust the foundation to get to a broken sewer line.

  19. I race with a ninja 250 at OMRRA and I agree that on of the best bikes to start racing with. Its so light and and can only go so much fast that sometimes you don't even have to slow it down at corner entry.

I do track days on my newer 636 and its a whole different game and I love it. The stock tires have been limiting me the last couple track days. So I have the Dunlop GPAs mounted on a spare set of wheels for the track. Heading to the Ridge this weekend!

I have come to a realization that to make rapid progress at the track, you need to be riding something that you are not scared to drop. If there is a fear of dropping your beautiful precious bike that you love, the progress is gonna be slow. Hence I am looking for something that I can ride the crap out of and not be afraid of dropping at the track when I am testing my limitations! At my skill level, I don't think I can ride any 600+ Supersport bike to its potential, so I am just looking for the cheapest I can find with some aftermarket suspension already setup.

Pics after I mounter the wheels with the Dunlop GPAs last night!
