Motorcycles Use Extreme Caution...

Discussion in 'Motorcycle Talk' started by Burphel, Oct 6, 2015.

  1. So, I've noticed over the summer that these signs are getting put up at every damn construction zone. Regardless of whether there's something I particularly need to be aware of. It's getting to the point where I ignore the damn things and just use the normal amount of caution when coming into a construction zone. Anybody else noticing this and annoyed? I'm touched by their concern and all, but I'd really rather they save those signs for when there's a big ass patch of chip seal or a diagonal rut or something similar that's a particular hazard to 2-wheelers.

  2. I'd say it's CYA on the contractors part.

  3. Along with Bump in the road some are nothing some are holy mother of god!

  4. We found them everywhere as well while out on a road trip this summer. Agreed.... annoying. Save it for "real" danger. I found myself slowing down and then there was nothing.

  5. I'd rather slow down for nothing, than fly into an unsafe corner without warning.

  6. Makes sense. But it seems to be something new as I haven't noticed so many of them before. Maybe not...

  7. Yes, I would too, for sure. But they did seem to be everywhere... straights included... and there was absolutely nothing in or near the road.

To be a devil's advocate, a friend went around a corner and there was some gravel on a recent road patch. So much that he went down just doing the speed limit. Albeit it was at low speeds, he was not hurt, but the bike was totaled out. A cop was the first person on the scene and told him to contact the city about the lack of signage, as they were they ones who made the road repair, did not clean it up, and did not have signs up. They paid for everything without much if any ado about the whole incident. So yeah, covering your ass is a good way to go and as posted, might as well pay some more attention when these signs pop up.

  9. Yes, a minor inconvenience for potential issues. Point received.

  10. Hmmmm... now that I think about it, we did see more of them in WA...

  11. I appreciate the signs of any sort. It is great to have road crews and local governments cognizent of the hazards to motorcycles.

When I began riding in the 1970s, I don't think anyone ever thought about how a road hazard would affect a bike rider. I would come across the most outrageous hazards and shudder to think how I might have crashed spectacularly if not for my own caution and recognition of dangers. It was WTF time all the time.

Overly cautious sign posting is fine by me these days.

  12. So they repave the road I ride about every day, signs up everywhere. They finish up remove all the sign very nice new black top, but they put gravel on the shoulder, cars run up on the shoulder kick the gravel out (in the blind turns). Yep the signs help a lot...

  13. have to be careful not paying attention to signs. one time going down 101 I wasn't paying attention & it turned out the signs were indicating gravel road ahead. That was the last thing I'd expected to see - the 101 HIGHWAY turning into gravel!!! My eyes nearly popped out of my head when I saw the pavement turning into gravel ahead! Dirtbiking when I was a kid saved me from wiping out when I hit the gravel going over 40 on a 550lb bike...

Those signs are nice, but I would rather see what the hazard is, for instance "Deep Gravel", "Rough Pavement", "No Pavement" "Sand or Gravel at Truck Crossings", or other useful info.

  15. I think some of ya are misunderstanding. I've seen these before for years. And appreciated them. My problem is it seems like they're being used at every construction zone regardless, or maybe just being stuck up when it'll be part of the project at some point, but not flipped/covered when they don't apply. Which kinda makes them pointless. And yeah, I totally concur with Dusty - I'd rather see signs that tell me what I should be watching for.
