1972 Honda XL250
....so its time for a project. The pic does make the bike look nicer than it is but for just over three ponies I should be able to recover my money if it turns out to be a lemon. My plan, currently, is to budget for around a monkey to put it back close to original form rather than a hack.

I got it as a total non-runner from a lad who was keen to get it going so he could ride around his farm but lost interest. So far I've;
Drained the oil - there actually wasn't any,
checked the oil filter gauze - pretty clean,
attempted to check the oil spinner - no luck getting into it,
fogged the cylinder and filled sump with oil,
found the motor turns freely by hand,
found there was a missing camshaft oil seal and valve adjustment screw,
extensively looked for missing adjustment screw - luckily it was not inside the motor,
turned the cam 180 degrees to its correct position,
checked the cam timing (thanks DR),
adjusted the valve clearances,
checked the ignition timing and points gap,
soldered the broken wire back on the ignition coil,
gapped the plug to spec,
plugged all the correct wires back together - have spark!
cleaned the carb up a bit,
adjusted the bowl float height,
rigged a temp fuel line and tank - lol pvc tube and funnel,
kicked,
kicked,
kicked.........................and kicked until I was just about to give up. Yahoo!!!!!!!! We have a runner! It ran for a few minutes which was as long the fuel lasted, most of which was pissing out the bowl seal.

Now it is time to start shelling money out hand over fist. 1st is a carb re-build kit followed by a kick start lever and not a cranked out brake lever with all the spline stripped out. Next is a drive chain and better temp fuel tank. If the motor turns out to be viable I'll have a project on my hands. Not an overnight project though.

If there is anyone who has misc parts laying around that you'd forgotten you had please get in touch. Thanks.

Cool project. One of my Desert racers was a XL-250. No suspension travel and heavy.
But you could NOT kill it! I miss it. I rode my 1st Mattawa 100 on it.

Thanks Ripp'n. You, DR and few others here are inspirational motorcycle enthusiasts that drive my desire to better understand the heritage of the sport I love so much. I would have loved to live in the golden age of motorcycling but alas I was born into the plastic clad, technically advanced and easy to ride rockets of today. Would love to do an old Brit cafe at some point too.

I'm hoping this is a good bike. Bullet proof, fun and cool are familiar words used to describe this bike when I was researching it.

Thanks for the great pic CrownRoyal. I really want to get out and see a bit more of WA than that achieved on a modern sport bike. I've been thinking about projects and dual sports for a while and these seems like a good chance to do both at the same time with one bike.

I Ride: 2003 Copper SV1K
I've got a 1974 version in my shop, with two or three engines and boxes of NOS parts. There is also a bored, stroked, and PowRoll cammed engine too. Dad used to race these and beat 500 singles with it back in the 70's and early 80's. Still his parts, but just recently he started talking about clearing house. Might be willing to part with what you need, send me a list.

Like I told Andy, I need to get with my Dad and see what he wants to get rid of. He still has his racer and will need some parts, but whatever I have that Andy doesn't claim I would be glad to let you in on.

BTW, I've got a vintage Bassani pipe for mine. Classic and loud! I'll get some pics of the beast tonight.

Well my first purchase turned up this afternoon. Wow what a difference in how easy it was to kick and start.

Andy, I will check the depth of kicker knuckle engagment, on my kicker shaft... your's looks a bit shallow...Red, any insight? I understand, it is important to fully engage the gears behind the case on the kick starter, BEFORE the firm boot down.

You are right it is not right but for the price I managed to get it for I might be able to live with a bit of modifying. It seems from my limited research on ebay so far there seems to be a tendency to list things as fitting or coming off a 1972 in order to push up the price. Buyer beware indeed. If it is listed, it easy to tell from the engine number. SL for the K0 72-73 Motorsport. XL for later years.
