Now it starts. Resto 93 CBR900RR
I picked this up on 4-27-12. I wanted something I could ride two up. I know it's not the best for 2upin, but I like it and it'll work great when I'm done.

I took some pics before I even wiped the dust off. I didn't want to touch it till I had the paper work all sorted out. I got that done this morning and unloaded all the spare parts we had left over from the last one we did.

I haven't owned a bike with a back seat in some ten years or had anyone I WANTED to put back there.

I want this one to be close to stock with just a few upgrades and kinda classic. I rarely see these on the road and most of the time it's some ratty ass street fighter thing.
I have two strange custom bikes and it will be nice to have something half way comfortable that I can pack a bunch of gear on and take a trip.

So here we go.....

The bad side.

The better side

Guy had a long dirt drive way. Nasty but it'll all clean up.

tank has just one little ding, but the clear is flaking off on top.

Left overs. I'll be reworking the 95 forks and getting them on.

This stuff has been setting for quite a few years. Some of it come out from under my buddy's house. Some of it is new OEM hard to find parts.
It all looks like crap but it's just dirty/dusty and some just down right junk.
Never throw anything away till ya know for sure if you can't use something or just part of something.

I'll be putting up a post for parts wanted, but I'm just about out of cash. I do have stuff to trade? Just in case anyone has something kicking around I might be able to use. If I keep the stock paint scheme (not my favorite color combo but..) I'll need OEM upper and right side mid. The rest I can work with.

Anyway, I'm very excited to get started. It'll be fun to go BACK to stock rather then take a pile of parts and start from the beginning like I did with the other two. Maybe I'll do some trick sh@# for my passenger comfort?
maybe a removable backrest and move the rear pegs to a better position? IDK.

I've been checking it out.

I'm doing my research. Learning more very day about the 900's. Being unemployed has it's advantages.

I just put a post in the classifieds section for parts. Hopefully I'll come up with something I can use. Better yet something I can trade for. Wifey not happy about the new project......".but..but..I got it for you so you can ride with me!!" Didn't help.

P.S. Just so I don't forget.
Thanks to all that may have something good/bad or whatever to say, I read em all.

Talking Getting started. Making a list and checking it twice
Well I finally dragged my butt out there and got started. I tried cleaning the top of the tank. I wanted to see if I could make it look a little better. The clear coat it flaking off. Looks better. I know in a very short time it'll look the same as before if I don't something to fix it. Maybe I'll prep just the top and respray the clear coat from the blue line up? I'm not looking for a show bike, just a 10 footer.

To this.
Only spent like 5 minutes cleaning it. Just checking the condition of the paint under the clear. Of course it still looks like Beetle Dung, but better.

I have two issues to get sorted before I can start tuning it. Find the reason why the fuel pump isn't working and get the light rust cleaned out of the tank. It has a little bit up on the center hump inside. It's only enough to discolor it in a few spots. Down in the very bottom there is enough to need some sort of good cleaning and removal. At least it's only the last 3/4" of tank. So just the very bottom.
Got the pump working and yes it's the relay, I think. Only one way to tell. Replace it. If I bye pass the relay, it works fine.
So on to the carbs. Took them all apart, cleaned and inspected. Every thing looks good except the bowls, yuk! Nasty nasty nasty. I've seen it before. Not that big of a deal. Luckily I have a rack of 1997 carbs for parts. I only use the bowls. I needed to get the jet/needle sizes as well. Not sure what stock is, but it's got 115's. The needles have been shimmed up with two shims. It also has a K&N filter, so thats good news.
The parts carbs had 120 mains so I left them out. Not a very big bump in size but they're free so what the hell.

So far so good, no big surprises. The radiator is a bit bent. It's been repaired and poorly. I'll have to locate one of those too.
Next I pulled the plugs, not too bad. A little carbon build up.
I'm very close to the valve cover so it's on to checking the valves. I keeping my fingers crossed it doesn't need an adjustment. Just trying to get a base line on this POS.

Careful what you say about that bike, some of us are touchy...

How many miles? Looks like the tanks clear-coat is coming off quite a bit there. I have been inside and out multiple times on these bikes and kept it together at one point with zip ties and hope. Would love to be more help than extra parts if I can xD

man I remember when that bike came out!!!!!!!!

I loved that color scheme.

Hey did the 93 have a 16" front rim? I believe one of the early years did.. and they eventually swapped to a 17? (the 16 was great for handling/racing but the 17 stabilized it a bit I think?)

Subscribing to your thread!

Yep, 16"er. They kept it till like 97 or 98 something like that.
Friend of mine (no longer a friend cuz he was an effin jerk) had one back when I had the RC30. It was a great bike.
I love my two stroke and my Rat bike, but it will be nice to have something comfortable ( by comparison to my other bikes, this is a Goldwing) and capable of two-up and touring.

the 16" carried through up until the 929 (2000) I converted my 98 to a 17", its too hard to get good 16" tires.

LOVED my '97! 2up on this bike is actually reasonably comfortable for a sportbike because the riding position is a bit more relaxed and the pillion seat is larger than newer bikes.

I personally wasn't a huge fan of the 16" front because it felt a bit twitchy from what I was used to, plus tire choices were difficult. I did find that the Metzler M3's were a good tire option for a 16" combo though - however I would have eventually converted the front from a 600F2 if I had kept it.

Love the color combo on that one, keep us updated!

OOPS Meant no offense young Master.
I dig the bike too. I really is a Bench Mark bike.
I've never ridden one. I know what a really light bike feels like and this one right in the middle of the other two I have.

I'm not fawned of it either. I did get a spare front wheel from my buddy with a bran spanking new tiers dated 2300 23 wk of 2000, crap!
I just check the date on the bike's front 22 wk of 2000, Gee whiz both are junk.
I'm just about completely out of cash so swapping wheels is just going to have to wait. Wish I still had my original NSR wheel.

My girl has only been on a bike two times with her X. Of course he scared her, so I'll need to get her up to speed on the do's and don't's. I'm sure she'll be fine. I've been looking for some gear like a girls helmet and jacket, gloves and get her some descent boots. For her, it's style she's concerned about.
I know I know. I'm going to try and sneak some safety in without her noticing.

Oh man I had a 93 in the color scheme! Such a unique looking bike, I should not have let it go. Eh better than jail or dead, was not a good first bike.

I did have the the matching blue/red/white seats for it too. Sort of like this: http://second-look.com/store/product649.html

That seat looks pretty good.
I wouldn't think it would be a good first bike. I stared on a 88 Hurricane, Bark gray with the twin red stripes. I blinged it out before it was called "bling".
I think I paid 3k for it at what was Everett Honda, had 15k miles. Traded it back to em with over 30k two years later for the one RC30 they had. I got 3k trade in.

I never had any problem buying a front tire for mine. Motorcyclesuperstore always had a 16" Sportec M3 with a matching rear for real cheap the two times I bought tires. Good luck walking into any bike place without them telling you "We have to order it and it'll cost 400.00 before mounting, and that's just one tire' Both times I bought, I got a pair shipped for 180.00 lol....

Saw no reason to swap so I never did.

Also, I have a Corbin that's a little beat up on the underside but still solid that would fit that bike like a dream. Waiting on a bit of cash to buy my RC51 a new fancy seat and it will be up for sale. ( I have it saw on the RC cause it's too comfy regardless if it fits or not quite right haha! )

I assume you're talking about the front seat.
Maybe you could PM me with a price. Me Momma lives in Tacoma and so does George. I might be bale to have some one pick it up?

My seat has a hole in the top of it. Shabby.

Update on the CBR's yes two.
Ok so I picked up a parts bike. It had poorly painted body work but had all the stuff I was missing except front fender.
It had new tires, chain and sprockets, grips, tinted screen, nice black wheels, what looks like a new seat, a clean tank, pretty much everything, 90% complete 1994.
We stripped it down to nothing so I could use what I need and inventory the rest.
I've done a valve check, swapped the forks and front wheel. Had to use my rotors. Use the 94's switch gear only because it was a little cleaner. I put in 120 mains because I had them. I think I'll need to go bigger after I get it tuned. The parts bike had a perfect Rad and mine was crunched.
I started at 11 am and worked till about 5pm. Had lunch and a 1/2 hr nap. I was back at it at 6 ish till 3 am.
The carbs and air box are back on. oil in drained and the header is getting cleaned and painted. It's the effing cleaning that takes for EVER. That thing was kind of crusty, so just about very nut and bolt needs a good wire brush or Scotch-bright.
The 93 is actually fairly clean on the inside (motor, frame, carbs), it was the outside that got all the crap on it. It was the opposite for the parts bike. It was mostly clean on the outside and kinda nasty on the motor and all around the carbs/air box.
I have to spend some time with my sweetie tomorrow (I DO NOT WANT TO WAKE UP DEAD because of this bike if you know what I mean?).
I have my list of stuff to get at the Honda shop. And it's just more of the same. Clean, put it on, clean something else and put more of it back together.

Sorry for no pics. My camera is eating batteries so I need to get a new one. Hey!, that's something we can do tomorrow! My evil plan is coming together.

I didn't get a camera.
I did get ; the pipe painted( 1200* silver because that's what I had on the shelf), oil changed, swapped out the stater cover (parts bike had a spotless cover) , Cleaned the rear wheel and it's ready to be put on, Header is back in place, can is all cleaned up ( full D&D exhaust), I did lots of cleaning. I worked on it all night. Worked on getting all the surface rust of the pipe and paint earlier today. Took my little sweetie out for dinner and was back at it around 9 pm. I just came in at 5 am.

It doesn't look much different than any other CBR but it's a far cry from what I started with. The black wheels relay set it off.
I haven't figured out why the fuel pump isn't working. Might still be the relay. I tried the parts bike relay and still no good. Could be something further up stream. Until I get it sorted, I'll just remove it and run a gravity set up. I'm only short a fuel filter. I guess the later models without pump have one on the petcock. So I just need a low restriction filter and all should be ready to test and tune.

Wish I had some pics, cuz I know how you guys are. No pics it didn't happen.

More to come later.

Pics with this update.
Just came in from starting at whatever time A. Idle is over. That's when she went to bed. 10 pm I guess.
I was out earlier and finished the fuel system. I just ran from the tank to a see-through-filter to the carbs. The bowls are 2" below the bottom of the tank so I don't see what the problem is running pump-less?
Anyway. It started right up and ran like....well , like crap. Needs a full on carb tune including jets. Just waiting for the air/fuel screw tool. I have carb sticks so I can do all this by my lonesome.
I cleaned lots and put the back end, back on the end it was to be put on.....I'm on little sleep, so whatever.

Before>

After>

Before>

After>

Same thing..Before>

Then cleaned up. take a lot longer than you'd think.

This was just after getting to pipe back on. I don't think I had a pic of that nasty rusty crusty. Camera issues.

Parts list goes as such;
Master link.
4 exhaust O ring gaskets.
Oil and filter.
Fuel filter.
Stater gasket.
Gee whiz, I think that's it.
The rest I already had or came off the parts bike. It had lots of new stuff on it.
I wire brushed every nut and bolt. Cleaned all the parts before they went back on. If a nut/bolt was buggered up I would go through the pile and find something better. I wanted it to be clean rather than blinged out so I used more clean stock parts rather than some of the goofy crap that was on either bike. Paint will be a different story all together. I'm not sure what's going to happen there.

I'm not sure if anyone's fallowing this or not. Guess it doesn't matter? At least I can refer back to this thread if someone wanted to see what a POS I started with.
